The BBC has announced it is to air a factual drama based on the story of Sarah Everard’s abduction and murder.

00:03The BBC says its drama production team are in contact with Sarah Everett's family
00:09and that the production will be handled with sensitivity and respect.
00:15Jeff Pope, the writer and executive producer, said Wayne Cousins should never have been a police officer,
00:22but opportunities to deny him that privilege were missed.
00:25The currently untitled series will air on BBC One and on iPlayer
00:30and will look at how Cousins was able to become a Metropolitan Police officer,
00:35as well as how his offending was dismissed and evidence against him was not collected.
00:42Lindsay Salt, the director of BBC Drama, said drama has a unique ability to sensitively tackle real-life subjects.
00:52She added that award-winning writer Jeff Pope will treat this with the utmost care,
00:59helping to ensure that the issues that led to Sarah Everett's murder
01:04remain in the public consciousness for years to come,
01:08while continuing to hold the police to account.
01:11The drama will be split into two hour-long parts,
01:16produced by Etta Pictures with a release date yet to be announced.
