00:04good morning everyone as we are gathering as foreign ministers today at a time of huge global
00:12instability and insecurity we will of course be discussing the conflict in the Middle East
00:20where we want to see a swift resolution that reaches regional stability and security
00:28and opens the Strait of Hormuz at a time when 130 countries have come together at the United Nations
00:36to condemn Iran's egregious aggression towards the Gulf states and also its attacks on international
00:45shipping and that is so important because Iran cannot hold the global economy hostage as a result
00:53of what it is doing as well as discussing the Middle East we'll also be discussing Ukraine where
01:00we continue to show our strong support for Ukraine that has come through the winter of attacks by
01:08Russia and I want to pay tribute to Ukraine's strength and resilience and at a time when we
01:14have also seen Iran and Russia provide each other with capabilities and support and we will cover
01:21other issues including the humanitarian crisis in Sudan and critical mineral supplies which are so
01:29crucial to all of our economies at a time of such global instability and insecurity it is so important
01:36that partnerships like the G7 and other countries that have been invited to join us today come together
01:42because we know it is the partnerships that we build abroad that make us stronger and make our security
01:48and economy stronger back at home thank you very much
02:05we're deeply concerned about the links between Russia and Iran that have been long-standing in terms of shared capabilities
02:13for example drones provided to Russia by Iran
02:17and that have been involved in the conflict by Ukraine but we have also seen support from Russia provided to
02:23Iran in the Middle East conflict as well and that is why I think as G7 countries we have a
02:30shared interest in coming together to discuss these issues and the way that we need to protect our global economy
02:38from countries that want to to weaponize our economy against us
02:44foreign secretary what conditions would be necessary for the UK and other nations to take part in a mission in
02:49the strait of Hormuz would there need to be a cessation of hostilities first
02:53well we need to see a swift resolution to this conflict that restores the regional stability that needs to include
03:03the strait of Hormuz and that is why we have more than 30 countries come together
03:08to talk about the processes that are needed to ensure the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz
03:15and also the protection for international shipping.
03:19And that's why, look, we have taken the approach of supporting defensive action,
03:24but also we've taken a different approach on the offensive action that has taken place as part of this conflict.
03:31But what we need is a partnership, including the diplomacy, including some of the discussions that we will have today,
03:36because, frankly, Iran cannot be able to just hold the global economy hostage as a result of a strait
03:45which is about international shipping routes and a freedom of navigation that has been so strongly supported
03:50at the United Nations, but also by countries across the world.
03:54Thank you very much. Thank you.
