Samia is the kind of underdog story that doesn’t need swelling music to be serious. Every morning, nine-year-old Samia races her best friend on the way to school. She always wins. So when the annual city race in Mogadishu comes up, there’s one clear goal. Show up. Run hard. Finish first.

Her dad supports her and even offers the bribe of real sneakers if she wins. Her mom does the opposite. For her, the problem isn’t “practice makes perfect.” It’s the rules. Women aren’t allowed to do sports, and the risk of running into a patrol isn’t theoretical. Still, Samia keeps training, quietly, at night.

At the city race, she pulls it off. She’s first, before all the adults. And then the movie turns the screw. If she can do this, maybe the next target is bigger than anyone wants to say out loud: becoming the fastest woman in Somalia for the Olympic Games.

Samia wirkt wie das seltene Biopic, das nicht so tut als wäre alles leicht. Jeden Morgen sprintet die Neunjährige auf dem Weg zur Schule mit ihrem besten Freund um die Wette. Sie gewinnt. Natürlich. Und dann steht der jährliche Stadtlauf von Mogadischu an. Der Vater pusht sie, sogar mit dem Versprechen echter Turnschuhe, wenn sie gewinnt. Die Mutter bremst. Nicht aus Spaß. Sport für Frauen ist verboten, und ganz nebenbei besteht die reale Gefahr, dass sie dabei Ärger mit einer Patrouille bekommt.

Also trainiert Samia nachts heimlich. Und beim Stadtlauf passiert das, was Erwachsene meistens hassen: Sie läuft einfach vor allen ins Ziel. Ab da kippt die Geschichte. Plötzlich klingt Olympia nicht mehr nach Märchen. Sondern nach Plan. Und nach einem ziemlich riskanten.
