“The Apprentice” isn’t really about building an empire. It’s about learning how to manufacture influence in 1970s and 1980s New York, one shady compromise at a time. A young millionaire heir wants power more than he wants actual good decisions, so he teams up with Roy Cohn. This is not a mentor in the wholesome sense. Roy Cohn, tied to Joseph McCarthy’s political world, has a talent for getting things done off the books. The movie has two modes: courtroom drama and backroom deal-making. One minute it’s about Trump’s racist rental politics. The next, it’s hustling with major corporations, unions, and even the Mafia to keep him rising in a brutal real estate market, despite a total lack of business instinct. True-story vibes. Rotten Tomatoes liked it. Metascore is more cautious. You’ll probably land somewhere in between.
