00:09Welcome to WatchMojo and today we're counting down our picks for the most dangerous and
00:15terrifying moments to have happened during a Louis Thoreau production that left all our
00:19hairs standing on end.
00:2432. The Realities of the Manosphere
00:39In his 2026 documentary, Thoreau investigated this toxic online subculture through a series
00:47of interviews with content creators who believe they are reclaiming masculinity, but in reality
00:53they are perpetuating dangerous sexist, homophobic and anti-Semitic beliefs to their audience.
01:0833. In one of the final scenes of the documentary, Thoreau's line of questioning proves that
01:18HS Tiki Toki, a Manosphere influencer, holds deeply hypocritical logic to be true.
01:30This moment reveals just how fragile the infrastructure of the Manosphere truly is, as even its fiercest
01:37proponents barely believe their own drivel.
01:5131. The Singing Audition
01:54Out of Thoreau's long stellar and dangerous career, this moment has been mentioned by him
01:59as one of his scariest. In Louis Thoreau's Weird Weekends episode Off Off Broadway,
02:11our champion documentarian meets prospective musical theatre actors. To get his head around
02:17the experience, Thoreau puts himself through an audition for a singing role on a Norwegian cruise ship.
02:23After getting lessons, he stands in front of judges and belts out the Beatles with A Little Help From My
02:29Friends.
02:3032. On top of the terror of public singing, one of the judges was Craig Revel Horwood of future Strictly
02:43Come Dancing fame.
02:4433. From My Friends With A Little Help From My Friends
02:52None of the judges looked impressed. In fact, one seemingly smirked as he thanked Thoreau, giving us second-hand embarrassments.
03:0333. The Hamilton's Arrest
03:1534. During the When Louis Met series, Thoreau met several people who left us reeling. More on those later.
03:29But meeting Neil and Christine Hamilton was a strange and eerie experience. During the filming,
03:35the political couple met Thoreau at a restaurant to explain something was going to happen.
03:48However, rather than state what it was, they alluded to it, making it seem really ominous.
03:54This mysterious event turned out to be assault accusations against the couple, which were later found to be false.
04:01Thoreau happened to be there by chance during this political scandal. Yet the couple's behaviour, such as Christine flirting with
04:08Thoreau,
04:09and Neil attempting to showcase a banner to a website during his statement, didn't help their side.
04:2429. At Gunpoint
04:27In the 2025 documentary, Louis Thoreau, The Settlers, Thoreau and his crew brought their cameras to the West Bank.
04:3430. At Gunpoint
04:45In this moment, he is interviewing the Palestinian activist, Mohamed Houraini, when suddenly he is forced to hide.
04:51Israeli soldiers drive over to the building they are posted in. It's there where Thoreau and the others have guns
05:03pointed at them.
05:04Tensions only die down when they inform them that members of the press are inside.
05:12It's one of the many times Louis' life may have been in danger.
05:1628. Louis Saves Joe
05:262016's Louis Thoreau, Drinking to Oblivion, showed the heartbreak of drinking dependency in the UK.
05:33One of those that left a deep impression on the audience was Joe Walker.
05:46The special episode bluntly showed the issues people can have with relapsing.
05:51In Walker's case, Thoreau had to help him to A&E in a dishevelled state.
05:56The seriousness of this situation caused him to hug Thoreau and sob.
06:01Yet, later on, Walker left to get vodka.
06:08Everyone expected the worst. Thankfully, by the end of the episode, he was sober and doing better.
06:14For at least 12 months, Walker kept this up.
06:19However, in 2020, he relapsed and needed funding for rehab.
06:24With Thoreau's aid, Walker got the money he needed to get help.
06:2827. Everything Rose McGowan went through
06:31So then he went to Venice, California, and met a man named David Berg, who is the founder of the
06:39Children of God.
06:40During the UK COVID-19 lockdown, Thoreau set up the podcast Grounded with Louis Thoreau, where he interviewed a host
06:47of celebrities.
06:48Yet, Rose McGowan's episode left a heartbreaking and terrifying feeling for those that listened.
07:02As well as discussing her upbringing in the Children of God cult, she also spoke about the assault from Harvey
07:09Weinstein.
07:10McGowan talked about the aftermath of escaping the Hollywood cult, who admired the disgraced film producer, leaving her ostracized from
07:19a community she once loved.
07:21The horror from the experience left a lasting impression on McGowan, so much so that she got a puppy to
07:27help with her PTSD.
07:28Yet, through all that devastation, her drive for justice is admirable.
07:3426. The Picket Line
07:39When people look at Thoreau's career, 2007's The Most Hated Family in America is seen as one of his best.
07:47Exploring the notorious Westboro Baptist Church and its hate speeches, Thoreau gave an interesting look at the Phelps family behind
07:56it.
07:56He even joined the group as they set up a picket line whilst holding bigoted placards.
08:07Yet, at one point, it got very serious.
08:10The car with a number plate hidden was caught on camera speeding away.
08:14Quickly, we see why.
08:16A person in the vehicle had loved a drink and struck one of the children, covering him in a substance.
08:21For a moment, the incident stripped away the hate from the church, as they showed concern for the upset boy.
08:2825. Meeting Max Clifford
08:33With the power of hindsight, the episode, When Louis Met Max Clifford, was filled with dodgy moments.
08:39At the time, Clifford was one of the most powerful celebrity publicists around.
08:44When Thoreau asked him about Clifford possibly having files on people he could threaten them with, he denied it.
08:50However, moments later, he admitted he would find something if he and Thoreau were feuding.
09:04Later on, the publicist took a call when driving Thoreau.
09:08During it, he told the person that Thoreau slept with Christine Hamilton.
09:15However, the documentarian pointed out that this was false.
09:19If Thoreau wasn't there, would this lie have tarnished his career?
09:24In 2014, Clifford was sentenced to eight years in jail for indecent assaults.
09:30He passed away there in 2017.
09:3424. Exotic Threats
09:39In 2011's Louis Thoreau, America's Most Dangerous Pets, the part-time rapper met with Joe Exotic.
09:51His strange handling of the animals was eyebrow-raising.
10:03Yet, when looking at the adult felines, Exotic coldly stated that, if Thoreau got in the cage,
10:10he would shoot him to put him out of the misery of being eaten.
10:15It was blunt and disturbing.
10:18After being sent down in 2019 for conspiracy to commit murder, Exotic was resentenced in 2022 to 21 years.
10:28In 2020, with the success of the Tiger King docuseries, Louis Thoreau shooting Joe Exotic was released.
10:35He looked at cut footage from 2011 and saw Exotic allude to speaking to a hitman
10:41and that either he or Carole Baskin was going down.
10:45You know, I've kicked that idea around.
10:48If I ever went broke, I think I would euthanise everything.
10:5423. The Boer Leader
10:56There's no great love among Boer people for the English.
11:01No, there's no great love, no.
11:04In his first BBC series, Louis Thoreau's Wild Weekend, the documentarian went to South Africa for the episode, Whites.
11:13This leads to Thoreau speaking to white supremacists in the country.
11:21Eventually finding his way to meeting Eugène Terre Blanche.
11:25Seen as the Boer leader, Terre Blanche was a white nationalist who wanted to put his race in power again
11:32in the country.
11:34After simply asking him if a non-white person, who has all the apparent criteria, Terre Blanche sees in a
11:40Boer person can be a Boer,
11:42he goes off on an aggressive rant.
11:51Eventually, Terre Blanche concedes that only white people can be Boer.
11:56But his rage doesn't dissipate, especially when Thoreau points out his tone.
12:08For a moment, we genuinely believed Terre Blanche could attack Thoreau.
12:1422. The Reluctant Bride
12:17For Louis Thoreau's Weird Weekend, the title star explored the murky world of buying companionship in the episode, Looking for
12:30Love.
12:30During it, we see Lake Palmer, who used a business to find a tie bride.
12:36From the beginning, he gives off several red flags as he's rude and belittles the staff helping him.
12:42When Thoreau catches up with Palmer later, we discover he has been matched with a woman.
12:47He gives off plenty of alarm bells, especially when he refers to her as a bargain.
12:59With a plastered-on smile, she does her best to avoid serious commitment statements.
13:04After one of Palmer's declarations of unending love, she carefully responded with,
13:09I understand.
13:19Reportedly, after failing to get a UK visa, the woman left Palmer.
13:2421. Talking to Violent Criminals
13:34Thoreau returned to South Africa for 2008's Law & Disorder in Johannesburg to explore the criminal and justice system.
13:43As a result, the episode is filled with scary moments.
13:47But one of the most was when he talked to two criminals on the street.
13:51Fresh from stealing four cars the night before, the duo detailed how they get money from people by
13:57graphically threatening their children or partners with weapons or an oven.
14:09It's not often you see Thoreau lost for words, but this was an understandable exception.
14:14Afterwards, he asked his guide whether they were joking.
14:18He explained that they were cruel and that one of the criminals, Malevyn, had a wanted photo in the newspaper.
14:25Malevyn's face was dead. They are wanted. His face was on the paper. But they don't care.
14:3520. Meeting the Pimp
14:37Louis has come across quite a few despicable characters over the years, and pimp Shedrick Smith definitely ranks among them.
14:44I was made to understand that you had been and perhaps still are a pimp.
14:50Yes, sir.
14:50Would that be correct?
14:51Well, half of it is. I was a pimp.
14:55Louis knows all the facts. This man was locked up for pimping out a 15-year-old girl.
15:01Many allege that he was aware of her age and also forced her into the occupation.
15:06In her account, she says there were times she was with you when she wanted to stop working,
15:13and you would pressure her and say you haven't made enough money yet.
15:22What's also terrifying is that this man seems utterly remorseless. He even goes as far as to justify his actions,
15:30listing out his twisted views on women.
15:43It's clear Louis is sickened by this man, but he continues to press him.
15:4719. Angry Wrestlers
15:55Some pro wrestlers are so devoted to the craft they will go to extreme lengths for the sake of kayfabe.
16:02Earlier in this episode, Louis asked Sarge a question which implied pro wrestling was fake.
16:08He took this personally. When Louis later attended one of his pro wrestling tryouts in the WCW powerplant, Sarge put
16:17him through hell.
16:25Louis is clearly being targeted here for his earlier comments, and is bullied by all the coaches.
16:31He's pushed to such extremes that he eventually ends up throwing up.
16:36It makes you wonder what they would have done to him had the cameras not been running.
16:4518. Behind Bars with Violent Inmates
16:55Louis visited Miami's notorious Maine jail, where alleged criminals are incarcerated while awaiting trial.
17:03Mixing among some of the most violent inmates, Louis delves into the unforgiving culture of the jail.
17:09Where the majority of time is spent in communal cells, the weak are preyed upon, and the fighting is constant.
17:15It's made clear to Louis that he wouldn't last five seconds, but he shows no fear and keeps asking those
17:21difficult questions.
17:27In one particularly spine-chilling moment, Louis meets a prisoner held in solitary confinement for stabbing another inmate.
17:35Previous subjects have been interviewed in crowded cells, but we know that this guy is dangerous as the bars stay
17:42firmly in place.
17:49Louis remains unfazed, but the sense of threat feels real.
17:5417. Captive Lions
17:56Louis's dark African hunting holiday raised a lot of questions about the ethics behind big-game hunting.
18:03But one thing that was not debatable, however, is what these creatures would do if they got a hold of
18:08Louis.
18:13When brought into a lion pen, Louis quizzes the breeder on how he feels about the creatures and whether it's
18:20right to slay them or not.
18:29Two things become apparent. The lions have their eyes on Louis, and that fence is not as sturdy as it
18:35looks.
18:36Louis is even reluctant to get close to them.
18:4216. The Pastor
18:44You can pick any moment from Louis' coverage of the Westboro Baptist Church, and it will send a chill down
18:50your spine.
18:51It's almost 18 months now, and the siege has got people eating their babies, and their small children, and each
19:00other.
19:00This moment in particular stands outwards, as Louis is finally able to meet Pastor Phelps after one of his sermons.
19:08Louis' questions are innocent enough, but it's clear that the Pastor is on the defensive the entire time, and has
19:14a disdain for the crew.
19:15If you had just a little knowledge of the Bible, you would know that what you just said is stupidity
19:21in spades.
19:23I don't know how to deal with a question like that.
19:25It's clear that he believes the words he is preaching, and truly believes that everyone outside the church is going
19:32to hell.
19:32An extremely eerie interaction with a terrifying individual.
19:4715. Weaponized Dogs
19:54The LA Stories documentaries are some of Louis' lesser known work, but they prove that the journalist doesn't need a
20:00big premise to make us nervous.
20:02In City of Dogs, he meets some men from Compton, who train pets as weapons against crime.
20:12After watching one of these weaponized canines at work, Louis agrees to let it have a go at him too.
20:19Is he scared? Yes, and he looks it.
20:27But never one to shrink from a challenge, he stays calm, stands his ground, and doesn't back out.
20:4014. Shots fired
20:43In a special all-about-crime in one of South Africa's biggest cities, 2008's Law & Disorder in Johannesburg still
20:51shocked us Brits regarding firearms.
20:53Theroux was taken to a building to watch private security groups aid the police in evicting people from a hijacked
21:00building.
21:01Yet, as soon as he arrived, shots rang out as they stormed the property.
21:12Bizarrely, the police seemed nonchalant about the experience, even when one person was repeatedly firing at others who were watching.
21:25Thankfully, the weapons were using rubber bullets, but still, it can do serious damage, and the users didn't seem to
21:32care who they were aiming for.
21:33This incident had so much tension that you could cut it with a knife.
21:38Lost people? How often?
21:42Two or three a month.
21:43Lose people?
21:44Lose people, yeah.
21:45What, get killed?
21:46In fights, yes.
21:4713. Louis enters the hijacked building
21:50But that wasn't the only nail-biting moment from Louis' trip to Johannesburg.
21:55Here, Louis was attended by local private security, but when they were reluctant to enter a hijacked building at night,
22:02Louis decided to do it anyway.
22:11Reckless? Maybe.
22:12And the hijackers weren't particularly frightening, as it turned out.
22:16But when he calmly walks up those dark stairs, you can't help but be impressed.
22:33It's no little known fact that a teen chimpanzee is an incredibly dangerous creature to be around, so what compels
22:41some people to keep them in their homes?
22:43Louis thought to explore this in his documentary, America's Most Dangerous Pets, when he visited a chimp owner.
22:50As soon as the creature is let loose, it's clear something is wrong.
22:57It charges directly at Louis and his crew, and smashes a window in an attempt to get to them.
23:04Louis is so shaken by the experience, that he and the team decide to leave.
23:22In 2010, Louis investigated the highly illegal, highly organized back streets of Lagos, Nigeria.
23:30Here, he would meet the feared union leader MC, who displayed his rather violent methods of controlling his people.
23:37In this instance, MC was seen handing out money to a large group of youths.
23:47His meaning behind this is not exactly clear to Louis, but his guide suggests it's a way to figure out
23:53who is in control.
23:54When the cash is handed out, the guide becomes very concerned for their safety.
23:59Louis is told they must leave immediately, as a riot is seconds away from breaking out.
24:05What?
24:05Are we not safe now?
24:07We are not safe, so it's better we live here.
24:09Okay.
24:0910.
24:10Huntington's Epidemic
24:11How old were you when you first got involved in a serious way with opiates?
24:16A serious way?
24:19When I was about 17.
24:21At number 10 on our list is one of Louis' most recent documentaries, and most saddening.
24:26In episode one of his Dark States series, he explores the community of Huntington, West Virginia, a city gripped by
24:34one of the worst substance abuse epidemics in American history.
24:49While exploring the community and meeting those addicted, Theroux quickly develops an understanding on how people's lives can become so
24:57dependent on substances, and how their usage of it can have devastating consequences for them and their loved ones.
25:04It's a difficult watch, and you can see the sadness in Theroux's eyes as he discovers just how substantial Huntington's
25:11problem really is.
25:12How are you doing?
25:14How are you doing?
25:15I'm alright.
25:15Give me just a second.
25:16Should we wait?
25:17Just for a minute.
25:18Okay, cool.
25:199.
25:20Fearing for his own life The next moment happened off camera, but it had to be included as it's
25:42a moment Theroux himself describes as one where he genuinely felt nervous and in fear for his life.
25:48While filming his Drinking to Oblivion documentary in 2016, Theroux and his team had to deal with two individuals who
25:55wouldn't take kindly to having their experiences with alcohol documented on camera.
26:00Theroux states that one of the individuals put him in a headlock that was so tight he actually thought his
26:06neck might snap, and that would be it.
26:08It's a moment that would have shocked viewers and made them feel all sorts of apprehension had the sequence been
26:14included in the final film.
26:28In a one-off episode, Louis Theroux travels to one of America's most notorious prisons, San Quentin, to meet inmates
26:36of the jail made up of serial killers, gang leaders, and some of America's most violent criminals.
26:42Theroux stayed for two weeks at the prison, and he learned a lot about the politics of prison life.
26:53One aspect of this is racial segregation, a political position so strictly enforced by the inmates that two white prisoners
27:01warn Theroux not to share food with any of the black prisoners, or risk being beaten up for doing so.
27:20Louis seems genuinely taken aback by such strong feelings, and the mealtime becomes even more chilling when the prisoners seem
27:28content with having such systems in place.
27:34Louis had encountered multiple experiences of racism in the past, but maybe none as profound as this next entry.
27:41Whilst filming a documentary covering the issues of racism in American society, Louis interviews and spends time with a number
27:48of neo-Nazis and white supremacists to try and understand why they hold the beliefs they do.
27:54One way in which he tries to achieve this is by attending a rally, where a large number of neo
28:00-Nazis gather.
28:07Whilst at the rally, Louis listens to deeply disturbing, racist speeches that fully vocalise the extreme ideologies this corner of
28:16American society subscribe to.
28:22It makes for very shocking and uncomfortable viewing.
28:34During his visit to the city of Philadelphia, Louis Theroux wanted to explore how the city's police force coexisted with
28:42the city's communities, and how serving police officers were asked to deal with crime on a regular basis.
28:54In one situation, the police make arrests in an African American community.
28:59Many residents feel the police are too forceful and aggressive in their approach, and tensions threaten to boil over into
29:06something more violent.
29:07And Theroux is there to witness the underlying racial tensions between these two aspects of Philadelphian society firsthand.
29:19It's a haunting reminder of how fractious relationships between law enforcement and the wider community remain a contemporary problem in
29:27American society.
29:42Louis Theroux has travelled to parts of the world where political, social, and cultural differences are clear to see.
29:49This documentary follows the continuing and expanding settlements of Israeli nationalists into the West Bank,
29:56an area with a largely Arabic population that Israel has controlled since the late 1960s,
30:02and an area which is recognised by international law as belonging to the state of Palestine.
30:13Because both Israel and Palestine claim that Jerusalem is their capital city,
30:18the continuing animosities between the two sides are clear to see when Louis witnesses tear gas being used in an
30:24East Jerusalem riot.
30:26It's clear from Theroux's facial expressions and manner that he is apprehensive as this deeply complex political problem escalates around
30:34him.
30:43In a feature-length documentary film, Louis Theroux decided to focus on the subject of Scientology,
30:49and the mysterious nature of the religious organization.
31:01The Church of Scientology had refused to cooperate with the making of Theroux's documentary,
31:07as he attempted to discover what the church really stands for and its place within American culture and society.
31:13Towards the end of the film, Theroux enters a road-closed area that is both eerie and unnerving.
31:29A woman and her cameraman inform Louis that he's trespassing and needs to leave.
31:35An unsettling standoff occurs when Theroux states he has a permit.
31:46The woman becomes more aggressive and volatile in her language, begging the question as to why she refuses to talk
31:53to Louis.
32:03In this next entry, Louis travels to Coalinga Mental Hospital, a medical facility in California
32:10that houses some of the state's most serious and serial sex offenders.
32:19Some patients and psychologists are very open about the past crimes of those at Coalinga.
32:25The documentary is uncomfortable viewing, and you can see Theroux grappling in a way
32:30as he tries to understand the patients and who they are, while at the same time remaining consciously aware
32:36of the crimes each of them has committed.
32:51In the early 2000s, Louis Theroux decided to move away from his Weird Weekends documentaries in the US,
32:57and focus on interviewing British celebrities at home.
33:01The first episode of his When Louis Met series was interviewing Jimmy Saville,
33:06a former television presenter and convicted offender.
33:09At the time the documentary was filmed, Saville hadn't been charged or convicted with any criminal charges,
33:15but rumours of his crimes were something Theroux was aware of.
33:28In the documentary, Theroux asks Saville about these allegations, which has met with an evasive response.
33:41In 2021, with countless victims having come forward and given evidence to Saville's history of abuse,
33:49looking back on this particular documentary leaves a chilling and terrifying feeling knowing who Saville really was.
33:561. Things Turn Hostile
33:59During his documentary covering white supremacists and neo-Nazis in California,
34:04Louis meets a family that is helping to organise a white supremacist rally.
34:09The family openly shows their beliefs, with Confederate flags and swastikas pinned and on open display in their garage.
34:25When Louis asks the question about if he was Jewish, would that be a problem, the atmosphere changes,
34:32and the neo-Nazis become increasingly hostile and ask numerous times whether he's Jewish or not.
34:38Theroux isn't Jewish, and remains defiant that he won't answer the question, as it shouldn't matter whether he's Jewish or
34:45not.
34:58Things get so intense that the family demands the documentary cease filming for a moment,
35:04a point where you genuinely fear for Louis's safety.
35:13Who do you think is the best British documentarian?
35:17Louis Theroux, Stacey Dooley, James Marsh, or someone else?
