00:58Hey, Bert, Bert, come in here quick.
00:59Yeah, Aaron?
01:00Hey, Bert, look out there.
01:01There's millions of people out there watching us on TV.
01:03Right, right.
01:04Hi there.
01:04Yeah, but we're not supposed to be on TV till next week.
01:07How come we're on today?
01:08Oh, I thought you knew, Ernie.
01:09You see, the Xerox people put us on TV today so we could give everybody a kind of a preview
01:14of Sesame Street before it goes on the air.
01:17Xerox, huh?
01:18Yeah, right.
01:19Are they going to sponsor Sesame Street?
01:20No, no, no.
01:21You see, nobody's going to sponsor Sesame Street.
01:24It'll be on the educational stations all around the country.
01:27Oh, hey, way to go there, Xerox.
01:29Yeah.
01:30Now, come on.
01:30We've only got a half an hour to tell everybody about Sesame Street.
01:34Okay, I'll tell you what.
01:34You start, Bert.
01:35Okay.
01:36Sesame Street is made for little kids, you know, preschoolers.
01:40Yeah, yeah, and it's going to be on the air every day for a whole hour, and in some places
01:44it's going to be on twice a day.
01:46Right.
01:46Twice a day, Bert.
01:47Twice.
01:47I got that.
01:48Right.
01:48Now, the idea is to make use of all the things kids like to watch on TV anyway, and use
01:54those things to teach.
01:56Hey, Bert, you know what things kids like to watch the most on TV?
01:58I sure do.
01:59What?
02:01Puppets.
02:01Oh, no, Bert.
02:03No, no, no.
02:04Cartoons?
02:05No, Bert.
02:07Dancing?

02:20Commercials?
02:21Commercials.
02:22Huh.
02:22Just like these.
02:25This weird story of Wanda the Witch is brought to you courtesy of the letter W.
02:33Wanda the Witch lived somewhere west of Washington.
02:38Around her waist, instead of a belt, she wore a worm.
02:44Wanda had a pet weasel.
02:46I'm a weasel.
02:48And on her head, a wiry wig.
02:51On Wednesday, in the middle of winter, Wanda walked to the well to get water to wash her wig.
03:00But the wheel on the well was worn, and Wanda grew weary.
03:06So she waved her wand, and her wash tub filled with warm water.
03:12But just as Wanda was about to drop her wig into the warm water, a wild wind whipped the wig
03:20from her hand and blew it away forever.
03:25Witch taught Wanda this lesson.
03:27Witches who wash their wigs on windy winter Wednesdays are wacky.
03:36This witch story was brought to you courtesy of the letter W.
03:40Wow, Wanda the Witch is weird.
03:46This is an X.
03:49Even upside down, it's still an X.
03:53Many words begin with X, such as, well, of course we...
03:58X begins...
04:02Did I show you when you...
04:04Yeah, I showed you that.
04:06All right.
04:08X is a very important letter.
04:11Many words end with X.
04:13Such as, uh, how you...
04:16Pardon me?
04:19Oh, yeah.
04:21Fox.
04:23Box.
04:27Fox.

05:15Under a tree.
05:17By the sea.
05:18She was looking for her Easter egg.
05:23Having a dream about eating ice cream in the land of steam.
05:30When a baby seal tickled her heel, she let out a squeal.
05:39And woke from her dream in time to see the eagle and me flying away with the Easter egg over
05:48the evening sea.
05:49She, she, she, she.

06:21Yeah, but now, instead of numbers, I want to talk about...
06:23Hey, why don't we show some of the number stuff, Bert?
06:24No, no, right now, I don't want to...
06:26I like those other things, you know.
06:26How about we show them number seven?
06:28No, no, no.
06:28That's my favorite number.
06:29Number seven, that's a good number, you know?
06:31We're going to show how milk comes from the farm.
06:33Maybe number two.
06:34Number two's a good number, too.
06:35Number two used to be my favorite, but then I liked three for a while.
06:39Three was a good number.
06:40Remember number three?
06:41But most of all, I think I like number seven.

12:13But there's lots more to Sesame Street than little cartoons and songs.
12:17You see, the main part of the show is a real place where people live.
12:21And we live there, too.
12:22You'll see.
12:23Yeah, hey, hey, Bert.
12:24I'll tell you what.
12:24Why don't we show everybody a little bit of the very first show, you know, where we introduce
12:28all the people who live on Sesame Street?
12:30You know, Gordon and Bob and Mr. Hooper and Susan and Big Bird and the rest.
12:34Okay, okay.
12:35These are the people you'll be seeing every day.

14:15She's only four feet tall.
14:17I'm holding her up, Big Bird.
14:19You are?
14:20Yeah.
14:22Come on, Big Bird.
14:23It's just a little...
14:24It's a nice little girl.
14:25I want you to meet her.
14:26Oh, thank heaven.
14:28She's not really eight feet tall.
14:30No, she's not.
14:31Oh, that's good.
14:31I'm a very nervous bird.
14:34Boy, I nearly laid an egg right here on Sesame Street.
14:38What do you think of Big Bird, Sally?
14:41If we did that, the world would be very large.
14:44It would have, yeah.
14:46Hey, you hear that singing?
14:47Come here.
14:49That's Ernie.
14:50Ernie lives down in the basement.
14:52And he lives there with his friend, Bert.
14:57Hey, come on, Ernie.
14:58Dinner's ready.
14:59Okay, Bert.

15:00Right after I have a couple of these cookies.
15:02Hey, hey.
15:02No, you ding-a-ling.
15:04No, you don't eat cookies before dinner.
15:06You eat them after dinner.
15:07It might spoil your appetite.
15:08Right, Bert.
15:09Okay.
15:10I'll be right along.
15:10Right after I have a couple of these cookies.
15:12Good.
15:12Hey, hey.
15:12No, no.
15:13Wait a minute now.
15:14Hey, Ernie.
15:15Don't you know the difference between before and after?
15:19Oh, sure, Bert.
15:19Yeah, I just...
15:21Well, I'm not so sure.
15:23Yeah.
15:24Okay, well, now listen carefully, and I'll try and explain it to you, all right?
15:27Mm-hmm.
15:28Okay, now, uh...
15:29Now, you see, before you can have those cookies, you have to lift that cover.
15:34Uh-huh.
15:34Right.
15:35Now, after the cover is lifted, then you can have the cookies.
15:39Oh, right.
15:41Right.
15:41Now you understand?
15:43Well, let me see now.
15:45Make sure I understand it.
15:46Now, before I can have a cookie...
15:48Yeah?
15:49I have to lift the cover.
15:50Right.
15:50Now, after I lift the cover, then I can have a cookie, right?
15:54Right.
15:55Okay, now, let's go to dinner, okay?
15:56No, no, no, no.
15:57I'm not sure.
15:58I'm not sure that I got it absolutely straight.
16:00Ah.
16:00Now, see if I...
16:01See if this is right.
16:01Yeah.
16:02Now, before I can have a cookie...
16:03Yeah.
16:03...I have to lift the cover.
16:04Right.
16:05Now, then, after I lift the cover...
16:07Yeah.
16:07...then I can have a cookie.
16:09Okay, right.
16:09Now you know it, so let's go.
16:11One, one, one, one more time.
16:13One, one more time, just to make sure, absolutely certain I got it right.
16:15All right.
16:16All right.
16:16Now, before I can have a cookie, I have to lift the cover.
16:18Lift the cover.
16:19After the cover is lifted, then I can have the fourth cookie.
16:21Right.
16:21Okay, now you understand, so let's go and eat, all right?
16:25Eat?
16:26Yeah.
16:27Gee, Bert, I'm not hungry now.
16:28Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
16:31Yeah.
16:32You want a cookie, Bert?
16:35And there's Susan again.
16:36She's playing a singing game with her children.
16:39All right.
16:39Let's listen, Ernie.
16:40If you're happy and you know it, clap your hands.
16:45If you're happy and you know it, clap your hands.
16:49If you're happy and you know it, then your face is going to show it.
16:54If you're happy and you know it, clap your hands.
16:58But if you're sad and you know it, wipe your eyes.
17:05If you're sad and you know it, wipe your eyes.
17:12If you're sad and you know it, then your eyes are going to show it.
17:18My goodness, Sally's having a trauma.
17:20If you're sad and you know it, wipe your eyes.
17:26Oh, Sally, don't feel so bad.
17:28But if you're mad and you know it, stomp your feet.
17:33If you're mad and you know it, stomp your feet.
17:37Oh, you know, we're going to get in trouble making all this noise out here.
17:40We better move on to the next verse.
17:44If you're sleepy and you know it, close your eyes.
17:51If you're sleepy and you know it, close your eyes.
17:57If you're sleepy.
18:06Oh, if you're happy and you know it, clap your hands.
18:10If you're happy and you know it, clap your hands.
18:13If you're happy and you know it, then your face is going to show it.
18:17If you're happy and you know it, clap your hands.
18:20Clap faster, faster.
18:21Oh, thank you, ladies and gentlemen, for your kind of noise.
18:25Hey, and there's Buddy.
18:26Buddy and Jim are friends of ours, too.
18:28Ready to go.
18:30Let's go.
18:32Hey, Jim.
18:33What is it this time?
18:35Ooh.
18:37My shoes are attacking me.
18:39They hurt my feet.
18:42Wait a minute.
18:43There's something wrong here.
18:44Yeah, there's something real bad wrong with my shoes, Jim.
18:49Buddy.
18:49Huh?
18:50You've got your right foot where your left foot is supposed to be,
18:54and your left foot is where the right foot is supposed to be.
18:57That's why your feet hurt.
18:59Is that why my feet hurt?
19:00Of course that's the reason.
19:02Whoa.
19:02What are we going to do now, Jim?
19:04It's very simple.
19:05Simple?
19:05All you have to do is cross one leg over the other,
19:08and then your feet will be right.
19:10Really?
19:10Of course.
19:11Very simple.
19:13It's right over there,
19:14and now the shoes are where they're supposed to be.
19:18Well, you sure are smart, Jim.
19:20Let's go for our walk.
19:22All right.
19:22Ready now?
19:23Yep.
19:23Let's go.
19:23Let's go.
19:24Not too fast, though.
19:27And look, Ernie, there's Bob again.
19:30He's going to sing to us.
19:32Good morning, stars shine, so happy to see my love and me as we sing our early morning singing song.
19:50Glitty glop gloopy, nippy nappy noopy, lo, lo, lo, lo, lo.

21:10Uh, my name is Kermit
21:12And today I'm going to talk about the difference between more and less.
21:16Now you will notice that I have two glasses of milk here
21:19And that there is less milk in this glass than there is in that glass
21:24Which means there
21:25Hey
21:27Hey
21:28Hey, listen
21:29What are you going to do with that
21:30Mm, mm, mm, mm, mm, mm, mm, mm, mm, mm, mm
21:43Let's do it this way, then.
21:45You will notice now that there is more milk in this glass than there is in that glass,
21:50which means that there is less milk in this glass over here than there is in this glass,
21:54because there is more in here and that there is in over here.
21:58And, uh, hey.
22:01Hey, look, you.
22:08Hey, now, listen, you.
22:10I've had enough of that.
22:12Now, I'm trying to talk about the difference between more and less, and you keep drinking the milk.
22:16Now, I'm going to explain it just one more time,
22:18and I want you to sit still and pay attention and don't interrupt me.
22:22Now, you got that straight?
22:23Now, not a peep out of you, Sonny, or I'm going to teach you a lesson that you'll, uh, uh,
22:30well, uh...
22:34Well, let's, let's think of it this way, uh, more and less.
22:39Uh, you will notice now that there are more monsters than frogs here, uh, which means that there are less
22:46frogs than monsters.
22:47Uh, which means that you're going to see more and more of them and less and less of me.
22:53Uh, peep!
22:56All in all, the idea is to sort of mix up all kinds of interesting things for little kids.
23:01You know, things that are fun.
23:02Yeah.
23:03But can help out, too, in learning letters and numbers and what words mean and things like that.
23:08Right.
23:08Yeah.
23:08And there's a program guide every month for mothers and fathers and teachers.
23:12Mm-hmm.
23:12Hey, hey, Ernie, show them the guide.
23:14It's a great guide.
23:15Okay, there's a program guide.
23:15And then we've got to go, though.
23:16Okay, here's a program guide, you see, and this tells what's going to happen on Sesame Street every day.
23:21You know, uh, see, look at that.
23:22Look at that.
23:23See, there's cartoons in here.
23:24Yeah.
23:24There's games and there's people and there's, there's music and, uh...
23:28Oh, wait a minute, Bert.
23:28Wait a minute.
23:29They haven't met the Anything Muppets.
23:31You know, they can turn into anything they want to be.
23:33Oh, yeah, but...
23:33They haven't met, they haven't met Oscar.
23:35These are grouts that live in the trash can.
23:36We're out of time, Ernie.
23:38Sorry.
23:42He's about where milk comes from or where the garbage goes.
23:45You know, about where the garbage goes.
23:46But, Ernie...
23:46How the farm kids live and...
23:48Ernie, Ernie, we're out of time.
23:50You see, they'll just have to see all that when Sesame Street goes on the air next week.
23:54Yeah, but, but, but, but, but wait a minute, Bert.
23:55Can't we just show one more little film?
23:57Just one, one more little film like this one here?
24:00A.
24:02Ape.
24:08Tiptoe through the tulips.
24:11Ape.
24:13Hey.
24:15Hey, but, but, Bert, we need a little bit more time to just show some more stuff, you know?
24:18Ernie, Ernie, old buddy, there just is no more time.
24:21Oh, but, but just one more.
24:23One more thing.
24:23Now, now, you gotta look at this one here.
24:25Just, just take a look.
24:26No, no, why are they showing that?
24:27No, no, no.
24:28We, we wanna show some more of the stuff from Sesame Street.
24:30No, we don't, we don't care about the executive producer or anything like that.
24:34Now, come on, Bert.
24:35Can't we show some more of the, the stuff from the show?
24:37Look, they can see it all next week, Ernie.
24:39Come on now.
24:39Now, who cares who wrote this thing?
24:41No, let's, let's just, you know, say, oh, look, they left out Danny's credit there.
24:44Yeah, Danny was there.
24:45Hey, come on.
24:45Hey, Xerox, how about putting us on for an extra half an hour, huh?
24:48Do you think we could, because we could, no, huh?
24:50Well, how about, then just watch next week.
24:52What time are we on, Bert?
24:53Look, in different times and different places.
24:55Now, come on.
24:55Yeah, well, look in the newspaper, then.
24:57And the show's on a whole hour long, and lots of places will be on twice a day.
25:01Lighting, we don't care about the director of operations and the production assistant.
25:04Can we go ahead?
25:06Oh, come on, now.
25:07Bert, we've got to show a lot more stuff from the show.
25:09Look, you've got to have credit, Ernie.
25:10It's a rule.
25:11Oh, but the lighting director and the videotape editor, they don't care.
25:14Well, their mothers care.
25:15Well, how about the program guide?
25:16Now, look, we've got to write about getting the program guide.
25:19Yeah, yeah.
25:20Well, the first issue is free, you know.
25:21And all you have to do is write to this address.
25:23Now, see, Parent Teacher Guide, Box 9140X, St. Paul, Minnesota, 55177.
25:30You got that?
25:32Now, anybody can write for it.
25:33You teachers, would you indicate your school, please?
25:35Right.
25:36But for the kids, there's a big poster in the program guide.
25:39You've got to go, Ernie.
25:41For your free copy of the program guide, write Parent Teacher Guide, Box 9140X, St. Paul, Minnesota, 55177.
25:53Dr. James E. Allen, Jr., United States Commissioner of Education.
25:58I'm told that television networks never preview programs scheduled by other networks.
26:05But NBC, with the help of Xerox, has done just that.
26:10And both deserve commendation for this advanced glimpse of Sesame Street,
26:15the new daily series for children,
26:17which will be seen on more than 170 educational television stations
26:23from Maine to American Samoa.
26:28Sesame Street represents both an historic step forward by the medium of TV
26:32and an equally significant innovation in mass education.
26:37In plain words, there never has been before a nationwide TV program designed especially
26:46to help prepare young children for school.
26:50Next week, there will be.
26:53Early childhood experts now know that young children develop much of their intellectual capacity
26:59long before they enter school.
27:02And all of us have seen the power that television has to reach and teach children.
27:08In fact, some children watch as many hours of TV before they enter the first grade
27:15as they will spend in the classroom during the first five years of school.
27:21The Children's Television Workshop of National Educational Television
27:25was created to find out how effective the medium of TV could be
27:30in helping prepare preschoolers for school.
27:33The films you have just seen are a sample of the type of programming
27:38the workshop's Sesame Street series will offer
27:41in its attempt to provide an answer to that question.
27:47We at the United States Office of Education are proud to join with Project Head Start
27:52and several distinguished private foundations in making this experiment possible.
27:59And I hope you will help your child find this exciting new way to learning
28:05by tuning to your local educational station each day at Sesame Street time.
