00:00Have you ever wondered what happens to the ice after a hockey season ends?
00:03Because although it looks permanent, it's designed to be completely dismantled,
00:07starting by shutting down the cooling system buried beneath the rink,
00:10which has nearly 13 miles of pipes running through the concrete,
00:14all carrying coolant that keeps the ice frozen.
00:16And once those pipes are turned off, the ice immediately starts to melt from the bottom up.
00:20But to speed up the process, workers drive the Zamboni across the surface,
00:24releasing hot water that can reach temperatures of around 180 degrees Fahrenheit,
00:29allowing the staff to start removing every custom design frozen into the surface,
00:34from the embedded lines across the ice,
00:36to the home team's logo at the center being lifted out piece by piece.
00:39Then the ice is further broken up, so it's easier to be pushed with snow plows,
00:43sending all the slush into a hidden pit, where it's left to melt and drain,
00:47until eventually, all that's left is bare concrete,
00:49ready to be turned into whatever the arena needs next.
