00:01:30Now, why was that so painful?
00:01:33Why was that 60 seconds the most uncomfortable part of your day?
00:01:39See, I think it's because society tells us to avoid silence.
00:01:46And we're conditioned to think that something's wrong with the quiet.
00:01:51Okay, I can't take it anymore. What's in the bag?
00:01:54You really want to know?
00:01:55Yes!
00:01:56Okay, I know it's a little late, but happy graduation, babe.
00:02:00Oh my gosh! That looks amazing! Did you make this?
00:02:05I made the decision to buy it.
00:02:09Okay, just think about living here. Would you get lonely?
00:02:14I mean, there are times where you'd want to go here for a vacation or an escape.
00:02:19But the idea of living here, routinely, day to day.
00:02:24If I'm being honest with myself, I don't.
00:02:28Ah, that must be Hunter.
00:02:32Well, patience is his best quality.
00:02:37So obviously he's a piece of shit.
00:02:39I mean, what the fuck?
00:02:42You're just gonna let yourself in, huh?
00:02:44Yes, and you're welcome for me being here.
00:02:46What else would you be doing?
00:02:48I'm getting late.
00:02:49But, is too much silence a bad thing?
00:02:55Are the mundane relationships that we keep the only things weaving us to sanity?
00:03:03Are you sure this is okay?
00:03:05I mean, I know I said we'd go out to celebrate.
00:03:08I said, you can't look at this.
00:03:10Okay, this is perfect.
00:03:15Just us, that's okay?
00:03:22So, are you able to meet with my cousin next week?
00:03:25Um, no.
00:03:27Why not?
00:03:28There's a position open and she wants to interview you.
00:03:30I mean, we could maybe get you out of your parents' house?
00:03:33Uh, um, I'm busy next week.
00:03:38The whole week?
00:03:39You're just busy?
00:03:42Yeah.
00:03:44Okay, Mr. A-man, what are you busy with?
00:03:47Well, it's a surprise.
00:03:50Like a good surprise?
00:03:51Well, I think it's a good surprise.
00:03:54For you, it's like a surprise car crash.
00:03:58Hey!
00:04:03Yeah, she's a little mad at me.
00:04:06Hey, Dad.
00:04:07What are you, son?
00:04:08Hey, can I interview you?
00:04:10Sure, what about?
00:04:11Um, just like your job and, you know, your career?
00:04:19Yeah, maybe later.
00:04:22Some of the best art in the world was created in the darkest hours of those artists' lives.
00:04:28And I'm talking about the whole artistic spectrum, okay?
00:04:31Poets, musicians, filmmakers, painters, novelists, anyone who creates.
00:04:37And the thing is, those artists happily shared it because they, I don't know, they had to.
00:04:48Michaela!
00:04:49Michaela!
00:04:51Kurt Cobain, Van Gogh, Edgar Allan Poe.
00:04:54They've all found masterpieces through insanity.
00:04:56Well, I mean, I think it's a waste of time.
00:04:59But then also, I think it's kind of fucking dumb.
00:05:03Wow.
00:05:03Okay.
00:05:04I mean, clearly, you're going through a quarter-life crisis.
00:05:06So, that's fine.
00:05:07Anyways, back to the interview.
00:05:09You've spent the last three months growing a depression beard.
00:05:11This isn't a depression beard.
00:05:13That is a depression beard, and you know it!
00:05:16You are three days away from a straight-up homeless beard.
00:05:19Okay, cool, man.
00:05:20Thanks so much for coming out.
00:05:22You know what?
00:05:22I'm being a good friend.
00:05:24And good friends, tell the fucking truth.
00:05:26Ernest Hemingway said that terrible mood of depression, of whether it's any good or not,
00:05:30is known as the artist's reward.
00:05:34I'll be honest with you, I haven't taken anything seriously in a very long time.
00:05:41It's time I do.
00:05:43So, the plan!
00:05:44To create loneliness.
00:05:47Michaela's going to drop me off deep in the Georgia mountains.
00:05:50No town whatsoever for 20 miles.
00:05:52No car, no phone, no GPS.
00:05:55Just me, alone in the woods, with my thoughts for five days.
00:06:01You know, look at me, man.
00:06:02I did it.
00:06:03I did the sell-out thing that you're talking about.
00:06:05It got me two weeks paid vacation, benefits, and, you know, I get to pretend I'm good at golf every
00:06:09once in a while.
00:06:10It's not bad.
00:06:11Wow.
00:06:12No, I'm sorry.
00:06:14There's so much to look forward to when you put it like that.
00:06:16You know what I think your fucking problem is?
00:06:17Is that I think you've seen too many movies with manic pixie dream girls in them, okay?
00:06:22What?
00:06:22You know what I'm talking about.
00:06:23It's just these girls who are just like, just find your passion.
00:06:26It's exactly what you sound like, okay?
00:06:27Just find your passion.
00:06:28And then once you've found that passion, just hug it, okay?
00:06:31And then that hug will bloom into happiness and joy.
00:06:36And you'll just come back from the dead and start just loving life.
00:06:42Oh, you're done.
00:06:43Thank God.
00:06:43You're done.
00:06:44Okay.
00:06:44Manic pixie dream girls aren't real.
00:06:46Let's just do the thing that I invited you over here to help me with, okay?
00:06:51Can we just do that?
00:06:53Please.
00:06:55Where were we?
00:06:57Where were we?
00:06:59We were at finding your passion and hugging it.
00:07:05All right, so Hunter.
00:07:07Yes?
00:07:07Tell me about your best friend, Clayton.
00:07:11Oh, man.
00:07:12He is the clumsiest person in the world.
00:07:14I mean, he's clumsy, but I wouldn't say he's the clumsiest person in the world.
00:07:18No, it's true.
00:07:19Anyone clumsier than Clayton is dead.
00:07:22Let's see, what else?
00:07:23God, this is going to be so good.
00:07:25I mean, he is really smart, but you can't call him bright.
00:07:30One time, he ate gas station sushi.
00:07:33Okay.
00:07:33He likes baths better than showers.
00:07:35Okay, I mean things pertaining to this experiment,
00:07:37not weird shit you know about each other.
00:07:40In high school, he would make study guides at finals time for all the students,
00:07:47but he would spend so much time making these study guides to sell them
00:07:51that he wouldn't spend any time actually studying,
00:07:54and then he would fail himself.
00:07:58But, you know, I mean, he'd always come off with like a thousand bucks or so
00:08:02for Christmas or summer break or whatever.
00:08:05That's just the first thing that comes to me.
00:08:09No, that's good.
00:08:14Can I just say one more thing?
00:08:15Oh my gosh.
00:08:17So what?
00:08:18God, you just graduated.
00:08:19You don't know what you're going to do with your life.
00:08:20Welcome to everybody's thought process that's ever graduated.
00:08:24You're just scared.
00:08:25First time in your life, you don't have everything planned out for you.
00:08:29Yes, thank you.
00:08:31It's finally been said, okay?
00:08:33I think you're fine, and we can continue now, but I think you're fine.
00:08:38Okay.
00:08:40All right, so what's the first fucking question?
00:08:45Um...
00:08:49I don't know.
00:08:50I don't know.
00:08:51That's it.
00:08:55There's like a whole foot.
00:08:57I know.
00:08:59Hunter, are you on a wide enough lens to capture all of your hatred?
00:09:02Got it.
00:09:03Oh, good.
00:09:04We can continue now.
00:09:05All right.
00:09:06Good afternoon, Michaela.
00:09:08And, Clayton, it's the eve of your solo camping trip.
00:09:13And how are we feeling this afternoon?
00:09:15Take it back.
00:09:16How are you feeling?
00:09:18Excited.
00:09:19A little nervous.
00:09:21And what about you, Michaela?
00:09:24Annoyed.
00:09:24Frustrated.
00:09:25Upset.
00:09:27Angry.
00:09:28Confused.
00:09:29Just all of the negative words in the English language.
00:09:32Oncolaire.
00:09:35It's French for something mean.
00:09:38Hunter, how did I describe how she is treating me the other day?
00:09:43It was a metaphor.
00:09:45No, I'd love to hear this metaphor.
00:09:47No, I wouldn't do it.
00:09:48No, please.
00:09:49I would...
00:09:49Don't.
00:09:50I'd love to hear it.
00:09:51Don't.
00:09:52You're treating me like I am running over your dog while I'm stabbing your family to death
00:09:58while simultaneously banging your best friend.
00:10:04So?
00:10:08We can start the interview now.
00:10:11Okay.
00:10:12Um, uh, why, Michaela, uh, why on your best, I mean, to your, uh, understanding, to your
00:10:20best understanding, is he doing this?
00:10:23What?
00:10:24Like, why is his inspiration to do this?
00:10:28Or, or what?
00:10:29Dude, you're gonna have to work on your interviewing voice.
00:10:31And, and your dyslexia.
00:10:33Like, I straight up wrote the question.
00:10:34Just read it off the card.
00:10:35Stop.
00:10:35He's helping you.
00:10:37No, no, no.
00:10:38Right now, it feels like I'm helping him by giving him a fucking reading lesson.
00:10:40Clayton!
00:10:42No, that was good.
00:10:44Uh, you mentioned that story from high school earlier?
00:10:48Yeah, yeah.
00:10:50Um, in 10th grade.
00:10:51Our teacher, um, she made us write these, uh, plays.
00:10:56You know, these short plays.
00:10:59And Clayton decides to write this crazy story about, uh, a mythical land with this,
00:11:07king and queen, and it's like a bunch of bullshit.
00:11:09But the queen gets kidnapped by the enemy king of another land.
00:11:14So, the queen's name was Syphilis.
00:11:19Okay?
00:11:20So, I mean, just imagine this.
00:11:22This, you know, class full of immature high schoolers just on the floor.
00:11:27The teacher gives him an F.
00:11:30She said it was well written, but the material was inappropriate.
00:11:35I don't know.
00:11:36I think that story really sums up both sides of Clayton.
00:11:41Michaela, I'm gonna be fine, okay?
00:11:43I mean, I'm pretty sure if Tom Hanks did it for five years, then I can do it for five
00:11:47days.
00:11:48Tom Hanks?
00:11:49Yeah, he did it in Cast Away.
00:11:52That's a movie!
00:11:53Tom Hanks isn't real!
00:11:55No, Tom Hanks is definitely real.
00:11:56Okay, it's not you just going out into the woods that bothers me.
00:12:03What bothers me is the fact that you're disconnecting from literally everything.
00:12:08No car, no phone.
00:12:11I mean, what if you get hurt?
00:12:13What if you get attacked by a bear or someone robs you?
00:12:16I mean, I don't know if he's out there.
00:12:17No, none of that's gonna happen!
00:12:19I'm gonna feel alone.
00:12:20That's it.
00:12:22I'm gonna learn things about myself and the process.
00:12:26I'm gonna come back with a great story.
00:12:30That...
00:12:34That's it.
00:12:38Michaela.
00:12:38Michaela.
00:12:43Michaela.
00:12:44Oh, that was awkward.
00:12:47Oh, what are you gonna do?
00:12:49Side with her now?
00:12:52So, this is it.
00:12:55Last thoughts before I head up.
00:13:01I'm a little nervous, but...
00:13:04This is my chance.
00:13:07This is my chance to harness some sort of storm.
00:13:11And once evolved, share it.
00:13:24So, wish me luck.
00:13:38And we're headed up to the mountains.
00:13:41Michaela's psyched.
00:13:42You can tell by the vein in her forehead how excited she is.
00:13:45Clayton, it's way too early.
00:13:47I want you to look into this camera and say one positive thing.
00:13:52It can be anything.
00:13:54Hey, it's pretty cool that the sun rose this morning.
00:13:57It's awesome that we're both currently not on fire.
00:14:01Because that would suck.
00:14:02You know, I could just turn around.
00:14:04No, no.
00:14:05That's...
00:14:06We're good.
00:14:07I just wanted to be said, though, ahead of time,
00:14:09that I'm going to come back with this dissertation on life.
00:14:13You know, this life dissertation.
00:14:15And you're going to apologize.
00:14:17Prediction submitted.
00:14:18There it is.
00:14:20Can we please just stop talking about the trip anymore?
00:14:27I'm sure Christopher Columbus's girlfriend wasn't happy
00:14:30whenever he went on the boat to America.
00:14:32Yeah, that's the same.
00:14:35She was literally like, you're going to fall off Earth.
00:14:38She probably wasn't as mean to him.
00:14:41UN, turn the car around.
00:14:43I'll find a different means for creative inspiration
00:14:46involving black tar heroin and alley syringes.
00:14:50Oh my God, Clayton.
00:14:56Jokes that do not land
00:14:58Starring Clayton Thompson
00:15:01Written, directed, and produced by Clayton Thompson
00:15:05Jokes that do not land
00:15:12I fucking love that show.
00:15:14I watch it every day.
00:15:28Hey, let's play a game called What Decade Is It?
00:15:32Excuse me, ma'am.
00:15:33Where's the nearest rollerblade store?
00:15:42The fact that you one day woke up without a sense of humor
00:15:46kind of bothers me.
00:15:48Well, you know, actually,
00:15:49I'm storing up every stupid thing you say in my head
00:15:53so I can laugh at it later.
00:15:55You know, just so I won't give you the satisfaction.
00:15:57Oh, that's the best news I've heard in a long time.
00:16:03Yeah, well, I'm a sick person.
00:16:08Can you just put the camera down?
00:16:10Let's just talk.
00:16:13Yeah.
00:16:15But did you?
00:16:16Did you ever play?
00:16:17Um, I played T-ball, but I got kicked off the team.
00:16:21You got kicked off your T-ball team?
00:16:24Yes.
00:16:24Wait, T-ball like when you're five?
00:16:27Yes, it's not funny.
00:16:28Give me a thousand years of guesses.
00:16:30I'd have no idea.
00:16:31Like, how does somebody get kicked off the team?
00:16:33Okay, all right, I'll explain.
00:16:36So every week the teammates would take turns
00:16:38bringing snacks for after the game.
00:16:40Uh-huh.
00:16:40And when it was my week,
00:16:41my mom made these boss chocolate and peanut butter cupcakes.
00:16:45Anyways, there's this one girl who never threw me the ball,
00:16:48was always kind of rude to me,
00:16:49and she refused to eat my mom's cupcakes.
00:16:52Which is unacceptable.
00:16:54So I got sick of it one day
00:16:56and smashed a cupcake in her face.
00:16:58And, uh, then she went to the hospital.
00:17:01What?
00:17:02Turns out she was severely allergic to peanuts.
00:17:08So, uh, yeah, that traumatizing event
00:17:11ended my baseball career.
00:17:13Why did you never tell me that?
00:17:15Well, I tend to skip stories
00:17:17where I almost kill a five-year-old child.
00:17:22So what is this place exactly?
00:17:25Uh, I don't know.
00:17:27Just some patch of land between two mountains.
00:17:29Nothing's there, though.
00:17:30That's all I know.
00:17:45It's all I've waited for days and days and days.
00:17:55So I wait for days and days and days.
00:18:02Still, you never showed.
00:18:05Where were you?
00:18:08When the world was sitting?
00:18:12You.
00:18:13When the devil came grinning you.
00:18:18What have you been up to?
00:18:32I guess this is it.
00:18:35You sure?
00:18:37Yeah, better place than any.
00:18:40You, I don't know.
00:18:43I don't know.
00:18:54I don't know.
00:19:20Wow, we really are out in the middle of nowhere.
00:19:24Good.
00:19:26I hope I remember how to get back here.
00:19:29No, that's not funny, okay?
00:19:30You use your phone and you drop a pen.
00:19:32Baby, you know I lose things all the time.
00:19:34Wow, no, it didn't get any funnier that time.
00:19:37Well, you know, what if I die?
00:19:39And no one's here to come get you in six days.
00:19:42An 18-wheeler just runs me off the road and bam!
00:19:45No more Mikayla.
00:19:47No one to come get you.
00:19:51Well, that was dark.
00:19:52Yeah, and you know, I actually didn't even need a loan camping trip for that one.
00:19:56It just sort of came to me.
00:19:59Well played.
00:20:04Hey, I'm gonna meet with your cousin when I get back.
00:20:08Look, I know you don't want to be a corporate vlogger.
00:20:11Yeah, but I still want to meet with her.
00:20:15Well, I mean, there's no harm in trying.
00:20:18Yeah, exactly.
00:20:21Look, I'm sorry I've seemed like such a bitch lately.
00:20:27It's just...
00:20:29It's because I love you, right?
00:20:31Of course, yeah.
00:20:57Shit.
00:20:58What?
00:20:58The tree's down.
00:21:00I guess this'll do.
00:21:09Here.
00:21:15I'll lead you in.
00:21:22Mikayla?
00:21:27Okay.
00:21:28Turn this way.
00:21:31You're not gonna kill me, are you?
00:21:33No.
00:21:33No.
00:21:36Here, hang on.
00:21:37Let me get this up.
00:21:42Alright.
00:21:46Okay, I'm gonna be fine.
00:21:48What will fix this?
00:21:49Nothing.
00:21:50No!
00:21:52Don't say nothing, okay?
00:21:53What will fix this?
00:21:55It's not like that.
00:21:57What?
00:21:59When I am done with this whole project, okay?
00:22:02I will spend time in church.
00:22:05I will watch Full House.
00:22:06Okay, stop, stop.
00:22:07I don't need your sarcasm right now, okay?
00:22:09Just...
00:22:09Just let me feel how I feel.
00:22:14Okay.
00:22:15Okay, I just want you to be real for a moment.
00:22:19What?
00:22:23What do you want?
00:22:25Okay, what do you want out of this?
00:22:28I want us.
00:22:32You're gonna have to explain that to me.
00:22:34I just said it.
00:22:36I want us.
00:22:36Look, I'm not even using the misogynist answer of you.
00:22:40I want us.
00:22:41That doesn't even make sense, okay?
00:22:43Because as far as I'm concerned, you have us.
00:22:49So, I want to know what you actually mean when you say you want us.
00:22:54It means I want us, okay?
00:22:57I am not willing to give you some dispassionate version of that person, okay?
00:23:02Some detached guy who gave up on every single dream straight out of the gate.
00:23:06I'm not gonna do that.
00:23:08You deserve better.
00:23:11Give me the camera.
00:23:13Give me the camera.
00:23:14Give me the camera.
00:23:15Why?
00:23:15Give me the camera.
00:23:22Okay.
00:23:25Clayton, I'm gonna ask you one more time.
00:23:29Alright?
00:23:31What do you want?
00:23:32What is the driving force behind this?
00:23:35What is bothering you so much that you feel like you have to do this?
00:23:39Okay?
00:23:40Just say it.
00:23:46My dad feels stuck at his job.
00:23:50He doesn't say it, but he doesn't have to.
00:23:56I'm not gonna be that way.
00:23:58You love your dad.
00:23:59Don't talk shit about him, okay?
00:24:01I love him.
00:24:01I don't respect him.
00:24:02There is a difference.
00:24:04Your father works a job he hates so he can provide for his family.
00:24:08How is he not a fucking superhero?
00:24:12You just...
00:24:14You don't understand.
00:24:17So what are you gonna do now?
00:24:20I've already told you.
00:24:21I'm here.
00:24:22You've seen this thing.
00:24:23I'm going to write a story.
00:24:25I'm gonna make a novel.
00:24:26I'm gonna write it.
00:24:27I'm gonna make you proud.
00:24:28You are going to be proud of me!
00:24:31I am proud.
00:24:42Okay.
00:24:46You're not proud.
00:24:50Look.
00:24:52I know how you're feeling, Clayton.
00:24:56Alright?
00:24:57You want...
00:24:57You want to be great.
00:24:59Everyone does.
00:25:00Put the camera down.
00:25:01No!
00:25:02No.
00:25:03You want to be great.
00:25:05Okay?
00:25:06You're gonna listen to me.
00:25:11You see people post things online.
00:25:15And you think they're happy.
00:25:17But they're only posting the highlight reels.
00:25:23But you look at them.
00:25:25And you think you're not good enough.
00:25:28What the hell?
00:25:29You are.
00:25:31You are good enough.
00:25:39You're good enough.
00:25:39Watch this in a couple of days and see if you believe yourself.
00:25:48Come here.
00:25:49Come here.
00:25:56I love you.
00:25:58I love you, too.
00:26:00I love you more than the nostalgic memory of a blockbuster video.
00:26:05I love you more than peanut butter and chocolate.
00:26:08No, that's impossible. Don't say something you can't take back.
00:26:11It's true. I do. I do.
00:26:18Goodbye.
00:26:20Bye.
00:26:21I'll see you in a couple of days.
00:26:59Mikayla?
00:27:02So this is it.
00:27:07this is where I'll find myself
00:27:10spend all my graduation money
00:27:13buying a camera, batteries, and cards
00:27:19I'm a fucking idiot
00:27:23first night
00:27:26it's not so bad out here
00:27:30just quiet
00:27:31besides the cicadas, it's quiet
00:27:37I can actually hear myself think
00:27:39don't love it, but I can
00:27:46it's definitely creepy out here
00:27:50but I have to ask the question
00:27:54would having someone with me
00:27:56make it any less dangerous
00:28:01and the answer is no
00:28:02but it takes being alone
00:28:06to realize you're afraid
00:28:18hello?
00:28:21is anyone there?
00:28:26so, I survived the first night
00:28:28I just ate breakfast
00:28:30a granola bar
00:28:32which will also be dinner
00:28:35let me say one thing
00:28:36this is not the body of a man
00:28:38who eats two granola bars a day
00:28:40this is the body of a man
00:28:42who eats a granola box a snack
00:28:46so, thoughts on last night
00:28:50one thing that comes to mind
00:28:52one word would be aware
00:28:57I was aware of every sound that was around me
00:29:01the trees blowing in the wind
00:29:06the leaves skipping on the ground
00:29:08everything was so crisp
00:29:12honestly, it was amazing
00:29:18well, I am bored as shit
00:29:22look what I found
00:29:24bottom of the seventh
00:29:26two outs
00:29:27two strikes
00:29:28no balls
00:29:29man on second and third
00:29:30and the pitch
00:29:33oh, it's hit a mile high
00:29:36and three miles long
00:29:38yes, it could go
00:29:39all the way
00:29:41upper decker home run
00:29:43and that pitch will send Clayton
00:29:45into a month-long binge
00:29:46of depression, alcoholism
00:29:47and self-loathing
00:29:52lumberjackin' in the forest
00:29:56that is not happening
00:29:59oh, come on
00:30:03that is a creepy tree
00:30:28these trees are monotonous
00:30:31it'd be hell to get lost in it
00:30:35I don't know
00:30:36it's somehow not as scary in the daytime
00:30:39it reminds me of whenever I was a little kid
00:30:41and I just ran out into the forest
00:30:45making up stories along the way
00:30:47living my own little journey
00:30:52oftentimes being chased by something
00:30:57a ninja
00:30:58like, all the time, actually
00:30:59I don't know
00:31:00what the hell that's about
00:31:09I can make that jump, right?
00:31:14you got this
00:31:22so gross
00:31:26what the hell
00:31:27water is that?
00:31:31jeez, disgusting
00:31:41night's coming
00:31:42soon enough
00:31:48if you guys could smell me right now
00:31:51there are no words
00:31:53I used to be like
00:31:54bullshit
00:31:55there's a word for everything
00:31:56nope
00:31:57not this smell
00:32:00smells like
00:32:02two dead animals
00:32:03crawled inside of
00:32:06three dead animals
00:32:07just to shit
00:32:08and then die
00:32:11it's night two
00:32:13it's late
00:32:14real late
00:32:17heard a lot of noises tonight
00:32:19it's the longest
00:32:20I've ever gone
00:32:22without seeing someone
00:32:25I mean, sure
00:32:26I've had those days
00:32:27where I disappear
00:32:28into a sofa
00:32:29and binge watch
00:32:3012 hours of TV
00:32:31while screening all my calls
00:32:33I call those
00:32:35dark days
00:32:36but I also call them
00:32:38everything I've ever wanted days
00:32:40so new observation
00:32:42there's a fine line
00:32:43between delight and depression
00:32:50I don't know though
00:32:51this is just
00:32:52different
00:32:59nothing's there
00:33:01nothing's there
00:33:03nothing's there
00:33:17nothing's there
00:33:22fuck
00:33:39hello

00:33:53when when no I will not calm down okay okay I will not calm down no do not
00:34:00assume the worst whenever you call back okay because this phone is gonna be in
00:34:04pieces on the dirt my heartbeat hasn't slowed so Michaela snuck in a burner
00:34:15phone into my bag whenever I was gassing up she also left this some sort of memory
00:34:25card with something to play anyway cheap scare of the night moving on I keep
00:34:35hearing those noises though sounds like footsteps I have this theory about
00:34:45pushing the limit of sleeplessness it goes like this when you stay awake longer
00:34:51than you're used to your brain being such a powerful mysterious thing that it is it
00:34:59becomes aware that you're tired and the brain being the powerful and mysterious
00:35:06thing that it is it compensates what I found is it overcompensates creating some
00:35:16sort of a heightened creative state so I might just stay up riding all night
00:35:27well I I won't bore you with this
00:35:44hello hello is anyone there
00:35:46hello hello hello hello hello hello hello hello hello hello hello hello hello hello hello hello hello hello hello hello

00:36:14hello hello hello hello hello hello hello hello hello hello hello hello hello hello hello hello hello hello hello hello
00:36:14hello
00:36:19I know it's an animal.
00:36:23I just didn't see it.
00:36:26It was big.
00:36:28It was...
00:36:35You always feel like you're being followed in the woods.
00:36:39You never are.
00:36:41It's just paranoia in the night.
00:37:12It's just paranoia.
00:37:24Nothing's been touched.
00:37:29A couple weeks ago, I had a dream.
00:37:34And in this dream, I was writing the short story about this character that was going crazy because of this
00:37:40dark, shadowy entity that wouldn't leave him alone.
00:37:45And I'm laying on my stomach on the sofa, typing on my laptop, and then I fell asleep.
00:37:54And that's when it happened.
00:37:58And then I woke up to something slowly pulling me.
00:38:04And the second that I became aware of what it was, it yanked me off the sofa.
00:38:12And I flew upright, and I was levitating.
00:38:16My feet were off the ground, and I was frozen.
00:38:22And I tried to scream, but the second I tried, the most unbelievably tight grip came around my throat.
00:38:33And it all went blurry, and then I woke up.
00:38:39I woke up in the exact same place I had fallen asleep.
00:38:48If immersing myself in this terrifying world can affect me that much, down deep, there is a story waiting to
00:38:55be found.
00:38:56I'm kind of scared to fall asleep now.
00:38:59I was hoping you could keep me company, though.
00:39:05What was it?
00:39:07My mom used to quote this verse in Joshua something.
00:39:13Be strong and courageous, do not be frightened, do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you
00:39:19wherever you go.
00:39:26Everything is going to be fine.
00:39:30I know that. I know it.
00:39:34Everything is fine.
00:39:40My uncle used to say that if you live close enough to people where you can't scream at the end
00:39:47of a bad day without getting in trouble, then you live too close to people.
00:39:56My uncle was a fucking liar.
00:40:14So, the sun is offensively bright in the morning.
00:40:22Just like a big old fuck you from nature.
00:40:29But, I survived night two.
00:40:35Yay!
00:40:38Being out here, I've really gotten to recall some memories I'm pretty sure I would have forgotten.
00:40:44Once again, it comes back to this idea that I can't shake, that we're just surrounded by so much noise,
00:40:51and we don't get the time to even exercise these great memories.
00:40:59Anyway, the last couple hours, I've been thinking about some of the funniest stories of my life.
00:41:09It kind of makes me wish I had journaled more.
00:41:14I've had too good of a life not to.
00:41:18One story, though.
00:41:21It was the first camping trip that we'd ever taken.
00:41:25We went camping, and we went on this drunk hike through the forest.
00:41:29And we ended up on this gravel road.
00:41:32Not a car, not a sound for miles.
00:41:36And then all of a sudden, Hunter said it.
00:41:38He said, guys, guys, turn off your lights, turn off your lights.
00:41:41So we did.
00:41:42We all ducked down on the gravel road.
00:41:44We were scared.
00:41:46And we said, what's up?
00:41:47What's going on?
00:41:48And he said, this is life.
00:41:54Dark, unsure, uncertain.
00:41:58And you can sit here and not become a man, or you can walk towards it.
00:42:05And we all said, Hunter, you've probably drank too much.
00:42:09But he stood up, and he said, no, no.
00:42:13I am seriously.
00:42:15Be seriously.
00:42:16I am seriously right now.
00:42:20He said, this is how I want to live my life.
00:42:23I want to sprint towards life.
00:42:26And so he said, you assholes, keep off your flashlights.
00:42:32And then he sprinted.
00:42:35He sprinted as fast as he could for a long time.
00:42:42And then we hear it.
00:42:45Thud.
00:42:46Ah, shit.
00:42:50He had ran directly off the road and into a tree and then fell into a giant pile of thorns.
00:42:59And the whole time we were walking him back, he just kept saying, that's life.
00:43:04That's life.
00:43:06Life is hard.
00:43:10I know I'm telling that story to nobody right now, but any excuse to tell it.
00:43:22So, I just got back to the campsite, and something got into my food.
00:43:30On top of that, there is a hole in the bottom of my water jug.
00:43:38So, that's where we're at.
00:43:48Hey friends, I found the story I want to write about.
00:43:53It involves a protagonist who's a little bit lonely.
00:44:01I don't know.
00:44:02I've always been taught, you write what you feel.
00:44:06You write what you feel, or you write something that doesn't mean anything.
00:44:14And I think, honestly, if I can somehow isolate fear with my protagonist,
00:44:24I think I'll have the story I'm looking for.
00:44:29A character with only his own thoughts to believe in.
00:44:36Fuck, I've never been able to get inspired in the daytime.
00:44:46I always get sidetracked and watch TV.
00:44:50Well, I think that fits my theory about creativity.
00:44:58It'll come at night.
00:45:02So, until then, I'll just wait.
00:45:18I have to see it.
00:45:21Woo!
00:45:29Woo!
00:45:29Woo!
00:45:34Woo!
00:45:44What is it?
00:45:46Woo!
00:45:58What?
00:46:27It's the third night.
00:46:30I've heard footsteps since about 9 o'clock.
00:46:35We haven't stopped.
00:46:41I can't leave.
00:46:46This has to be some sick joke.
00:46:51At this point, I'm just, I'm talking just to not hear silence.
00:46:57Disregard any and all bullshit.
00:46:59I speak about.
00:47:00Okay, I might tell a story.
00:47:02I might create a story.
00:47:04I might sing a fucking nursery rhyme.
00:47:06I don't, I don't know.
00:47:07I might talk even though I don't know what I'm fucking saying.
00:47:10I know my sensitivity to noise is heightened out here, but I heard something.
00:47:27Hello?
00:47:31Is anyone there?
00:47:33I don't know.
00:47:52I don't know what I'm saying.
00:48:03I don't know what I'm saying.
00:48:05I'm not going back I'm not going back I don't care I don't care I'm not going back I'm not
00:48:19going back
00:49:00I'm not going back
00:49:03At this point I want to run into somebody I want to know what I'm fucking running from
00:49:23I've been walking for two or three hours now
00:49:35I haven't seen a road or a house
00:49:45Or heard a car
00:49:49Everything is the same
00:49:54Where am I?
00:50:18I'm not going back
00:50:25I'm not going back
00:50:36I'm done
00:51:06I'm not going back
00:51:16I'm not going back
00:51:23I'm not going back
00:51:27I'm not going back
00:51:53There's a cabin
00:51:54There's a cabin
00:51:55There's a cabin
00:52:26I'm not going back
00:52:27What the fuck?
00:52:37What is this place?
00:52:44Is this a Bible?
00:53:08Is this a Bible?
00:53:39This is the creepiest place I've ever seen.
00:53:45Six chairs in a perfect circle.
00:53:53Is anyone there?
00:54:01I'm gonna die here.
00:54:07Be strong and courageous.
00:54:10Do not be frightened and do not be dismayed.
00:54:14For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.
00:54:23Oh.
00:54:26Oh.
00:54:31Oh.
00:54:33Oh, my God.
00:55:21Oh, my God.
00:55:33Oh, my truth.
00:55:49In the beginning, there was nothing.
00:55:52In Jephthah, the Savior, worshipped it holy.
00:55:57He prayed to nothing for nothing to return eternally.
00:56:03We pursue daily his acceptance and aspire to one day become nothing as he did.
00:56:25Yep, I'm back at the campsite.
00:56:31Why am I here?
00:56:36One time, I ate gas station sushi.
00:56:39Man, do I make good decisions.
00:56:43It's like I run a fucking irresponsibility brothel.
00:56:52I cannot leave.
00:56:56She knows where I am by GPS.
00:57:01I cannot fucking leave.
00:57:07If I die, I die.
00:57:11Everybody does.
00:57:14Everybody that ever existed before 150 years ago, they all did it.
00:57:20It's one of the only things that we have in common.
00:57:25We're not all white.
00:57:27We're not all black.
00:57:28We're not all tall.
00:57:29We're not all short.
00:57:33But we all die.
00:57:36Somehow, that's comforting.
00:57:46Michaela, where are you?
00:57:50There's something here.
00:57:53I haven't seen it, but there's something here.
00:58:03I can't leave.
00:58:08I just have to wait it out.
00:58:11Are you fucking kidding me?
00:58:22What should I do, Mr. Red Dot?
00:58:29When I was a little kid, my best friend was a pitchback.
00:58:34You know the netting that throws the balls back to you?
00:58:38His name was Gus.
00:58:41Gus was such an asshole.
00:58:44He always tried to peg me with baseballs.
00:58:53That was funny.
00:58:55That was funny.
00:58:56Don't just sit there, okay?
00:58:59Laugh at me!
00:59:04I'm sorry.
00:59:06I'm sorry I raised my voice.
00:59:10You're just so passive.
00:59:15So I am sorry.
00:59:20Do you accept my apology?
00:59:27Do you accept my apology?
00:59:30Do you accept my apology?
00:59:33If you're not going to talk to me, then I'm going to fucking kill you.
00:59:39Go ahead.
00:59:40My first word was ball.
00:59:43I don't remember when I started playing baseball, but I played it all my life, all through high school.
00:59:48I was a pitcher.
00:59:51at high school we made it to the semi-finals i'm one pitch away from making it to the finals
00:59:57it's a man on second and third and what do i do i throw a fastball right down the middle
01:00:04three run home run i know it seems stupid but in high school baseball was life
01:00:12so the whole rest of the hour and a half all these people started coming up to me telling
01:00:17me what a good job i did and how lucky this batter was that he hit a home run
01:00:24i just wanted to be alone
01:00:28looking back on that day right now it seems like a utopia
01:00:38best day of my life
01:00:43i guess i'll watch this
01:00:47at least give me something to do
01:00:52so clayton we hope you're having an amazing trip and i hope you're finding all of the things you're
01:00:58searching for and we decided that after our day of interviews there was something we wanted to tell

01:01:24that's
01:01:25what really counts no it's true you do you make me laugh you definitely try and that is so admirable
01:01:31but anyway we know you can come back with something great um we know how capable you are
01:01:36and we hope you do um but we just want you to come home
01:01:42and to shave your fucking depression beard

01:03:24i'm scared to let my mind become idle because
01:03:28it might not be mine again
01:03:31i was wrong though
01:03:36about fear
01:03:44my new thoughts
01:03:54mr red dot
01:03:57my new thoughts
01:03:58are the fear
01:04:01is actually based in the mind
01:04:05i mean what is
01:04:07scarier
01:04:09than knowing your sanity
01:04:10is actually crumbling
01:04:13i mean it's scarier than any monster
01:04:15could ever be
01:04:16because if you are chased
01:04:17by a monster
01:04:19at least you can run
01:04:20but whenever you are insane
01:04:22you have nothing to believe in
01:04:24but your own thoughts
01:04:27and they're lies
01:04:30they're lies
01:04:32they're not even real
01:04:37so you're more than alone
01:04:47the next obvious sound i hear
01:04:52i'm gonna sprint straight towards it
01:04:55i don't care anymore

01:05:16stop it
01:05:17stop it
01:05:47They only want me to finish the story.
01:05:52I know how, all the words are blurry, it's like my eyes won't uncross, but nothing is there, nothing is
01:06:12there, I know that, but that's all that they want, they just want me to finish the story.
01:06:21And I want to, I just, I don't know, I don't know if I'm ready.
01:06:41Be strong and courageous, do not be frightened and do not be dismayed.
01:07:08Be strong and courageous, do not be dismayed.
01:07:30I don't think it would be that bad to die in your sleep, no anticipation, no fear, just the end.
01:07:52Shit!
01:07:53I don't know.
01:07:54I don't know.
01:08:01Under that chest.
01:08:19Oh, my gosh.
01:08:50Who seeks good will find goodwill, but evil will come to him who searches for it.
01:09:10Oh, my gosh.
01:10:00I can't speak.
01:10:03Every time I do, I get close.
01:10:05I can't speak.
01:10:10I can't speak.
01:10:32I can't speak.
01:10:33I can't speak.
01:11:02I can't speak.
01:11:18I pray I'll die in my sleep tonight.
01:11:21Where are you?

01:12:38My mind is my own.
01:12:43just leave me alone here I was trying to write something dark but I wasn't
01:12:53embracing it but here it is I hope they'll be pleased my mind is my own my

01:16:41It was the first night I ever met him.
01:16:50He tried to ask me out, and after many failed attempts,
01:16:55he finally said,
01:16:59we live in a messed up world full of messed up people.
01:17:07So why take the chance and go through it alone?
01:17:16I said yes.
01:17:23I don't want to say it,
01:17:25but he's gone.
01:17:33He's gone.
01:17:37And I was here the whole time.
01:17:43But is too much silence a bad thing?
01:17:48Are the mundane relationships that we keep the only things weaving us to sanity?
01:17:55I don't know.

01:18:35As if I had a choice to make
01:18:41So I wait
01:18:46For days and days and days
01:18:51Drawing circles around my grave
01:18:56And still you never showed
01:19:01Where were you
01:19:03When the world was spinning you
01:19:08When the devil came grinning you
01:19:13What have you been up to?
01:19:26When the devil came to me
01:19:26When the devil came to me
01:19:26When the devil came to me
01:19:38So I died
01:19:42The way up in the sky
01:19:47Wanna give you a piece of my mind
01:19:53As I approached your throne
01:19:57Where were you
