Anora plays like it wants to be a rom-com, then remembers it’s actually a wrecking ball with jokes. Anora, a confident stripper from Brooklyn, gets the one-life-chance feeling when she meets Ivan, the son of an oligarch. Then she goes full impulsive mode and marries him in Las Vegas. For a minute, it’s fairy-tale logic. And then the news reaches Russia, and Ivan’s parents fly to New York to get the marriage annulled. Suddenly the “better future” fantasy turns into chaos management, with everyone treating the rules like optional. It’s sharp, awkwardly funny in the best way, and weirdly satisfying. Also, yes, Vegas decisions come with consequences.

Anora ist diese Art Film, die so tut, als wäre sie romantische Comedy. Spoiler: Wird ziemlich schnell laut, chaotisch und auch ein bisschen böse. Anora, eine selbstbewusste Stripperin aus Brooklyn, hat kurz das Gefühl, das Schicksal hätte endlich verstanden, wie man ihr Leben „upgradet“: Sie lernt Ivan kennen und heiratet ihn spontan in Las Vegas. Klingt nach Märchen. Bis die Nachricht nach Russland sickert und Ivans Eltern nach New York kommen, um diese Ehe wieder einzusammeln. Plötzlich ist aus „Traum von besser“ eine ziemlich handfeste Schachpartie geworden. Unterm Strich: charmant, frech und unverschämt komisch, aber mit klarer Kante.
