Gujarat is emerging as a key hub in India’s fight against rare genetic disorders, with a major breakthrough in Ahmedabad. The FRIGE’s Institute of Human Genetics has established the country’s first national biobank focused on Lysosomal Storage Disorders. Developed over 22 years, the biobank contains samples and clinical data from over 530 patients.Backed by the Gujarat State Biotechnology Mission, researchers are working on identifying genetic mutations, improving diagnostics, and developing affordable testing kits. The institute has already achieved success in diagnosing 19 rare disorders using advanced genetic sequencing and is exploring gene therapy solutions to make treatment more accessible. This initiative marks a significant step forward in strengthening India’s healthcare innovation and making rare disease treatment more affordable.

00:02In Gujarat's Ahmedabad, the Fridges Institute of Human Genetics, an NGO backed by government
00:08funding, hosts India's first national biobank for rare lysosomal storage disorders.
00:18Built over 22 years, it brings together patient samples and clinical data,
00:24helping researchers identify mutations, develop affordable diagnostics and advance indigenous treatments for life-threatening genetic diseases.
00:54It means that in many places, there are many mutations in the DNA, which is called lysosomal storage.
01:00This is the case.
01:04In this case, there is a first biobank that the treatment of these diseases,
01:12And with this, we will be able to help within our KVRIs, so the Biobank has a great help.
01:25Integrating DNA and clinical data, the Biobank helps identify mutations and develop solutions.
01:32With support from the Gujarat State Biotechnology Mission, researchers are working on low-cost diagnostic kits and advancing gene therapy
01:42for rare diseases.
02:02And in this case, we have made funding for our KVRIs, which has done research in Gujarat, and has done
02:11research in the Biobank.
02:14And in 2019, there was a special funding for India's molecular inversion probe-based sequencing.
02:34With treatments costing over 1 crore rupees annually, the focus is on affordability.
02:42The initiative is boosting self-reliance and strengthening Gujarat as a hub for genetic research and medical innovation.
02:59to fill out the name of KVRIs, the BIOBAN.
02:59While the Ramach has done research, the outcome of our KVRIs is a core working goal of the world.
