00:11Hello people!
00:15How are you?
00:20My name is Jose Andres.
00:23And I am a cook.
00:27I arrived in America with very little.
00:31And I came on a boat like millions and millions did before me for the last two or three centuries.
00:44I had a dream like so many in this country.
00:47A few dollars in my pocket and the belief that in this country anything was possible.
00:56I came searching for success.
01:01But America gave me a more powerful thing.
01:09America gave me the opportunity to belong.
01:13A chance to belong.
01:15That's why you are here today.
01:20I came to Washington 23 years ago and I would walk from a restaurant almost every week to the National
01:29Archives.
01:31Where as you know it's not far from here.
01:34And right there I was sitting in front of the documents written by our founding fathers.
01:42And I was marveled at three very amazing words.
01:49We the people!
01:51We the people!
01:54We the people!
01:56We the people!
01:57We the people!
02:09We the people!
02:12The people!
02:13Because before that 14th Amendment..
02:18Those words were only a promise halfway kept.
02:26The table was set but the table didn't have seats for everyone.
02:37The 14th Amendment became the bridge between we, the people, as poetry and we, the people, as reality.
02:48Not some people, not people that look in a certain way or come from a certain place.
02:58All the people! All the people! We, the people!
03:05In case somebody isn't clear and you want to hear, mid-right citizenship is not a loophole.
03:16It is a promise. A promise that if you are born here, you belong here.
03:23A promise that if you love America, America will always love you back.
03:34I know what it means to love this country.
03:38And these people right between us that they think they love the country and they don't understand what love is.
03:46We love Trump! We love Trump! We love Trump!
03:50Because I know what it is to choose this country.
03:55I remember with my wife next to me raising my hand.
03:59We love Trump! We love Trump! We love Trump! We love Trump!
04:03And I felt something very simple but also powerful.
04:07We love Trump! We love Trump! We love Trump! We love Trump!
04:08To become American from coming from being an immigrant had also responsibility.
04:15Responsibility. Responsibility to give back. Responsibility to contribute. Responsibility like what you guys are doing to speak up for those
04:28still searching for the place to belong.
04:33But responsibility, my friends, is not something like love passive. Responsibility is something that we must do every day.
04:47Like showing up today to save everybody belong. Under responsibility with our actions. With our choices.
05:03Believing that we need to defend our beliefs. The belief that justice is not selective. That equality is not negotiable.
05:15That dignity is not divisible. These attacks on our values. Our freedoms. Our constitution.
05:28They may feel distanced to some people. But to me it's personal. My three daughters were born in D.C.
05:40Before my wife and I we became citizens. So let me tell you something. My three daughters are as American
05:48as anybody.
05:50And no one will ever take that from them. But let me tell you what the American dream means in
06:02the 21st century.
06:04The American dream means in the 21st century means that all of us. We need to make sure that we
06:14work hard to make sure that everyone has the same rights as my daughters did.
06:19The same opportunities that we want for our own children. When we take that promise away from children. Children who
06:33have done nothing but be born into this amazing country.
06:39We are not only trying. We are not only trying to change the law. Some people are trying to decide
06:47who counts.
06:49And when we decide who counts. We began to silence the voices that we need to be giving voice. Before
07:01they even have a chance to be heard.
07:04America cannot be heard. America cannot be and will never be the place where some voices matter more than others.
07:12If we the people means anything. It must mean all voices must be heard.
07:24America cannot be heard. Not only the voices we agree with, ma'am. All the voices.
07:34And let me tell you something. I am a cook and I know. There is not America without immigrants.
07:45There is no food in our table without immigrants. There is no farm without immigrants. There are no kitchens without
07:57immigrants.
08:01The people who plant seeds. The people that harvest the goodness of the earth. The people that cook surf.
08:11They are the hands that feed the nation. And they are not the strangers. They are not outsiders. They are
08:21us. We the people.
08:23We the people who plant seeds. Let's call.
08:26I'm going to be ending. But let me tell you. Immigration is not a problem for America to solve. Immigration
08:36is an opportunity for America to cease.
08:42an opportunity to build a country that this is stronger not that despite our diversity
08:51but because our diversity and this is what i have always believed that we must be longer tables
09:01no higher laws tables where everybody's invited tables where everyone has a seat
09:08today that table is being tested and the question my friends is very simple
09:22do we make that table smaller oh we made that table bigger
09:34i know my answer and sometimes to get to answer you don't need to scream louder
09:45because if you scream with hate that voice will get nowhere
09:53if you speak low and with love everybody will join join us
10:04i've seen the power of building bridges
10:08of whispering with hope with whispering with love what we know is true about america
10:17we are in this moment that we need to see the people know where they come from
10:24but for what everyone in america can contribute to make america a better place
10:33when we do that people we don't become weaker we become the best version of ourselves
10:46this is a fight to make sure we put the demons of hate away and we bring the best angels
10:53that we
10:53all have in us we all have that courage inside to make it happen so my friends today is not
11:03about
11:03defending a constitutional right today is about defending the pure idea of what america is and will be
11:18the idea that people have given their blood on the battlefield and the sweat in the farms to defend
11:26the idea of freedom and that everybody belongs an america where we the people means all of us an america
11:36where the promise we were given is a promise we choose to keep because if we start deciding who
11:45belongs we start undoing everything that america made possible until those three words we the people
11:58will no longer be an aspiration but we the people will become the truth of the land
12:06with the people with the people with the people with the people i love jose and reese a million dollars
