More than 70 people feared dead after migrant boat capsizes in the central Mediterranean

A boat carrying around 105 people capsized in the central Mediterranean Sea after departing from Libya on Saturday. Two bodies were recovered and at least 70 are missing, according to NGOs Mediterranea Saving Humans and Sea-Watch.

00:09The NGO Mediterranean Saving Humans posted on social media that the boat departed Libya
00:15on Saturday with around 105 people on board.
00:19Commercial ships recovered two bodies and rescued 32 people from the boat, with the rest still
00:26missing.
00:27They added that the incident happened in a search-and-rescue zone handled by Libyan authorities.
00:34The rescued migrants were taken to the Italian island of Lampedusa.
00:39The NGO described the accident as a consequence of policies by European governments that refused
00:45to open safe and legal pathways for migrants.
00:49At least 683 migrants have lost their lives or gone missing since the start of 2026, according
00:57to the UN's migration agency.
00:59Italian authorities have said that 6,175 arrived on Italian soil over the same period.
