The 1980s in northern France. Clotaire grows up where trouble isn’t a visitor, it’s the landlord. Then he meets Jackie, fearless and annoyingly steady for someone surrounded by chaos. Their teen romance doesn’t start with a grand speech. It starts with two kids realizing they feel something real. And then the city remembers it runs on gangs, and love has to survive the fallout.

Clotaire takes a darker turn, links up with a criminal crew, and gets locked up for a crime he didn’t commit. That’s the kind of “justice” the film doesn’t soften. Years pass, they lose track of each other, and fate pulls them back together. But the real tension is not “will they reunite?” It’s whether their feelings are stronger than Clotaire’s very dangerous urge to get even.

Beating Hearts keeps it raw. Sometimes romantic. Sometimes brutal. Never especially subtle.

Er schnappt sich die falsche Richtung, wird für etwas verurteilt, das er nicht getan hat, und verschwindet. Jahre später treffen sie sich wieder. Frage: Liegt da noch Liebe, oder gewinnt irgendwann die Rache, die er sich so selbst angezüchtet hat? Beating Hearts ist bittersüßes Drama mit Kratzspuren.
