During a prison transfer, Sam Gillen manages to escape while his accomplice is killed. Alone and hunted, he takes refuge in the woods where he meets Mookie, a boy with whom he quickly becomes friends. Mookie soon introduces him to his mother, Clydie, a young widow who lives with her two children and endures threats and intimidation from Franklin Hale, an unscrupulous developer who covets her land.
