00:03Thank you for supporting your PBS station.
00:07That's me, Fred the house cat.
00:09When my family leaves for the day,
00:11I don't just sit inside watching the world go by.
00:15I become...
00:19Nature Cat! Backyard Explorer extraordinaire!
00:24Tally-ho! Tally-ho!
00:27We're climbing out the trees now.
00:29We're swinging through the breeze now.
00:32We're getting muddy knees now.

00:38So what are we waiting for?
00:40We're so excited to explore
00:42All that nature has in store.
00:44Nature Cat! Go! Go! Tally-ho!
00:47Go! Go! Go! Tally-ho!
00:49We're the favorite nature guide.
00:51We just can't wait to get outside!
00:54We're going through the trees now.
00:55We're jumping in the leaves now.
00:57We're getting muddy knees now.
00:59We'll get our time!
01:01Tally-ho!
01:02Tally-ho!
01:03Tally-ho!
01:07Tally-ho!
01:07The Nature Nap Dilemma!
01:13Does everyone have their Nature Nap gear?
01:15I have my flower blanket.
01:17And here I have Smedley, my squishy-squashy soft elephant.
01:20I love you.
01:21And I have my dreamy-dream-dreaming hat, baby.
01:25It is filled with dreams to dreamily dream on.
01:28Looks like we're ready for our Nature Nap!
01:31To the hammock!
01:32To the hammock!
01:36Uh, where did the hammock go?
01:38It's gone!
01:39How can we very well have a Nature Nap without a hammock to nap upon?
01:51Whoa!
01:52I just had the strangest dream that we were napping in the dirt!
01:55We are napping in the dirt!
01:58And why exactly are we napping in the dirt?
02:00Because our hammock is missing.
02:02Well, that's not the only thing missing!
02:04Look!
02:06The tree that was holding our hammock is gone, too!
02:09Where did it go?
02:12Looks like someone cut it down!
02:14Hey!
02:15Look at the marks in the wood!
02:17What did they use to cut it?
02:19Look, if I'm gonna be doing this much thinking without a nap,
02:22I'm at least gonna need a snack, okay?
02:27Whoa!
02:28The teeth marks on Squeak's cheese look like the marks on the wood!
02:31Uh, someone cut down this tree using their teeth?
02:36That's what I was thinking.
02:38And by I, I do mean Daisy.
02:40Because she's a lot smarter than all of us.
02:43Ooh, a new use for teeth?
02:45Let's give it a try!
02:50Someone must have very sharp teeth to cut the tree down!
02:55Hey!
02:56The grass is all flat here!
02:58Someone must have dragged the tree this way!
03:00Come on!
03:08Water!
03:10When did this large pool of water get here?
03:13I don't remember a pool here either!
03:16Whoa!
03:16It looks like something's in the water!
03:18A fish, perhaps?
03:19Oh!
03:20Do you think that fish chopped down the tree with their teeth?
03:23Whoa!
03:27Slapping sounds familiar.
03:28What is that?
03:29What is that sound?
03:33I knew it!
03:35It's a beaver slapping its tail against the water!
03:37Hey, yeah!
03:39That's how beavers warn each other there's danger nearby!
03:42Look!
03:43T'was a beaver that cut down our hammock tree!
03:45It has our hammock too, too!
03:47But if we're going to take a nature nap, we're gonna need that hammock back!
03:53Tally-ho!
03:54No need to worry, beaver friends!
03:56I'm not dangerous!
03:58I just came for a hammock!
04:00So we can take our nature nap in peace!
04:11There!
04:12Now you're ready for our nature nap!
04:14Tally-ho!
04:20Mmm.
04:21No eating in the hammock, Squeaks.
04:23Excuse me, I'm not always eating, okay?
04:25Then what, pray tell, is making that crunchity-crunch-crunch sound?
04:30Ah, just a beaver gnawing on the tree.
04:33Oh-ho-ho!
04:33Just a beaver gnawing on the tree.
04:35Isn't that nice?
04:37Huh?
04:38Just a beaver gnawing on the tree!
04:41Oh!
04:43Whoa!
04:45Phew!
04:50Oh, no.
04:51Not again!
04:52Whoa!
04:53Whoa!
04:53Whoa!
04:59Excuse me, beaver friends.
05:01We are trying to take a nap here beside the marsh.
05:04Go ahead!
05:05We beavers won't bother you.
05:06Well, I'm afraid you are bothering us.
05:08You keep chomping down the tree our hammock is hanging in.
05:11Oh, so, so sorry about that, but we need the wood from the trees for our home.
05:17Wait, beavers live here?
05:19The water in this marsh is salty from ocean water.
05:22Um, spit take.
05:24I thought beavers only lived in fresh water.
05:26What is going on?
05:27Hmm.
05:28Friends, it seems our nature nap shall have to wait.
05:31For it is time for us to do a little nature investigation!
05:35Onward and yonward!
05:43Hey!
05:43The beavers are building one of those long wall-y things.
05:47Gosh, what are those things called again?
05:48It's a dam, Hal.
05:50It holds back the water.
05:52Oh, that must be why there's such a big pool here now.
05:55Uh, but what do they do when the tide is low?
05:57I mean, doesn't all the water flow away?
05:59They can't possibly live here.
06:01Absolutely, we can.
06:02Gah!
06:04Gah!
06:04I'm wet.
06:05I'm wet in the water.
06:07Gah!
06:08Gah!
06:10I'm so incredibly sorry about that.
06:13Allow me to introduce myself.
06:15The name's Barbara, and that's Paul.
06:18Nice to meet you, Barbara and Paul Beaver family, and welcome to the marsh!
06:23We just moved in.
06:24We used to live further upstream, but it was getting too crowded,
06:27so we moved down here by the marshy marsh.
06:29Wow, it really is a nice big place for a beaver to live in.
06:33Gorgeous views, room for family, original molding.
06:37Lots of mud!
06:39I love you, sweet, sweet mud!
06:41Mwah!
06:42Why, thank you, Hal, and welcome to the marsh.
06:46Thanks, but the marsh didn't always look like this.
06:49What did it look like, Barbara?
06:50Well, let me show you in a flashback, shall we?
06:57When we first got here, it was low tide and just a narrow little stream of water,
07:01but we like to live in more water than that.
07:04So we weavers chomped down these trees, added mud, and built this here dam.
07:09But it holds back more water now at low tide to make this pool, which we love.
07:15And you should see this place that I died.
07:18Oh, there's so much water you can't even see the dam!
07:20Oh!
07:21So some water still flows back and forth to the ocean.
07:25Yeah!
07:26Oh, hey, little baby salmon.
07:28It's me, Hal.
07:29Be honest, how do you like having beavers for neighbors?
07:31Love it!
07:32Before the beavers showed up at low tide, there wasn't enough water for us to stay.
07:37And the water would carry us toward the ocean where birds and bigger fish could eat us.
07:41Yike-a-rooty!
07:43But now the water is just deep enough so the birds can't find us,
07:46and we can grow bigger before it's time to head to the ocean.
07:50All thanks to the beavers.
07:52Yay, beavers!
07:54Yay, beavers!
07:55Yay, beavers!
07:56Oh, no!
07:57I don't want to alarm your beaverness, but your wally dammy thingy is brokeny!
08:01Don't you worry your pretty little head.
08:03We beavers have got it covered!
08:10There you go!
08:11All fixed!
08:12Yay!
08:13All gas!
08:14All fixed!
08:15I have to admit, you beavers really do amazing work!
08:19Thanks to you, we now have an even more beautiful spot to take a nap.
08:23I'm glad you enjoy it.
08:25Well, we'll see you later, then.
08:27Ha-ha!
08:28All right.
08:29Since their dam is all fixed, they won't be chopping down any more trees.
08:33Looks like we can finally nap in peace!
08:40This is the life.
08:54Nature Cat!
08:56Can't we just share the blanket, Daisy?
08:59Nature Cat!
08:59Look!
09:00Huh?
09:02Ah!
09:04Ah!
09:06Ah!
09:07Ah!
09:08Ah!
09:08Phew!
09:11Ah!
09:15Ah!
09:16Safe at last!
09:19Ah!
09:23Barbara, what are you beavers building now?
09:26Swimby swim, swim time!
09:29It's nap time, not swim time.
09:32Nature Cat, don't you want to see what else the beavers are working on?
09:38Uh, for nature, of course I do!
09:43Edward and beaver wave!
09:48Come on! Check out what we're building here!
09:51Oh, it's gorgeous! What is it?
09:55It's our beaver lodge!
09:57And it's our home!
09:59It's where we live!
10:00Whoa!
10:01And as you can see, the old lodgy lodge needs some fixing.
10:05Oh no, what happened?
10:07Well, the other night we had an unexpected visit from a bear!
10:11A bear?
10:13Oh yeah, it was a whole mess!
10:15Uh, let me tell you about it with another flashback.
10:20It was high tide, the perfect time for a splashing game of beaver tag!
10:25Ha ha ha!
10:26Yeah, you're it!
10:30Oh no, a bear!
10:32And he looks hungry!
10:34Oh come on, into the lodgy lodge everyone!
10:38It seemed that bear was really hungry for a beaver sandwich, so it tried to break into our lodge, don't
10:44you know?
10:45But no matter how much that bear pounded and pulled, it couldn't break in!
10:50Come on!
10:51Our lodge kept our whole beaver family safe!
10:55Hooray!
10:58Wow, you built your lodge so strong that a bear couldn't break it?
11:03Yes, indeedy-do!
11:04And we put the entrance under here so you have to swim in!
11:08Whaaat?
11:09That blows my mind, Barbara!
11:11Man oh man, you beavers are sweet engineers!
11:16What she and she said!
11:18Oh, that's so sweet of you!
11:20Our lodge is a nice safe place for us to eat and sleep!
11:23Speaking of sleep, Nature Cat, should we go find another tree to hang our hammock?
11:27I have an even better idea!
11:36Behold!
11:37Like a beaver, I have built us a new nature napping space!
11:41Who's ready for a nap?
11:45I guess cats aren't quite the engineers that beavers are!
11:49Don't you worry, Nature Cat!
11:51I know some friends who can help!
11:55Ah, beavers are the absolute best!
12:12Wild River Adventure!
12:17Here it is!
12:18The Wild River!
12:20Ooh, what makes it so wild, Daisy?
12:22The river just gets a flow where it wants to flow, you know?
12:25Oh, I know all about flow, you know, baby!
12:29Oh, that did not flow.
12:30See, I knew!
12:31It's protected like a national park!
12:33No one is allowed to build near it or change it with dams!
12:37Ah, it sure is beautiful!
12:39And so full!
12:41Well, it has rained a lot!
12:43Plus, the snow is melting in the mountains!
12:46All that water ends up in the river, too!
12:48The Wild River is the perfect spot for our wild picnic!
12:52Ooh, what makes it a wild picnic?
12:54Let's show him, Big Dog!
12:56Let the wild picnic begin!
13:01Bread!
13:02Cheddar cheese!
13:04Swiss cheese!
13:06Monster cheese!
13:08Dijon mustard!
13:11One triple decker cheese sandwich!
13:14Coming!
13:16I'm sorry, I had to eat it!
13:18Ooh, ooh, let me try!
13:20Let me!
13:20Time to get wild!
13:22Bread!
13:24Lettuce!
13:25Tomato!
13:26Veggie bacon!
13:28Mayonnaise!
13:30Uh, not quite how I planned!
13:33But!
13:34Still delicious!
13:35Ah!
13:36What was that?
13:37It was just me, good sir!
13:40I'm an oyster!
13:41The name is Elroy!
13:43Oh-ho!
13:44And where, pray tell, did you come from, little Elroy Oyster?
13:48The estuary with the rest of my oyster family, all attached together and happy as an oyster!
13:54Elroy, friend, don't you mean happy as a clam?
13:57No!
13:58I was even happier than a clam!
14:00Cause today we were celebrating my Uncle Netry's birthday!
14:05Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy!
14:07This is going to be the greatest oyster birthday ever!
14:11Suddenly, I was plucked off my rock!
14:15Ooh, I didn't know there would be birdie rides!
14:18And that nice birdie flew and flew!
14:22You know, I gotta tell you, I think he was giving me an extra special ride!
14:26I mean, he was gonna eat you for lunch, I think, no?
14:30What?
14:31No!
14:32Really?
14:33Well, Elroy, some birds do eat oysters!
14:36What happened next, little Elroy Oyster?
14:38Well, that nice birdie, who may or may have not wanted to eat me, dropped me.
14:45Whee!
14:48And then I landed on this furry gentleman's head.
14:50Yeah, hi, the name's Nature Cat!
14:52Hello, Nature Cat!
14:54Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to get back to the estuary to celebrate Uncle Netry's birthday!
15:01Yahoo!
15:02The estuary is at the mouth of the river, where the river ends and meets the ocean!
15:08Waterways are connected!
15:09Isn't that lovely?
15:10So tell me, where are we right now exactly?
15:13Hmm, let me check.
15:14We're here, next to the river.
15:17And the estuary is all the way down here, at the end of the river!
15:22Oh, uh, that is very far away.
15:26I'll never make it back to the estuary in time for Uncle Netry's birthday!
15:30Oh, yes, you will!
15:32How?
15:33With Captain Nature Cat's wild river adventure!
15:37That's how!
15:38Oh, boy!
15:39I'm going on a wild river adventure!
15:41Woo-hoo!
15:41Yeah!
15:42All right, all right!
15:47We're riding the wild river!
15:49Oh, it's so lush with so many kinds of plants.
15:52I love it!
15:53Yeah!
15:53The river can flow, and the plants and animals can grow, and my cell phone signal can go.
16:00You know.
16:00Oh, I know.
16:01You know about the flow and grow.
16:03You know.
16:04What did I just say?
16:05Ooh, I never get to see many animals when I'm in my oyster bed.
16:09Oh, yes!
16:11Nice one!
16:13And look!
16:15A black bear!
16:17Whoa!
16:18A mouse!
16:20Wow!
16:20A lot of animals enjoy living by this wild river!
16:25Wow!
16:26A lot of animals enjoy living by this wild river!
16:27Wow!
16:28This wild river sure is wild!
16:34Why are we moving faster?
16:36Maybe the water moves faster when the river gets narrower!
16:39It could also have something to do with those, um, roughest.
16:46This could get bumpy, everyone!
16:48Tally, hold on!
16:51Yeah!
16:53Whoa!
16:55Whoa!
16:55Whoa!
16:56Whoa!
16:58Whoa!
16:59Whoa!
17:00Whoa!
17:02Whoa!
17:06Whoa!
17:07Whoa!
17:08Hey!
17:08We're moving in the wrong direction!
17:10We're going backwards!
17:12Let's turn this raft around, nature crew!
17:15Huh!
17:15Whoa!
17:18Whoa!
17:19Whoa!
17:28Elroy?
17:29Where's Elroy?
17:30Wahoo!
17:32That wild river sure is wild!
17:36Look at all those tall rock formations!
17:39Wow!
17:40Well, maybe it's like how the Grand Canyon formed!
17:43This wild river wore down the rock over a long, long time and made this gorge!
17:48This gorge is gorgey and gorgeous, no, at the same time!
17:53Oh, little Elroy!
17:54You know that I know that you know that I know what you're saying, my brain just broke!
17:58Look!
17:59The water from the river is going over the banks out to the land!
18:02Oh, no!
18:03It looks like the river is flooding!
18:04We should do something!
18:06Like build up the banks really high to stop the flooding!
18:08Daisy, do you have any beavers on speed dial?
18:11It's okay, Hal!
18:12When the river floods, it can actually be a good thing!
18:15The land next to the river soaks the water up and keeps it from flooding the nearby town!
18:20And the water carries good stuff for the soil and that helps the plants!
18:25So, just to be clear, we don't do anything to stop the flooding!
18:29Not even a dam?
18:30No!
18:31A wild river shouldn't have dams!
18:33In fact, a dam could make the flooding worse!
18:36And that would be bad for plants and animals that live nearby!
18:39Hey, I think we're slowing down!
18:42Why are we slowing down?
18:44Daisy, I thought you said no one could build by this wild river!
18:47I thought so too!
18:48Who is he?
18:50He's a very handsome gentleman!
18:52Hello!
18:53And welcome to Captain Ronald's Wild River Gift Shop!
18:57Hello, Ronald!
18:59That's Captain Ronald, Nature Cat!
19:02Well, it's Captain Nature Cat, Captain Ronald!
19:06In that case, hello, Captain Nature Cat!
19:09Hello, Captain Ronald!
19:12Now tell me, why did you build a store right next to the riverbank?
19:16To sell Captain Ronald's Wild River souvenirs, of course!
19:20Care to buy a Captain Ronald's Wild River t-shirt?
19:23How about a Captain Ronald's Wild River water bottle?
19:26Or these cute Captain Ronald's Wild River jammy jams?
19:30No, thank you, Captain Ronald!
19:32Even though the jammy jams are very cute, we just want to keep traveling down the river!
19:37Well, I'm afraid that's gonna be a little difficult, Daisy!
19:40Oh, yeah? Why's that, Ronald?
19:42Cause Captain Ronald tamed the Wild River! That's why!
19:46Tamed it? But how, Captain Ronald?
19:48Ta-da!
19:50I built this dam all by myself, and now no one can miss my beautiful Wild River gift shop!
19:55But you can't dam a wild river! Why not?
19:59The last time I was on a river, there were dams everywhere!
20:02But this is a wild river!
20:04A wild river gets to flow freely!
20:07Why?
20:07Who put this dam here? I'm headed for the ocean!
20:10How am I gonna get there now?
20:13Fish can't go around the dam, so now they're stuck here!
20:17Oh! I didn't think about the fish.
20:19I was too busy thinking about selling.
20:21My Captain Ronald's Wild River baseball caps!
20:24And look! The river is flooding even more because of the dam!
20:29But wait, I thought flooding was good!
20:31Natural flooding of a wild river can be good,
20:34because it floods the area around the river that is used to flooding.
20:38But when you dam a river, the flooding can get much worse! Look!
20:42Oh, no! There's water in my burrow! There's never water in my burrow!
20:48Man, oh, man! The dam is flooding places it never would have if the river hadn't been changed!
20:53I didn't mean for that to happen.
20:55I just wanted to sell my Captain Ronald's Wild River keychains!
20:59And, Mr. Captain Ronald, because of your dam,
21:03I can't get back home to my estuary to celebrate my Uncle Nedry's oyster birthday!
21:09That's terrible!
21:10I need my Captain Ronald's Wild River hankies!
21:15So, what do you say, Captain Ronald?
21:18I say it's time to take out my Captain Ronald's Wild River sledgehammer!
21:23Woo-hoo!
21:29Hooray for Captain Ronald!
21:32Hooray for Captain Ronald!
21:35Onward and riverward!
21:38Tootle to the ooh, little oyster!
21:40Have fun at the birthday party!
21:41Thanks, Captain Ronald!
21:50Ah, we're slowing down again!
21:53I hope it's not another dam!
21:55It's not! We've reached the mouth of the river!
21:58Hello, mouth of the river! My name's Hal. I have a mouth, too! See?
22:05And just on the other side of this marsh is the ocean!
22:09Wow, it's so beautiful and green here, too! I love it!
22:13But the water is a little salty where the river and the ocean meet,
22:17so different kinds of plants grow here!
22:19Just think, if that wild river was dammed, this whole area might look a lot different!
