Right Side vs Left Side
Transcript
00:00Have you always wondered why some countries drive on the right side of the road and some on the left?
00:05Our travels bring us all the way back to the Roman Empire.
00:07The ancient Romans built a massive network of roads, 50,000 miles of hardened roadways,
00:13used primarily for military purposes.
00:16Now, the Romans did have cars, obviously, but carts and chariots tended to stick to the left side of the
00:21road.
00:22That way, if an enemy were to approach while traveling, the driver had easier access to their weapon in their
00:28right hand.
00:29Now, let's fast forward to the 1700s.
00:32The Roman Empire was gone, but the British Empire reigned.
00:35And they said,
00:36When in London, do as the Romans do.
00:38Over the years, that driving style was then exported to their various territories,
00:43including Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and India.
00:46And those areas continue to drive on the left today.
00:49Meanwhile, in America, we were doing our own thing.
00:52Because, after all, I mean, hey.
00:54We're Americans!
00:55Always wondered.
