00:03Cuba released prisoners from its jails on Friday just hours after its government announced a
00:08sweeping amnesty, coinciding with the most intense pressure campaign applied by the United States
00:14in decades. More than 2,000 prisoners are slated to be released as part of the so-called
00:20sovereign and humanitarian gesture.
00:30We want to make sure that in the bad moments, it is the most united people.
00:35There are many prisoners, many prisoners, who are really bad people.
00:41There are many people who are also good people, who commit a failure and fall.
00:47And if they are beneficiaries of this, glory to God.
00:49Everybody is satisfactory, happy, with joy.
00:53That was an unexpected thing for the Red Club.
01:06The move by the Cuban government is the largest such amnesty in 10 years, and it will be
01:12seen as a concession on Cuba's part in ongoing talks with the U.S., which had said that it
01:17was monitoring whether those it deems to be political prisoners would be among the liberated.
01:22So I think Cuba's in need of two things, economic reforms and political reform.
01:27You cannot fix their economy if you don't change their system of government.
01:30But they're in a lot of trouble, there's no doubt about it.
01:33And, you know, we'll have more news on that fairly soon.
01:35We're working on that as well.
01:37The question of political prisoners has long been a major sticking point in negotiations
01:42between Washington and Havana.
01:44Cuba has repeatedly denied it holds political prisoners, stating that those jailed during
01:50anti-government protests are found guilty of crimes including public disorder, resisting
01:55arrest, robbery and vandalism.
