00:07When you're kind of involved in the making of something, it's very hard to absorb or
00:11analyze what it means to people, what it was that made it click.
00:24Peaky Blinders, it really captured people's imaginations, first of all in this country,
00:28and then people would come back from holiday and say there's a Peaky Blinders bar in Magaluf
00:32and there's pictures of Tommy Shelby everywhere.
00:36When people started dressing like Peaky Blinders and getting their hair cut and having weddings,
00:41that was a marker for sure.
00:43At the time we didn't realize what a phenomenon it would go on to become.
00:47It's always a sort of a mysterious alchemy about why something has connected so deeply with audiences.
00:53This iconography that people have really embraced.
00:55You travel across the world and you can immediately see the silhouette of a Peaky Blinder.
01:03We'd never made a piece of television about mythologizing the working class in Britain.
01:07Everything is magnified and heightened.
01:11They were stories told to me by my parents who grew up in Small Heath in Birmingham in their 20s.
01:17My dad's uncles were illegal bookmakers and were known as the Peaky Blinders locally.
01:24I just always thought this is a great story.
01:28It doesn't feel like what one reads about in the history books.
01:35Gangsterism and that cold and that heightened morals that exist in that world.
01:42The clothes, the boots are well polished. I'm in charge of this, me.
01:46These are people who are born into poverty. They're not in charge of anything else.
01:50Underdogs that are overlooked, slightly on the fringes, that take control of their own lives and their own community and
01:56stand up for themselves.
01:58Even though they're a bunch of wrong-uns really, there is a kind of moral code to their family.
02:03It's Tommy Shelby. You can take his word.
02:07All of us only wanted to make this film if we felt like it was a significant enough addition to
02:14the story.
02:15We wanted to keep the best elements of Peaky Blinders, but then ramp it up.
02:21Heightened and hotter. Colder and darker and bigger and more extreme.
02:28Look for me, son.
02:30It's completely exceeded my aspiration.
02:34He's lost his fucking mind.
02:37I see things.
