00:00Meta and YouTube have for the first time been found liable in a case that accused the companies of intentionally
00:05creating addictive platforms that harmed the mental health of young users.
00:09A Los Angeles jury made this decision after eight days of jury deliberation and a seven-week trial in a
00:15lawsuit filed by a now 20-year-old named Kaylee who said that she became addicted to these platforms starting
00:20at a young age and that caused mental health challenges including anxiety, body dysmorphia and suicidal ideation.
00:27This jury found Meta and YouTube liable on all counts, finding that the companies were negligent in the design of
00:33their platforms, that they failed to warn users of the risks, and that they played a substantial role in those
00:39mental health harms that Kaylee experienced.
00:41This could set a precedent for hundreds of similar cases that have been filed against Meta and YouTube as well
00:47as TikTok and Snap which settled this case ahead of trial.
00:50And it's really a significant moment after years of parents and advocates and lawmakers raising concerns about the harms of
00:58these platforms to young users.
