We are the keepers of Star Trek's Legacy as fans - so what do we need to see?

00:00If you've paid any attention to Star Trek over the last year, you will know that there
00:04has been a growing and growingly loud call for a Star Trek Legacy series to be greenlit
00:11in the aftermath of Star Trek Picard's third season.
00:14Now, the best thing that we can do is hope and wait and come up with storylines that
00:20absolutely need an answer.
00:22With that in mind, I'm Sean Ferry for Trek Culture and here are 10 story arcs Star Trek
00:26Legacy should continue.
00:28Number 10, Species 8472.
00:32Species 8472 have only been seen on screen in Star Trek Voyager at this point, though they
00:36have been an extensive storyline in Star Trek Online.
00:40There they would be renamed the Undine and a war would break out between them and the Federation.
00:45Apparently the events of In the Flesh didn't have the positive outcome one might have hoped
00:49for.
00:50Translating this to Star Trek Legacy with Seven of Nine commanding the Enterprise G, this
00:54seems like a perfect storyline to pick up, especially when one remembers that Seven and
01:23this tri-petal species rendered in 4K would be a sight to behold.
01:26Number 9, New Cardassia.
01:29The close of the Dominion War came with the Revolt of the Cardassian People, who switched
01:33sides and joined the Federation Alliance.
01:36Damar's Resistance managed to storm Dominion Headquarters, though he himself was killed in
01:40the attack.
01:41The stories that have arisen in the years since vary in terms of who exactly is in charge,
01:46but for the purpose of this article, we would like to pick up on Garrick taking control of
01:50the new Cardassian Union.
01:52Our selfish reasons for desiring Adriel Robinson to return to Trek aside, Garrick's control
01:56of their government could actually serve as a controversial move.
02:00Garrick may have sided with the Angels against the Dominion, though one must never assume that
02:05he is a good man.
02:06He's principled, but his drive to return home was fuelled by his hatred of Dukat and the Dominion,
02:11him, as opposed to remodelling Cardassia to fit the Starfleet ideal of democracy.
02:16Star Trek Discovery has revealed that at some point in history, Cardassia does indeed join
02:20the Federation, yet there are almost 800 years to explore between those points.
02:26The Cardassian Union has been responsible for some dreadful atrocities in the galaxy, so
02:30how then would their renewal and return be perceived by such powers as the Bajorans at Klingons?
02:36Number 8, Klingon Expansion.
02:38From Star Trek's earliest days, the Klingons have been bound together in an empire.
02:43This is an often overlooked fact, particularly since peace treaties have been signed between
02:48them and Starfleet.
02:49The greatest period of cooperation occurred in Deep Space Nine when they joined the war
02:53against the Dominion, yet in the year before this, they began an assault on both Cardassia
02:58and Starfleet, engaging both in a brutal campaign of conquest.
03:02As Commander Worf noted, there had been many warriors in the Empire who claimed they had been
03:07a peace for too long.
03:08The destruction of the Romulan homeworld and destabilisation of their Empire would seem
03:12to offer a ripe opportunity for expansion again.
03:16After all, despite periods of peace between both powers, the Klingons and the Romulans were
03:20old foes.
03:21One could hardly be surprised if the Empire adapted that old saying, Romulus' difficulty
03:26is Kronos' opportunity.
03:27Is this something that Starfleet could stand by and do nothing about?
03:31Technically, they have no jurisdiction over the Beta Quadrant.
03:34However, even with Chancellor Martok at the head of the Empire, the idea of the Empire stands
03:40in opposition to the Federation's ideals.
03:43Disappointing as it may be for the history of Star Trek, this may prove to be one of the
03:48pivotal storylines in the history of the franchise.
03:51Number 7.
03:52The Gamma Quadrant.
03:53The introduction of the Bajoran wormhole in Deep Space Nine saw audiences transported
03:57across the galaxy to the Gamma Quadrant.
04:00While the first couple of seasons of the show saw some exploration, the rapid rise of the
04:04Dominion effectively put paid to much further discovery out there.
04:08However, with the treaty put in place in What You Leave Behind, and the Rogue Changelings
04:12being dealt with in Star Trek Picard, there is a huge opportunity for new stories and discoveries
04:17on the far side of the Celestial Temple.
04:19More on that later.
04:20While the Dominion arc is effectively wrapped up nicely, that leaves an entire quadrant to
04:26be explored.
04:27The developments of Star Trek Prodigy, particularly in the field of warp drive and propulsion,
04:31also offer a means to explore the Gamma Quadrant without having to rely on the wormhole.
04:36If one wanted to give Dominion space a wide berth, one could simply start with the border
04:41between the Alpha and Gamma Quadrants, working out from there.
04:46Number 6, Schisms.
04:48Arguably one of the most frightening episodes of Star Trek The Next Generation, Schisms introduced
04:53this nightmare species of aliens from another dimension.
04:56The original episode created a drawn out feeling of unease and dread, coupled with the very real
05:01fear of those things that go bump in the night.
05:03The conclusion of that first story saw a probe escaping from their realm, vanishing out into
05:09our universe.
05:09To date, this has yet to be mentioned in canon.
05:13The nature of their dimension hopping travel means that these aliens could become the buggy
05:17man of the Milky Way galaxy, posing as demons for countless species.
05:21This would also serve as an excuse to bring characters like Riker, Worf, LaForge and Kaminer
05:26back for guest roles, as few who saw Schisms could forget that scene on the holodeck.
05:31If ever there was something to set your teeth on edge, it's the clicks in the dark.
05:35Want to terrify an entire new generation of Trekkies?
05:37Schisms and a follow up are the way to go.
05:40Number 5, Thomas Riker.
05:43Thomas Riker was created after a transporter malfunction saw this clone of William T. Riker
05:48stranded on Nervala 4.
05:50There he remained for 8 years until he was discovered by the Enterprise D. He struggled
05:54upon his return to Starfleet, overshadowed by the career of his brother.
05:58This saw Thomas decide to abandon Starfleet and join the Maquis.
06:01He used his unique position to trick Major Kira into giving him access to the USS Defiant,
06:07eventually leading to his capture and imprisonment by the Cardassians.
06:11For most people, that would have been a death sentence.
06:13Not so for Tom.
06:15Star Trek Lower Decks revealed in their episode The Inner Fight that Thomas was, in fact, still
06:20alive and was being sought out by Starfleet.
06:23The reveal that he is still alive begs many questions.
06:25How did he survive his internment in the Laison 2 labor camp?
06:28Why was he not executed when the Dominion destroyed the Maquis?
06:32Did he then escape or was he released?
06:34Quite frankly, what has he been up to in all of this time?
06:36How might he feel upon the discovery that Will Riker and Deanna Troi had rekindled their
06:41relationship, marrying and having two children?
06:44Might this be one step too much for him to handle, seeing a life that he could never have
06:48had?
06:49Number 4, Captain Sisko.
06:51This is the dream, isn't it?
06:53Somewhere outside of time itself, Captain Ben Sisko is with the Prophets in the Celestial
06:57Temple.
06:58As the years go by, his promise to Cassidy is getting a little harder to believe.
07:02Also considering he is outside of time, the fact that he hasn't returned begs an answering
07:07arc.
07:09Avery Brooks has not appeared in Star Trek since What You Leave Behind, though he has voiced
07:13the character in Star Trek Online.
07:15However, it does feel like the time for Sisko to return is more relevant than ever.
07:20The resurgence of Deep Space Nine in recent years, thanks largely to its availability
07:24on streaming services, has helped the show's popularity grow.
07:28Star Trek Picard has already addressed some of the threads left from its final season,
07:32but Sisko's fate still eludes us.
07:35What We Left Behind, the documentary celebrating Deep Space Nine, saw a potential for bringing
07:39the character back in a purported 8th season, which also introduced Sisko's second son,
07:45Joseph.
07:45The simple fact is that this story is unfinished, and we as Trekkies are nothing if not insatiable.
07:52For this one, we'd take a full season arc on Star Trek Legacy, or even a long Trek.
07:56Just bring Sisko home.
07:59Number 3.
08:00Ongoing Relations in the Delta Quadrant.
08:03Star Trek Prodigy has revealed that between Protostar Drives and General Propulsion Advancement,
08:08travel between the Alpha and Delta Quadrants is no longer a lifetime commitment.
08:12With the number of first contacts that Captain Janeway and the crew of USS Voyager were responsible
08:18for, revisiting the Delta Quadrant seems like a no-brainer.
08:21The destruction of the Borg Collective also ensures a huge vacuum now exists in what was
08:25formerly their territory.
08:26What does the landscape of the Delta Quadrant now resemble, and what other powers have flourished
08:31without the Borg holding them back?
08:33If nothing else, it would be worth a visit to the Ocampa homeworld.
08:37Quite frankly, we want to see them as one of the great powers in the galaxy.
08:40It would certainly help further justify Janeway's decision to destroy the Caretaker's Array.
08:45What if the Talaxians, the Brunari, the Krenim...
08:48The nature of Star Trek Voyager didn't really allow for much revisiting storylines, as the
08:53ship moved closer and closer towards home.
08:56The impact of Voyager's journey was already shown to have some notoriety in the original
09:00show, so a Federation presence in the Quadrant would certainly seem justified.
09:05If ever there was a call for a second contact, it would seem more timely than ever.
09:11The Temporal Cold War, by its very nature, is the storyline that could bring all of existing
09:18Star Trek together in a crossover event.
09:21This is another idea that we have touted before, though with Star Trek Discovery bringing it
09:25into their future history, it seems, more, forgive the pun, timely.
09:31Star Trek Enterprise had ideas for the fifth season that never was, one of which included
09:35revealing Jonathan Archer as the future guy who was working with the Sulaban.
09:39The Guardian of Forever has to hide itself away from the galaxy to avoid being abused
09:44for the war.
09:45Discovery's arrival in the future was a crime against the laws decided after the wars.
09:49All of these are plot threads begging for exploration.
09:52In a show named Star Trek Legacy, the fallout of one of Starfleet's greatest captains operating
09:58as someone manipulating time could have serious long-term repercussions for history.
10:03Add this to Kirk's body in Daystrom Station, and another entry on this list, the Temporal Cold
10:08War could serve as a way to create one of the biggest events in Star Trek's history, finally
10:14uniting the captains on screen for the first time.
10:18Number 1.
10:19Where the hell is Selah?
10:21If there's one thing that we here at Trek Culture are in danger of becoming is that we
10:25may get slightly repetitive.
10:28But we don't care.
10:28Where the hell is Selah?
10:29To be fair, Star Trek Picard's third season was a busy one, so cramming her in may not
10:33have done the character justice.
10:34The first season, however, would have seemed the perfect time to bring her back.
10:38The Romulan Empire, having suffered a cataclysmic event with a supernova, needed someone to
10:43unify it.
10:44Who better than Selah?
10:45Even if she perhaps doesn't have the Quadrant's best interests at heart?
10:49She is one of, if not the, biggest dangling thread from Star Trek The Next Generation.
10:55She was working with Praetor Neral, who would return in Inter Arma Enum Silent Legas, Sans
11:01Selah, though he was replaced before the unlucky Praetor Hiron was on the receiving end of Shinzon's
11:08Thaleron Generator in Star Trek Nemesis.
11:10With that power vacuum and the chaotic nature of the Empire in the years that followed, the
11:15return and rise of this brilliant tactician would seem ripe for the exploring.
