00:26provider europeo? Ne parliamo con il CEO di Scaleway, Damien Lucas. Benvenuto, un grande piacere
00:32averla con noi. Hello and it's a pleasure to be with you. Allora, Scaleway arriva in Italia
00:40con una nuova cloud region. Che cosa significa questo per la crescita degli hyperscalers in
00:47Europa? Presentiamo anche ovviamente Scaleway a chi non vi conosce. So Scaleway, what we
00:53provide? We provide a truly european public cloud. By truly european, what I mean is a cloud
01:04provider, a public cloud provider that is immune to extraterritorial laws, that's number one,
01:12and independent technologically speak. Immune to extraterritorial laws, this is very simple,
01:18we want to protect our customers from the various cloud act, Patriot acts, etc., from the different
01:26other hyperscalers, especially the US and the Chinese hyperscalers. Independent technologically
01:34speaking, we want to protect our customers from a potential kill switch from those US and Chinese
01:43hyperscalers. As you probably know, looking at the public cloud market in Europe as of today, it's
01:51about 80% owned by US hyperscalers. This means that Europe is way too much dependent on foreign
01:59technology. And this is a major risk. And this is exactly what we want to prevent Europe from. We provide
02:08a truly European hyperscalers. That being said, what does it mean? It means that we build an
02:16infrastructure in Europe for European companies. Building in Europe means we need some data center
02:25in which we put our own servers, in which we put our own piece of software. And this is what
02:33we did
02:33in Amsterdam. This is what we did in Warsaw, in Poland. And this is what we did in Paris, France,
02:40and what we just did as of last week in Milano, Italy. This was a major announcement. And each time
02:49we
02:49spoke about a cloud region, in fact, what it is, it is a set of minimum three availability zones,
02:59meaning three data centers in which we will install our servers with our own software on it. Why three?
03:07Because this is modern technology. The previous IT was based on two, main and backup. But the modern IT
03:14is based on three, so that it's distributed and resilient by design. This is what we're providing.
03:21And this is what we're opening in Italy, a resilient by design cloud region.
03:29Diceva tre numero chiave.
03:53ingresso in Italia.
03:55So, multiple questions here, but let's start with the easiest one. The easiest one is, yes,
04:00I said this will be three. When we say three for different technical reason, it has to be in the
04:07same perimeter. We usually say that there should not be more than 50 kilometers apart, more than five,
04:14so that if there is a disaster on one of them, the other ones are not contaminated. But more than
04:2050,
04:21so basically all around Milano region, we have selected the three sites. We are building,
04:28we're actually installing the different savers into those three sites. Only one of them is currently
04:35online. The other two will come online before the end of the year. It's a matter of, actually,
04:41it's a matter of weeks. As of today, we need to start with the first one. This was last week
04:45and the other
04:46two are coming soon. It's a major investment. As you know, building a cloud infrastructure costs a lot.
04:55for every euro of revenue, we need to invest three euros of capex. Keep this in mind. And then you
05:07have
05:07an idea of how big this investment is. And this is the only figure I'm going to give for today,
05:13because
05:13at Scaleway we, generally speaking, do not share numbers in terms of investments, results, and so on.
05:22But you asked about what does it mean in terms of commitment to the economy. Let me give you one
05:31proof
05:32point. For one euro spent on Scaleway, 68 cents stay in the European economy. Whereas for one euro spent on
05:48a US hyperscaler, only 20 cents stay in the European economy. It's a major difference. 68 cents when
05:58with Scaleway, 20 when with US hyperscaler. So you could ask why only 68? That's very simple because
06:06still we purchase most of the different components. Hard drive, RAM, so memory for the savers are
06:15purchased mainly from Taiwan, Korea, etc, etc. And the CPUs, GPUs, etc, etc. They are mainly purchased from
06:24the US and this is a big portion of our spending. But still 68 cents out of one euro stay
06:34in European
06:34economy. And this is the impact we want to have on European economy and on Italian economy by
06:42actually investing a lot in Italy. And I spent about investment. Of course, it's about hardware
06:50investment, but it's also about people because we are building a team. I think what's very important
06:56to keep in mind is that Europe is fragmented, but the multicultural aspect of Europe is also one of the
07:04key
07:06advantage of Europe. And we need to build on that. So we need a local team based in Italy that
07:13speaks
07:14Italian in order to support our Italian customers. This is what we already built and what we will continue
07:23to expand with this first year in Italy.
07:40Well, in fact, there are very few European based and truly European based
07:47cloud providers, public cloud providers. So obviously you have local versions of the US cloud providers.
07:57But this is not truly European. OK, you can have some
08:02US technology run by
08:06an Italian partner. It stays your US technology.
08:11You can have an Italian branch office of a US company. Still, it's a US company. So our main differentiator
08:20is
08:22we are totally immune. When I say we are totally immune, it means one, we don't have any shareholder
08:30direct or indirect outside of the EU.
08:34Two, we don't have subsidiaries outside of the EU. And three, we don't have staff outside of the EU.
08:43Which means there is no way any law from any country can claim having an impact on Scareway.
08:53Because it can have an impact neither through a subsidiary, neither through a shareholder,
08:59neither through an employee. So that's the main differentiator. And then there are a few
09:06private cloud providers. Private cloud providers, what are those?
09:10Those are basically hosting companies. You give them your service and they run your service for you.
09:19The public cloud, it is totally different. Public cloud is about providing you
09:25with a toolbox. Not only servers, not only storage, not only compute, not only databases or whatever,
09:34but a complete set of tools that enable each company to build applications
09:42faster and in a more efficient way. This is what we're providing. And I believe we don't have much
09:50competition truly European to provide that kind of toolbar.
09:54And then, you said there are also interesting numbers related to what means to invest in Europe.
10:02A euro invested means 3 euro in capex. Ecco, the European part of the AI.
10:08What does it mean to build infrastructure made in Europe and above all sovereign?
10:14It's possible, and you're right.
10:16It is. And you're right.
10:24There are many challenges to build a truly European public cloud.
10:30Number one challenge is the amount of investment.
10:36It costs a fortune to build a public cloud.
10:40Luckily, at Scalway, we're part of a large telecom group,
10:44actually the fifth largest European telecommunication group
10:48that is called Iliad, operating in many different countries.
10:52The Iliad group operates in France, operates in Poland, in Italy,
10:57and states in Sweden, and the Baltics, and Ireland, and so on and so on.
11:03Really, being part of a large financial group,
11:07this is very important to be able to invest enough
11:11to build the leading European cloud provider.
11:16And then there are many other challenges.
11:19One of those challenges is that Europe is very fragmented.
11:23It means that in every country, we need to build local infrastructure,
11:27but we need also to comply with local regulation,
11:31to comply with local certifications, et cetera, et cetera.
11:35So it's an extra work to be done because of the fragmentation of Europe.
11:41Again, it's a lot of work.
11:42It's a lot of investment as well, but this is what we are committed to.
11:47And it's not because it's difficult that we won't do it.
11:53We just have to be smarter than anyone else
11:55to be able to overcome those challenges.
12:00Grazie a domino lucas, CEO di Scalway,
12:03per essere stato con noi alla prossima.
12:05Thank you very much.
