Earth’s ice is melting faster than ever—and the consequences could reshape the planet.
From the rapidly warming Arctic to the massive ice sheets of Antarctica and Greenland, scientists are tracking an alarming acceleration in global ice loss.
Nearly 99% of Earth’s land ice is stored in these polar regions, while the rest exists in mountain glaciers across regions like Alaska and Patagonia.
Between 1976 and 2024, glaciers alone lost over 9 trillion tonnes of ice. Meanwhile, Greenland and Antarctica together lost 7.5 trillion tonnes in just a few decades.
- If all Antarctic ice melted, sea levels could rise by 58 metres
- Greenland alone could add 7 metres
- Even now, sea levels have already risen about 20 cm
The situation is worsening as the planet heats up. The last three years have been the hottest on record, and phenomena like El Niño could push temperatures even higher.
The loss of sea ice is also disrupting ecosystems—threatening species like polar bear and emperor penguin—while accelerating warming as darker oceans absorb more heat.
