CGTN Europe spoke to Liu Kuangyu, Research Fellow, Institute of Taiwan Studies China Academy of Social Sciences (CASS).
Transcript
00:00Liu Kuang-Yu is a research fellow at the Institute of Taiwan Studies under the China Academy of Social Sciences.
00:07At this time it is important because we know in a sense of cross relations.
00:13This is a time when cross relations remain tense.
00:17Also the global geopolitical landscapes grows increasingly complex.
00:22So Chairwoman Chengli Wen's upcoming, actually right now, the visit to the Chinese mainland carries weight far beyond a routine
00:31political exchange.
00:33I think it represents a moment of potential recalibration, which is subtle yet profound.
00:40This visit, I think, is a reopening of dialogue against the backdrop of current tense cross-street situation.
00:51And also communication across the street has been often marked by caution, mistrust.
00:58And also you can see that this has been demonized on the Taiwan island.
01:02So Chair's presence on the Chinese mainland suggests a willingness to re-engage with huge bravery.
01:08And dialogue, even at this earlier stage, we know that it's always the first step towards stability.
01:15Let's talk about the broader international landscape.
01:17I'm thinking particularly of Ukraine, Russia and the Middle East as well.
01:23And I wonder how much those external factors shape what's possible in this straight relationship.
01:34We see the Taiwan question is to China's internal affairs.
01:38So the future of cross-relations is ultimately determined by, as Chinese people, we don't need and we don't require,
01:47we don't desire external intervention in our domestic affairs and also our security, homeland security.
01:56So such unwarranted inference, they don't have any legal basis and will only further complicate the situation across the street.
02:05And also external forces may hype up tensions and support separate activities, but they cannot stop the historical trend of
02:17Chinese national reunification.
02:19We see the Chinese determination and capability, which is growing day by day to safeguard our sovereignty and territorial integrity,
02:27are still formidable and non-shakeable.
02:30And in fact, the major global powers, they welcome and encourage positive exchange between the two sides across the street.
02:39And we see the dialogues and peace in Taiwan streets, which is beneficial to the whole world.
02:44And the Chinese people on both sides have proven that we have this ability and willingness to achieve this.
02:52This is important provision of public good for the world.
