Michele De Lucchi still believes architecture can be a statement about the good in people. Then reality shows up with a stack of contracts for soulless, concrete cloud-scrapers. These buildings aren’t just ugly. They’re also a pretty loud environmental argument in the wrong direction. The lifespan? Roughly 40 years on average. So you get a high-rise that performs beautifully for a couple of decades and then quietly resigns to the pile. Director Viktor Kossakovsky turns that mess into something smarter than a guilt trip. Instead of speeches, he leans hard into what the world is actually made of. We follow the material cycle from stone in nature to what it becomes at the dump. It’s a cold, practical look at our habitat. Less “inspiring” and more “well, look at that.”

Michele De Lucchi ist Architekt, Idealist, und hat leider gerade den falschen Auftrag bekommen: Er soll Wolkenkratzer entwerfen, die aussehen, als hätte man Beton einfach nach Zahlen abgegossen. Das Ding ist nicht nur „nicht schön“. Es ist auch die Art von Architektur, die die Umwelt nicht als Mitbewohner behandelt, sondern als Problem. Und dann kommt die unschöne Wahrheit: Die Lebensdauer dieser Betontürme liegt im Schnitt bei rund 40 Jahren. Danach ist Ende, nur halt teurer. Der Dokumentarfilmer Viktor Kossakovsky macht daraus keinen moralischen Vortrag. Er zeigt Material im Übermaß, von Steinen, die in der Natur anfangen, bis sie auf der Müllhalde landen. Ja, das ist brutal konkret. Und irgendwie auch erstaunlich schön anzuschauen, wenn man sich schon mit der Zukunft angefreundet hat.
