Joseph and Sonya have a real, close friendship. And then there’s their little son, Pino, turning everything into a daily practice of love, mess, and improvising. Joseph is busy too. New film idea. Breakup fallout with his ex-friend Marc. So far, pretty standard “creative man is stressed” stuff.

Except Sonya’s depression starts pulling her out of her own life. The story doesn’t treat it like a mood board. It gets serious fast, and the plot follows them into a clinic, where Joseph has to juggle family life with his ambition to make something meaningful.

“Sad Jokes” (by Fabian Stumm, in his second feature) is absurd and heartfelt at the same time. Like real life, but with better timing and fewer clean exits.

Joseph und Sonya sind ein Team. Dazu gehört auch der kleine Pino, der zwischen Windeln, Alltag und großen Gefühlen hin und her flitzt. Während Joseph an einer neuen Filmidee rumknobelt und sich gleichzeitig von seinem Ex-Freund Marc abarbeitet, kippt Sonya immer weiter in eine Depression. Und plötzlich ist „funktionieren“ keine Option mehr, sondern ein Kampf.

„Sad Jokes“ ist genau da am besten, wo es unbequem wird: tragisch, aber nicht geschniegelt. Der Ton springt zwischen absurd-banalen Momenten und etwas, das wirklich weh tut. Fabian Stumm mischt das so, wie das Leben halt ist. Ein zweiter Spielfilm, der nicht so tut, als gäbe es nur eine Stimmung pro Szene.
