Western Massachusetts, 1991. Lacy is 11 and spends the summer at home with her mother, Janet. On paper, that sounds like a cozy setup. In practice, it’s more like Janet runs the room with effortless charm, while Lacy starts living more and more inside her own head.

As the months go on, visitors filter into their orbit. They’re drawn in, welcomed, and somehow convinced this is where they belong. Janet keeps being that kind of magnetic, likable presence that makes people relax. Lacy, though, slowly shifts back. She watches more than she joins. Like she’s got front-row seats to a show everyone else is performing for.

And the movie’s best trick is also its most uncomfortable question. Does Lacy still feel what she’s supposed to feel? Or is this summer turning affection into something else entirely?

Not exactly a crowd-pleaser, but definitely a specific one.

1991, ländliches Western Massachusetts. Lacy ist elf und verbringt ihren Sommer zuhause. Nicht aus Einsamkeit, eher als Ausprobierfeld für ihre Fantasie. Ihre Mutter Janet wirkt dabei wie die freundliche Chefin im Hintergrund: warm, charmant, irgendwie immer im richtigen Moment präsent. Und dann kommen Besucher dazu. Drei Leute ziehen in Janets Orbit ein, alle werden von ihr angezogen, alle fühlen sich, als hätten sie ihren Platz gefunden.

Das Problem: Lacy zieht sich immer mehr in ihre eigene Welt zurück. Von dort aus beobachtet sie das Ganze wie ein Fan, der lieber zuschaut als mitspielt. Nur bleibt am Ende die Frage hängen, die das Bild nicht laut stellt. Liebt sie ihre Mutter noch so, wie sie es früher getan hat?

"Janet Planet" ist eher leise und schräg als laut und groß. Und genau deshalb trifft es.
