“Treasure” wears its seriousness like a coat it didn’t quite choose. Shortly after the fall of the Iron Curtain, New York music journalist Ruth Rothwax heads to Poland with her father, Edek, to dig into her Jewish family’s legacy. The problem is Edek, a Holocaust survivor, isn’t here for deep dives into his childhood memories. He’s the “let’s not re-open that door” guy. Ruth is the “I need to understand why this hurts” guy. So their trip turns into a tug-of-war where Edek keeps derailing Ruth’s plans. The comedy is mostly accidental, because avoidance does not come with a user manual.
Over the course of this eventful week, old family secrets surface. Not in a neat, inspirational montage way, but in messy, human steps. And somehow, after all the friction, their relationship shifts from cracked to tender.
----------
Ruth dagegen will verstehen, was ihre Eltern geprägt hat.
