The move to a remote, ultra-religious community in Canada goes about as smoothly as you’d expect. Emerson is 15, finds Delilah, and for a minute it’s pure summer wandering through pretty woods. Then a young girl turns up dead.

Authorities go with “probably a predator.” Emerson? She’s been followed too. By something that doesn’t care about your explanations or your church pamphlets. So the girls do the least responsible thing possible. They start embracing the darker side of themselves. Not in a wholesome way. In a “let’s fight the thing” way.

Writer-director Carly May Borgstrom brings the 1980s coming-of-age crime-and-chaos energy, but with a sharper, more supernatural female POV. Think small-town paranoia, big feelings, and horror that shows up when the conversation gets awkward.

Kaum zieht die Familie irgendwo in Kanada in so eine tiefreligiöse Abgeschiedenheit, ist die Idylle auch schon wieder weg. Emerson (15) schließt schnell mit Delilah Freundschaft. Man streift durch Wälder, alles riecht nach Sommer. Bis ein Mädchen tot gefunden wird. Die Erwachsenen reden von Raubtier. Emerson redet von Verfolgung. Spoiler: Das „Monster“ ist nicht nur im Wald. Und plötzlich stehen fünf Teenager-Freundinnen vor der ziemlich uncoole Frage, ob man Angst mit Mut überlebt oder mit… eigenen dunklen Kräften.

Regisseurin Carly May Borgstrom dreht das Ganze als weibliche Variante mit Horror-Drive. Kein Staunen, eher: „Okay, das wird jetzt eskalieren.“ Für Fans von Elevated Horror und diesem Stranger-Things-Gefühl, wenn sich das Licht flackert.
