00:00How resilient are European food systems amid climate change and global conflicts?
00:09Climate change, trade restrictions and global conflicts in recent years have shown how challenging it can be for food production
00:17and distribution to continue as normal.
00:20Yet some countries are showing how determined they are to produce and deliver food.
00:24Portugal leads the list with the most resilient food systems globally, followed by France and the UK, according to a
00:31new 60-country index from Economist Impact.
00:35The study analyzed countries across four pillars, the affordability of food, its availability, its quality and safety, and measures taken
00:43to respond to extreme weather events related to climate change.
00:47However, the report highlights that even the most resilient systems in the index do not score more than 80 out
00:54of 100, with Romania and Hungary found to be the least resilient EU countries.
01:00Only 15 countries produce 70% of the world's food, with France and Germany the only EU countries on the
01:07list.
01:07On the other hand, France, the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, Spain and Poland are among the top global food exporters.
01:15Resilient food systems are important because they make sure people can have access to a healthy, affordable diet.
01:22In Europe, the cost of a healthy diet is 2.42% of the mean GDP per head.
01:27This is one of the lowest worldwide.
