00:51The search continues for Ireland's
00:54Home of the Year.
00:58Marie and Jo and their daughter Emily
01:00moved into this Georgian style home
01:02in West Cork after living in Germany
01:04for 25 years.
01:06So it's nearly a year since we moved in
01:08and it's changed quite a bit
01:10compared to the first day here.
01:13It's lovely to get up in the morning.
01:14Every day is exciting.
01:15I'm an artist.
01:17I trained in set design
01:18at the Abbey Theatre in Dublin.
01:20The previous owners had a love
01:21of contemporary design
01:23that we don't share.
01:25And to make it more in line
01:26with our taste
01:28we decided to go very gung-ho
01:30on the decor.
01:31Every room we put our stamp, you know.
01:34Yeah.
01:34We couldn't find wallpapers
01:35that we really liked.
01:37So we thought we'd just paint them
01:39to suit our needs.
01:41This is our favourite spot
01:43sitting on this lovely
01:45comfortable old couch.
01:46It's just gorgeous at night.
01:48We have the fire lighting,
01:50the door closed
01:50and the room embraces you
01:52with warmth.
01:53I feel at home
01:54sitting on this couch.
01:55I absolutely love it.

02:20So I'm quite surprised
02:22by these overly ornate

02:24I wasn't expecting that.
02:25So I'm intrigued
02:26about what's going on inside.

02:38Well, we've definitely
02:39stepped back in time.
02:40We certainly have.
02:42Back to what era,
02:43I wonder?
02:44Actually, I do feel
02:45like I've walked
02:46into my grandmother's
02:47late 1950s house.
02:48There's that overall sense
02:49in terms of particularly
02:50the design of the stairs
02:51and the doors.
02:52But also I'm seeing
02:53bits and pieces.
02:54My parents are going to kill me.
02:55That reference my childhood
02:56growing up in the 70s
02:57and 80s.

02:59that's sitting on the table.

04:47that I don't want to admit

04:56My mum used to make those.

06:46with the idea of that being your home,
06:49but at the same time,
06:50it's enjoyable.

07:26and would benefit
07:27from some restraint.

08:01This is the first time
08:02I've ever, I guess,
08:02done any type of interiors
08:04because I've rented for years.
08:05So as soon as I bought this place,
08:07I really kind of wanted
08:08to just get stuck
08:10into designing it
08:11because I've always loved
08:12interior design.
08:13We actually painted
08:14the entire apartment
08:15one color,
08:15and then we just added
08:17in different textures
08:18and loads of soft furnishings
08:20in the different rooms
08:20depending on kind of
08:21their function.
08:22I feel like the apartment
08:24is a really calm space
08:25because you don't have
08:26any, you know,
08:27strong colors
08:28or patterns in particular
08:29hitting you when you come in.
08:30It's lovely and bright
08:31and open,
08:32and it really does
08:33separate you from the city,
08:35but then you still have
08:36the beautiful views
08:36of the city.
08:37So this is our favorite spot
08:39here in our guest bedroom.
08:41This is primarily
08:42our work-from-home space.
08:44It's quiet
08:44and allows you
08:45to concentrate and focus,
08:46but also we needed
08:47a spare bedroom,
08:48so we have a day bed,
08:49and it also then serves
08:51as a place for us
08:52to work out in as well.
08:53We obviously live
08:54in a small apartment,
08:55so it was really important
08:56that we found a space
08:57that could have
08:58that multifunctional use.
09:00I definitely am nervous
09:01about the judges coming in.
09:03One of their main criticisms
09:04will probably be
09:05that there isn't much color
09:08and that it could be cluttered.
09:10I won't rely on that.
09:11I'll probably take it personally
09:12if they don't like it,
09:13but they're the experts,
09:14so we'll see.

10:43is just quite extraordinary.

10:47and tones
10:48that these homeowners

15:14down the side elevations
15:16and changes seasonally.
15:18So the house is effectively
15:19growing and changing
15:21all the time.
15:22I wanted something
15:23that was still very fluid
15:25inside, outside,
15:26but also something
15:27that can be warm and cosy.
15:29With two wee children
15:30running about,
15:31it can be chaos
15:32to say the least.
15:33But when it comes to lit
15:35on a good day
15:35and you open these sliders
15:37and they're going in and out
15:38and they're wee bicycles,
15:40going through the whole process,
15:42it makes it worth it.

15:50when we get the kids

15:51somewhere to unwind,

17:26but there's no visual connection

17:29you need a huge
17:30double height space
17:30but even a subtle one.
