07:15This show defined an entire generation and it is so special to be here with you celebrating the 20th anniversary.
07:23Why did you decide this was the right way to return to Hannah?
07:28What I loved most about the TV show and being Hannah was that everybody could watch this.
07:35Everybody could have me in their living room.
07:37And, you know, if I do a show or a concert, it's exclusive to those who can make it.
07:43And this, to me, was the way that I could really invite everybody into this celebration.
07:48But it's really for the fans that grew up with me, our kind of moment of just looking at each
07:54other
07:54of how much growth, how much evolution and how much they've really supported and follow me,
08:00you know, from going from Hannah to Miley.
08:02It wasn't always easy.
08:05It was, you know, a bit of a turbulent transition at times.
08:09And this just feels like a moment of not only reflection of the show itself,
08:14but more just the longevity and the loyalty between me and everyone that I've grown up with.
08:20How did you even come up with the idea for a special?
08:23Okay, well, I learned a lot from Dolly.
08:25And one thing she taught me, which I love, is promote something before it's happening
08:30because then they can't say no.
08:31So I just started saying there was a Hannahversary special.
08:34There was none.
08:35And the Hannah Montana anniversary plans coming along?
08:38Absolutely. We're working hard on them.
08:40What are you going to do? Just tease us.
08:41I can't tell you.

08:46There's like a big birthday party I'm imagining.

08:51And then my team kept calling me being like, what is this Hannahversary?

08:57And I feel like if I can get the fans behind me, as they always are,
09:01and show how much this is wanted.
09:05And so I just started talking about a Hannahversary before a Hannahversary even existed.

09:10Okay, let's go back to the very beginning, like how you even got here, right?
09:15What do you think from that initial audition made you stand out to Disney?
09:22Well, the charisma, uniqueness, nerve, and talent, okay?

09:29I'm Miley Cyrus, and I'm auditioning for the role of Hannah Montana.

09:52What made me stand out, I think, in my audition was both my weakness and my strength.
09:59I had no previous experience in acting.
10:02I literally was just coming from Nashville, Tennessee.
10:06I was a little cheerleader.
10:07I was just, like, honestly trying to get back home, so nobody, like, stole my spot on the cheer team.
10:12And so I think I stood out because everything that I was doing was so authentic.
10:17It was so just who I am.
10:20No one ever taught me how to be that way.
10:22I had no reason to come out to LA and be confident, like, I can do this.
10:26Literally no ground to stand on.
10:28But I was just like, I sing, I dance, I wear a blonde wig, and I didn't want it that
10:35bad.
10:35Like, I really kind of want, there was a boy I had a crush on in the sixth grade,
10:38so I was just trying to get back to him, make him my boo.
10:41I was not like, if I go home, Mom, this is going to break my heart.
10:45I was like, I'd love to get it, but if I don't, like, at least I still get to date

10:51Wherever Jeff is in the world right now.
10:53I know where he is because I look at his Facebook every now and then.

12:04We had this little Hannah Montana script, right, about an everyday girl who wants to be,
12:08has a secret identity as a pop superstar.
12:10And I had this nutty ambition that we could turn a fictional pop star into a real-life superstar.
12:17And I thought, that's a pretty high bar.
12:20And that's what we cast for 11 months.
12:22We are down to the last two people.
12:24And you were this 12-year-old pistol, kind of raw and real and fresh out of Tennessee.
12:31And you both left.
12:33It was 10 people in the room.
12:34And we took a vote.
12:36Was it a landslide?
12:38That's what I want to know.
12:39I feel like it was like one and one.
12:41It wasn't a landslide.
12:42I didn't think it would be, which I like that better.
12:44It was not a landslide.
12:45And people put forth their arguments.
12:47Real opinions.
12:48And I had made a decision and I wrote an email to the team.
12:52I'm going to read you the email that I wrote.
12:54And it said, we pride ourselves not just on creating great television, but on creating stars.
13:00I am ready to pull the trigger on Miley.
13:03Is she a risk?
13:06Unquestionably.

13:12And whatever comes of this decision, I'm thrilled that all of us will be able to sit down over a
13:17drink in a few years and remember this moment when we decided to forsake the safe route for the riskier

14:15And they were experienced actors, so I was just figuring out how I was going to kind of, like, fit
14:24into a cast that they knew exactly what they were doing.

50:40Something I would say to the fans, which is not just because it's the 20th anniversary
50:47of Hannah Montana, it's the deepest thank you because my life is so beautiful and it hurts
50:55and pains me to know that not every pop star's experience is the one that I get to have.
51:00But there is a piece of my life that is very, it's really unique to me.
51:07And sometimes I, sometimes I can feel lonely in this experience because not everybody, there's
51:18no one I can really sit with that I can say, this is what my life is like.
51:23But that's where, that's where like, and I think the reason I'm so emotional is because
51:32as I get older, my dad gets older, my mom, she gets older.
51:37So many of the people that have paved the path for me to feel like I have a safety in
51:43this
51:43lifestyle.
51:44Um, I've been extremely blessed to have so much love within my family and now finding
51:55love in a different way, finding love to where I feel like I'm taking the next step into my
52:03womanhood of like creating a life with someone.
52:05I think that's, I mean, every body has, I think, a fantasy of wanting to feel loved.
52:12And I've always felt it from these different places, especially from the millions of people
52:17that, you know, they hold up.
52:19I love you signs at concerts or write it in the comments, but to experience it now and
52:24imagining what my next 20 years might look like is going to be so different than it did
52:30on a TV show.
52:31But again, so much of it will hopefully be the same, the jokes, the wisdom, the quality
52:38time in the kitchen, the ending the day by sitting on a couch and writing a song.
52:43But the only difference is that, you know, it'll be mine.
