This announcement was made by Health Secretary Dr Faith Brebnor on Friday. More from Elizabeth Williams.
Transcript
00:00The Tobago House of Assembly and the Tobago Regional Health Authority has not gotten any word of a shift in
00:06policy as it relates to the use or the employment or the utilization of the technical capacity of Cuban medical
00:15professionals.
00:16And therefore, we will continue functioning as we've been functioning over the last couple of years.
00:23Dr. Brevner said if the national policy changes, then the THA would act.
00:27Unless a national policy is highlighted and presented to the Tobago House of Assembly or the Tobago Regional Health Authority,
00:35it's also important to note that the Tobago Regional Health Authority routinely recruits health professionals from all over the world.
00:45Her comments come amid mounting international pressure as the United States has called on Caribbean nations to sever ties with
00:53Cuba's medical brigades, labeling the program as forced labor and human trafficking.
01:00She said the facts must be made clear in the matter.
01:04They simply need to be able to legally work in Trinidad and Tobago once they are recruited.
01:12And we will continue doing that.
01:15And that, of course, includes medical professionals from Cuba.
01:19As long as they are legally allowed to be employed in Trinidad and Tobago, the Tobago Regional Health Authority will
01:26continue recruiting as we go along.
