00:00I'm so excited. I'm going on a brand new adventure with Nina and the neurons.
00:04She's looking at new technology, so I'm wearing my cool gadget coat.
00:08Gadget coat? Brilliant! What does it do?
00:10Look at this. I've got here...
00:16...a pair of glasses that makes everything go dark.
00:19Erm, aren't they just sunglasses, Alex?
00:22What?
00:24Er, maybe let's leave the new technology to Nina and her experimenters. Ingo Digital.
00:30You try it.
00:37If you've got a question and you don't know where to go,
00:40ask Nina for some help, cos she's got a science show.
00:43She makes sense of her senses by helping all her fans
00:46by doing her experiments with potions and with bags.
00:49Touch her tongue.
00:51Fingers.
00:52Fingers.
00:52Eyes.
00:53Fingers.
00:54Notes.
00:55Nina and the neurons find out what you need to know.
00:58Nina and the neurons find out what you need to know.
01:01Luke, he helps us with our eyes and Felix with our touch.
01:04Ollie, snakes, our smells and sends some bells she hears so much.
01:07But as Ollie's brother, he helps us with our taste.
01:10Then Nina's little neurons and they're coming to your place.
01:13Touch her tongue.
01:15Fingers.
01:16Eyes.
01:17Fingers.
01:17Fingers.
01:18Notes.
01:19Nina and the neurons find out what you need to know.
01:22Yeah!
01:22Nina and the neurons find out what you need to know.
01:25Oh, yeah!
01:28Oh, hello there.
01:29I'm just doing a bit of vacuuming.
01:33With a vacuum cleaner that does it all by itself.
01:36Ha-ha!
01:37That's clever, isn't it?
01:40Oh, I hear a beep.
01:42I see a flash.
01:42I wonder what they're going to ask.
01:51Hi, Nina.
01:52Hi.
01:53We've got a question for you.
01:56What amazing things would we have in the future?
01:59That's a great question.
02:01What amazing things will we have in the future?
02:03I know there are some very exciting things that some very clever people are working on right
02:09now.
02:09So why don't you come down to my lab and we'll investigate.
02:12See you soon, Nina.
02:14Bye!
02:15Bye!
02:16Well, I'm going to need some help to answer this one and I know just who to ask.
02:20OK, neurons.
02:21Time to get to work.
02:41OK, today's question is what amazing things will we have in the future?
02:45Now, which neuron do you think will be most useful in helping us find the answer?
02:49Me!
02:50Me!
02:51Me!
02:51Me!
02:52Me!
02:52Me!
02:52Me!
02:53Me!
02:53Me!
02:53Me!
02:53Me!
02:55Me!
02:55The terms of maybe some sort
02:56But I can help so very much, if you need the sense of touch.
02:59Will it be?
03:00Musical bell?
03:01I send messages to Braine from ear.
03:03If there's a sound, I'll help you hear.
03:05Will it be lovely Luke?
03:07For looking and seeing, day or night, I'll help you with your sense of sight.
03:12Will it be?
03:13Awesome Ollie?
03:14If it's Polly or Withy but you can't tell, my messages help your sense of smell.
03:19Or will it be Babybud?
03:21Salty?
03:22Bit or sweet?
03:23I'm your taste buddy whenever you eat.
03:29It's all neurons.
03:31Go neurons, go neurons, go neurons, go neurons, go neurons, go neurons, go neurons, go neurons.
03:38All neurons, hip hop, have to help me.
03:42Today's question is what amazing things will we have in the future?
03:45And we're going to need help from all our neurons today.
03:48Right, I need to get the lab ready before the experimenters arrive.
03:54Liana loves reading animal books.
03:56Selma likes gymnastics.
03:58There are new things since my mum was young.
04:02Making new things is fun.
04:04But they both want to know what amazing things will we have in the future.
04:08So today, for one day only, Liana and Selma become the experimenters.
04:18Hi guys.
04:20Hi Nina.
04:21Welcome to my lab and thank you for your great question.
04:24What amazing things will we have in the future?
04:27To find out the answer, let's start by using our senses.
04:30Whoop whoo! A senses experiment.
04:33We're ready, Nina.
04:35Technology is changing really fast and it's making our lives easier and easier every day.
04:40But what will we have in the future?
04:42Sure. Well, I have a vacuum cleaner that drives itself, but how about a car that drives itself?
04:50Well, that's just silly. Cars can't drive themselves, Nina.
04:55Actually, Felix, people are working on them right now.
04:58But I think you guys need to find out more about driving cars by doing some driving yourselves in these
05:04mini cars.
05:06Off you go.
05:11That's it on you, Liana. Turn that wheel.
05:15Vroom, vroom. Good turn, experimenter.
05:19Watch out for the desk.
05:22Oh, beautifully turned.
05:25That's it. Go for it.
05:28Great driving experimenters.
05:30Now, when you were driving, you were doing lots of different things at once.
05:33So what were they?
05:34I turned the wheel and I looked around.
05:37I pushed the pedals.
05:38Yes, you had to turn the steering wheel.
05:41You had to use your feet to move the pedals.
05:43And you had to look around to make sure you didn't bump into anything.
05:47That's a lot of things to do at once.
05:50Driving is hard work, Nina.
05:52It can be, Felix.
05:53But what will cars be like in the future?
05:56We'll have a look at this.
05:58These cars can drive by themselves.
06:01The driver is still sitting behind the steering wheel,
06:04but she can read a newspaper because the car is driving itself.
06:09How does a car drive itself, Nina?
06:11Well, the car is actually being driven by a computer.
06:14The computer controls what the car does.
06:17Some very clever people have thought about all the different things you have to do to drive a car
06:22and they've found a way to make a computer do the same things.
06:27I think we need to go on a bus ride to find out more.
06:34Hmm, where do you think we're going today?
06:38Nina said we were going on a bus ride.
06:40I hope it's a double-decker and we sit in the top!
06:44I do hope there's not a big queue at the bus stop.
06:47I don't think we're going to a bus stop, Neurons.
06:49OK, experimenters, so far we've found out
06:52that driving involves doing lots of different things at once
06:55and driverless cars are actually controlled by a computer.
07:00So I've brought you here to see this little bus to find out more.
07:04Now, this shuttle bus takes people around this special place
07:08where lots of scientists work.
07:10But can you see a driver?
07:11No.
07:13No one there, Nina!
07:15That's because this shuttle bus actually drives by itself
07:18and as a special treat, I've arranged for us to have a ride on it.
07:22So come on, let's hop on board!
07:29We need to tell the computer which journey we want to take.
07:33So can you press the button for me, Selma?
07:37OK, here we go!
07:42This is amazing!
07:44And very quiet.
07:46It's not like a normal bus or car.
07:49And I can't smell any whiffy engine fumes either.
07:52That's because this shuttle bus doesn't have the same type of engine
07:56that most buses and cars have.
07:58It doesn't use petrol.
08:00It uses electricity from a big battery to make it move.
08:08We've arrived safely!
08:10Well done, shuttle bus!
08:11Could the bus drive us anywhere, Nina?
08:14That's a good question.
08:15Well, the computer that controls the shuttle bus
08:18only knows how to drive along certain journeys.
08:21A person taught at those journeys
08:23so now it can follow them on its own.
08:25In the future, if the computers in cars and vehicles like this
08:29are given enough information,
08:31they could go absolutely anywhere.
08:33So let's go back again!
08:45Oh, there's a parked car ahead!
08:48Oh, no!
08:49How will the shuttle bus spot the car?
08:52It can't see!
08:53Don't worry, Luke!
08:57Although the shuttle bus doesn't have eyes like we do,
09:00it still knows what's around it.
09:02When it senses something in front of it,
09:04but it can bump into the computer and the shuttle bus
09:07makes the shuttle bus stop safely.
09:13And off we go!
09:21That was fun, wasn't it?
09:23Yes!
09:24Now let me show you how this shuttle bus can see.
09:27So as we found out earlier,
09:29when people drive,
09:30they need to use their eyes to see where they're going
09:32and to watch out for things they could bump into.
09:35But vehicles that can drive by themselves,
09:37they don't have eyes like we do.
09:39Instead, they have special sensors like this
09:43that help them to see and work out where they are.
09:46How do the sensors work, Nina?
09:49Oh, let's go back to the lab to find out.
09:53All cars that can drive themselves have special sensors
09:56so they can sense what's around them.
09:59Let's do one final experiment to see how they work.
10:02The sensors on driverless cars send out a special kind of light
10:06which our eyes can't see.
10:07And when this light bumps into things,
10:10like the car that was in front of us earlier,
10:12something happens.
10:14So let's find out what.
10:15I just need to turn the lights down.
10:19I've got here a mirror and a torch.
10:25Now look.
10:26What's happened to the light?
10:28It bounced off the mirror, Nina.
10:31That's right.
10:32The light and the special light from the sensors
10:34on driverless cars bounces off things too.
10:37Like other cars, buildings, people.
10:41In fact, everything.
10:43And the light bounces back to the sensor.
10:47So if something is close to the sensor,
10:49then it bounces back quite quickly.
10:50But if it's further away, then it takes a bit longer.
10:53And that's how the car measures how far away things are.
10:57Let's do another experiment.
11:01We are going to pretend that this ball
11:03is the special light sent out by the sensors.
11:06And I want you guys to roll the special light down the road
11:09and we'll see how long it takes to bounce back.
11:12OK, Selma, why don't you go first, my dear?
11:15And watching.
11:18All the way back, all the way back.
11:20Brilliant.
11:21The special light bounced back.
11:23But it wasn't very quick, was it?
11:25No, Nina.
11:26No.
11:26OK, let's try it again.
11:27But this time, we'll see what happens
11:29if we put something in its way.
11:38So what happened?
11:39It bounced back quicker.
11:41Yes, the light didn't have as far to go
11:43before it bounced off the obstacle.
11:45So it bounced back much quicker.
11:47And this is just like the shuttle bus earlier.
11:51When something was in its path,
11:52the light bounced back to the sensor quicker.
11:55So it knew something was in its way.
11:56And the shuttle bus stopped.
11:59Some cars that are already on our roads
12:01use sensors to spot when something's too close to them.
12:04And they either stop or beep to warn the driver.
12:08Well, that could stop a lot of accidents, Nina.
12:11It could, Felix.
12:12In fact, cars that drive themselves
12:14could make driving much safer in the future.
12:22So your question was,
12:23what amazing things will we have in the future?
12:26And I think we've answered it.
12:27We discovered that clever people
12:29are making cars that can drive themselves.
12:32The cars are controlled by a computer
12:34that can do the different things
12:36that people do when they drive.
12:38The computer in the shuttle bus
12:40could only drive along certain journeys
12:43it had memorised.
12:44The computer senses where the vehicle is going
12:47by using sensors that bounce special light
12:51off things around it
12:52to measure how far away things are.
12:55If something is blocking the road ahead,
12:58the computer will sense it
13:00and stop the wheels really quickly.
13:03So I hope that's answered your question.
13:05Thanks, thanks, Nina. Bye.
13:08You're welcome. Bye.
