The story unfolds during a period of intense religious and political conflict in France. At a ball celebrating Henry of Navarre's wedding on August 23, 1572, the manipulative Queen Mother Catherine de' Medici (Josephine Crowell) instigates King Charles IX to issue a decree for the extermination of the Huguenots. Amidst this tension, the Comte de la Roche (Courtenay Foote) makes advances towards Margot de Vaincoire (Betty Francisco), who is betrothed to Rupert de Vrieac (Conway Tearle).

The de la Roches and de Vrieacs are long-standing enemies. Rupert challenges the Comte to a duel, winning but deliberately sparing his opponent's life, thereby placing the Comte in his debt. Both Rupert and Margot are Huguenots, while the Comte is a Catholic aligned with the Queen Mother's faction. The Comte later saves Rupert's life from the ongoing persecution, but only by forcing him into servitude in his castle.

While enslaved at the castle, Rupert falls in love with the Comte's sister, Yolande (Norma Talmadge). Yolande initially treats Rupert coldly, but her perception changes when the vile Duc de Tours (Wallace Beery) attempts to force himself upon her, threatening to torture Rupert.
