An endangered sei whale found dead on New York City's Rockaway Beach is prompting a response from marine conservation teams.

The Atlantic Marine Conservation Society said it was notified that the whale, whose carcass was first seen floating offshore, had washed up on the beach on Thursday (March 26).

00:01An endangered say whale has been found dead on Rockaway Beach in New York City,
00:06prompting a response from marine conservation teams.
00:09The Atlantic Marine Conservation Society says it was alerted after the whale's carcass,
00:14first spotted floating offshore, washed up on the beach on Thursday.
00:19This animal is roughly about a 30-foot male say whale,
00:23and it's not very common that we see them here,
00:25but we know that there are species that are in the area.
00:27So, Atlantic Marine Conservation Society, Marine Mammal Center,
00:31New England Dolphin Conservation Society, and Marine Mammals of Maine
00:34are all coming together to be able to investigate the cause of the mortality for this animal.
00:39Officials say New York waters are home to a variety of marine mammals year-round,
00:43including several large whale species.
00:46Say whales are listed as endangered in the United States,
00:49with major threats including vessel strikes and entanglement in fishing gear.
00:57One of the Aaron and Governor departments have been taking bets.
