Shipping traffic through the Panama Canal has surged as the Iran conflict disrupts the Strait of Hormuz.
Transcript
00:00The Panama Canal records a rise in ship traffic as the eruptions persist along the Strait of Hormuz.
00:06Stronger demand for U.S. liquefied natural gas and liquefied petroleum gas in Asian markets
00:11drive the increase as shippers avoid routes through the Middle East.
00:18The canal had projected about 34 daily transits this year,
00:22but traffic has recently increased to between 38 to 40 ships per day over the past two weeks.
00:28Around 5% of global maritime trade passes through the canal,
00:32with major users including the U.S. and China relying heavily on the route.
00:37The canal, a vital link for global energy shipments,
00:41mainly connects the eastern U.S. with key Asian markets, including China, South Korea and Japan.
00:47The canal's Deputy Administrator, Ilya Espino de Marota, said the canal provides a safe and shorter route,
00:54while remaining cost-effective despite rising fuel prices.
00:58However, she warned that handling around 40 ships per day is not sustainable over the long term
01:04due to capacitor limits along the canal.
01:07So I know that you can see this parallel.
01:07So, the first thing I'll check out the pluton has a great idea.
01:07So, I'll check out the teu best now.
