00:04Hi I'm Dan Grieve, head professional here at Woburn and we've got a beautiful wet
00:09summer's day here at Woburn and we are going to talk about the muddy lie which
00:14I know for a lot of you amateur golfers is a real difficult shot because it's
00:18so difficult to get that contact to get that ball first contact from these
00:22lies is really tough so it's really all about setup so if we get the setup right
00:25like all lies it becomes a lot easier so you'll see in some of the other videos
00:30we talk a lot about the bounce and how the bounce is really your friend and for
00:34almost all short game shots that's the case apart from this one really where it
00:38really becomes your foe so we need to make sure we're using more of the
00:41leading edge more of the sharp leading edge to make sure we can get that
00:44contact into the back of the ball when we start using too much to bounce off
00:48these lies the club just goes into the turf and the ball just goes the other two
00:52in front of you so like all short game shots it's critical that we get the setup
00:55right so if we if we look at this face on you'll see that the book the key here is
01:00the ball position so we need that ball position to be just back of center and
01:03let's make sure that the chest bone is a good couple of inches there in front of
01:07the ball because that really dictates the low point in the swing a lot of club
01:11golfers I see they get way behind it from these sort of lies so it brings a low
01:14point back and it's very easy to hit the ground first so the key there is ball
01:18position just back of center let's make sure the chest bones ahead and shoulders
01:23nice and level as well when you start tipping this right shoulder also makes
01:26the low point appear too far behind the ball so nice level shoulders get the
01:31chest bone in front to the ball and the key here is that leading edge getting into
01:35the back and really think about your finish when you have a long finish you
01:39tend to release more of the bounce when you have a short finish or curtailed finish
01:44a little bit more pace it just allows the hands to stay a little bit more ahead of
01:48the club head and get that ball first so let's see if we can play once a little a
01:52little bit like this
02:04a nice ball first contact it will go lower the ball will be fairly hot but
02:10that's a sacrifice for making sense of getting the quality that strike okay this
02:13is a really tough shot here okay but it is real life we do get it sometimes so
02:17really wet muddy lie to a tight pin so the pin there is only about four yards on
02:22now of course there's options here and really I probably would advise most of you
02:26to play a low shot there with maybe with an eight or nine I'm running into the bank
02:30trying to take some pace off the ball but you know sometimes maybe you can't do
02:34that it might be a bunker there for example so you've got to try and play the
02:37higher shot so one of the things you can do is get the club selection right I've got my
02:41high toe 60 degree low bounce lob wedge here and what I really like about this
02:46wedge is how it's really shaved down on the toe so the bounce really is measured
02:50in the middle of the sole and and the toe there it's shaved down so I can use
02:53that to my advantage here so I'm going to set up with the toe lower than the
02:58heel I'm going to face a little bit open but really put that toe down and
03:01address it slightly out the toe of the club as well I'm going to stand quite a bit
03:06weight to the left here so a good sort of 30 degrees open with my feet and I'm
03:10going to swing the toe across the ball and I can hit just before the before it
03:15and the toe will nip under it and hopefully hit it nice and high so let's
03:20give that a go so high hands toe down and we're going to work across the ball a
03:26nice high shot and hopefully up and down so really tough shot made easy by
03:32using the right club and the right technique
