Super Mario is going to space.
Transcript
00:00There are several trends that are dominating the current cinematic landscape,
00:04with reboots and sequels being high on that list.
00:08Why go for an original new idea when you can ride the coattails of something that has already proven to
00:13be successful, right?
00:14For all the scepticism and stigma attached to such films, with many of them met with groans and sighs,
00:21sequels themselves aren't inherently a bad thing.
00:24As long as there's a story to tell and a reason to tell it beyond a shallow cash grab, of
00:28course.
00:28There are movies like this that audiences are waiting for, whether eagerly or not, and have been for some time.
00:35Then there are those that have garnered excitement immediately,
00:38having only just been announced within the last few weeks and months.
00:43I'm Ellie for WhatCulture and let's take a look at these huge movie sequels just announced.
00:48Starting with The Mitchells vs The Machines 2.
00:52Over the years, the catalogue of Sony Animation has been something of a hit and miss lottery.
00:57The lows have been emoji movie levels of low,
01:01while brighter spots have included the likes of Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs,
01:05Arthur Christmas and the Hotel Transylvania series.
01:08In particular, over recent years, there have been some truly smash hits,
01:12namely the Spider-Verse films, most recently K-pop Demon Hunters and The Mitchells vs The Machines in 2021.
01:19The latter, after being nominated for Best Animated Feature at the Oscars, now has a sequel to look forward to.
01:26It wasn't just the eye-catchingly beautiful animation style that helped the movie to stand out.
01:31It was a fun story powered by a stacked and talented cast,
01:34including the Mitchell family, played by Abby Jacobson, Danny McBride, Maya Rudolph and Mike Riander,
01:40who at least can be expected to return, hopefully, as well as the likes of Olivia Colman.
01:45Set to be written by the Molyneux sisters and directed by Guillermo Martinez and J.P. Sands,
01:50there is no word on when the sequel will release just yet.
01:54However, if other recent animated hits are anything to go by, it could be a while.
01:59With the time and effort needed to perfect such wonderful animation, this is a small price to pay.
02:04A Quiet Place Part 3
02:05In 2018, John Krasinski went completely against the type of projects that made him famous
02:11when he wrote, starred in and directed A Quiet Place.
02:15However, the film was a huge hit.
02:17The world saw Krasinski in a different light and one of the most successful horror franchises in recent memory was
02:23born.
02:23Now, seven years later, Krasinski took to social media to announce the trilogy making A Quiet Place Part 3.
02:30Originally set to release on the 9th of July, 2027,
02:33the outing has already been delayed by three weeks to avoid another film that I'll get to later on this
02:39list.
02:40It will be interesting to see where the third in the trilogy and the fourth Quiet Place movie overall will
02:46go.
02:46Arguably, the original movie was a self-contained story that needed no sequels or spin-offs,
02:51but still earned itself one of each.
02:53A Quiet Place Part 2 continued the story of the Abbots in what felt closer to an epilogue than a
02:58story of its own,
03:00while Day 1 has gone back to that first day and told the story of Samira and Eric in New
03:05York.
03:05Is there really anywhere else for the story to go?
03:07Though the prospect of Emily Blunt, Millicent Simmons, Noah Duke and of course Cillian Murphy potentially returning is exciting,
03:14it's hard to see where things can go that won't be retreading old steps.
03:18Gremlins 3
03:19Iconic 80s movies will always have that golden glow of nostalgia that seemingly pulls studios towards the idea of remakes
03:27and reboots.
03:28It was reported in early 2025 that a long-awaited Goonies sequel would be going into production,
03:34but this is far from the only one.
03:36More recently, it has been announced that Amblin Entertainment and thus Steven Spielberg will also be involved in an upcoming
03:42Gremlins 3.
03:43The original film came out in 1984 with a follow-up six years later,
03:47and now a trilogy will be completed in 2027 after a wait of almost four more decades.
03:53Of course, at this stage, details are limited at best, though aside from Spielberg, there are some names confirmed to
04:00be attached.
04:01The film will be written by Final Destination Bloodlines directors Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein,
04:07and quite excitingly, will be directed by Chris Columbus, who wrote the original and is coming off the back of
04:13working with Amblin for Netflix's Thursday Murder Club adaptation.
04:16Coming so long after Gremlins 2, the new batch, it's impossible to tell which, if any, original cast members will
04:23return,
04:23or if a whole new generation of characters will be subjected to the mischief of the titular creatures.
04:28But it's fair to say it could be either, with a decent chance of it being a little bit of
04:32both.
04:33Screenboat 2, nothing stays dead.
04:35All it takes is one movie and one idea to kickstart a new trend that can take over a whole
04:40genre of film.
04:41And this is what happened when Winnie the Pooh Blood and Honey took a beloved children's character recently entered into
04:47the public domain
04:48and threw them into a gory horror flick.
04:50Since then, Blood and Honey has seen a sequel and kicked off the Twisted Childhood universe,
04:55which has and will include other gruesome stories around the likes of Peter Pan, Bambi, and of course, with an
05:02Avengers-style crossover to boot.
05:04Outside of the TCU, there has been Screenboat, a similar take on Mickey Mouse's Steamboat Willie, which has also entered
05:12the public domain.
05:13Willie, played by the same man who has brought to life Art the Clown in the Terrifier franchise, David Howard
05:18Thornton,
05:19will return in Screenboat 2, Nothing Stays Dead.
05:23Alongside Mickey Mouse's iconic character will be Minnie Mouse, as the first movie's cliffhanger will seemingly be paid off.
05:30There is clearly a real market for these kinds of adaptations, so don't rule out a trilogy in the near
05:34future,
05:35particularly with more Mickey Mouse stories, including Pluto's first appearance, set to hit the public domain next year.
05:42The Mummy 4
05:43There are some movie franchises that have seemed so dead in the water for so long that all hope of
05:48ever seeing them return is all but gone,
05:50often for decades at this point.
05:51However, the movie industry has proven nothing to be true quite so much as you should never say never.
05:58Even with the re-emergence of Brendan Fraser as a star in Hollywood,
06:02no one would have had a fourth Mummy movie announcement on their 2025 bingo card.
06:07And yet here we are!
06:08Set to be directed by the team behind 2022 Scream revival, Matt Battinelli-Ulpin and Tyler Gillette,
06:15Fraser will return to the role of Rick O'Connell after over two decades.
06:19All in all, a hugely exciting update, though arguably the biggest news comes in the form of Rachel Weisz's involvement.
06:26She appeared in both The Mummy and The Mummy Returns, but famously skipped the threequel The Mummy Tomb of the
06:32Dragon Emperor
06:33and was replaced by Maria Bello.
06:35Her return is a welcome one, and that goes for the franchise as a whole,
06:39particularly after the unmitigated failure that was Universal's Mummy reboot attempt in 2017 with Tom Cruise at the helm.
06:46Fraser himself knows that fun is one of the key ingredients to this film and this franchise,
06:51and so hopefully audiences will be in for a real treat.
06:55Godzilla Minus Zero
06:56It would typically be unthinkable for a film released almost 70 years after the original
07:02to be considered one of the best in the franchise, if not the very best.
07:06But that is exactly what Godzilla Minus One achieved in 2023.
07:10Everything about it was excellent, from Godzilla itself to the human element that often falls by the wayside in such
07:15monster movies.
07:16The action, the score, the story, and the Academy Award winning visual effects.
07:21It had everything, even including a delicious tease that the king of the monsters wasn't actually killed in the final
07:27moments.
07:28Godzilla's healing ability clearly showed that it had more to offer,
07:31and thankfully, that is now confirmed with the announcement of Godzilla Minus Zero,
07:36also to be helmed by the returning Takashi Yamazaki in the director's chair.
07:41After such success on a reportedly small budget of $15 million,
07:44it's likely that this figure will go way up for the sequel after a huge $113 million global box office
07:51intake.
07:52Whether or not the cast will be returning, which is entirely possible as their mission to lose no lives to
07:57Godzilla was successful,
07:58this potential bump in budget may lead to another kaiju or two stepping into the ring.
08:04I mean, who isn't ready to see Mothra or King Ghidorah set foot wing or triple head into this universe?
08:10The Super Mario Galaxy Movie
08:11Though there were moans and groans at the first released footage of the Super Mario Brothers movie,
08:17not least thanks to the Brooklyn drool given to the main character by Chris Pratt,
08:21the film went on to be mind-bogglingly successful.
08:24It crossed the billion dollar mark with ease, and a sequel was a no-brainer.
08:28Back in 2024, it was announced that there would be another Super Mario movie coming,
08:33though technically, there was no confirmation of this being a sequel.
08:37Until now.
08:38With a backlog of games and other media stretching back to 1981 to pull inspiration from,
08:44Nintendo is sending Mario and co. to space in 2026.
08:48The Super Mario Galaxy Movie will adapt the Wii game from 2007,
08:53though how loosely or faithfully remains to be seen.
08:56It could be that the only thing the film has in common with the game is the outer space setting,
09:00and then of course there is the question of how exactly the original's post-credit scene of Yoshi
09:05will be paid off.
09:06With a surprisingly close release date of April 2026,
09:10it is somewhat comforting that Keegan-Michael Key, who will be reprising his role as Toad,
09:14alongside Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day and Jack Black have already finished their work.
09:19A Minecraft movie too.
09:21When studios begin considering a sequel,
09:23it is never so much the actual quality or critical response to the film that is looked at,
09:28but more the box office figures.
09:29Money talks after all, which is why a second Minecraft movie was all but inevitable.
09:34The first film itself was subject to a lot of questionable creative decisions,
09:38but based around a hugely popular source material,
09:41it struck a chord with the right audience and brought in a whopping $957 million worldwide.
09:48No plot or cast details are confirmed as of yet for the sequel,
09:52though it would not be too surprising to see the likes of Jack Black, Jason Momoa and Danielle Brooks return.
09:57However, expanding on such a huge potential world could lead to the story moving away from the original.
10:03It really is anybody's guess at the moment.
10:06As said, the financial success of a Minecraft movie was always likely to result in a sequel,
10:10but with it set to release on the 23rd of July 2027,
10:14the second outing will be part of something of a new Barbenheimer situation,
10:18with a sequel that was a little more surprising when it was announced.
10:22Which leads me to...
10:23The Simpsons Movie 2.
10:25These days, a wait of 20 years for a sequel is far from unheard of,
10:28and it isn't even close to some of the gaps other franchises have seen between films.
10:32Even so, the confirmation of a second Simpsons movie is something that nobody could have predicted.
10:37Way back in 2007, Fox brought Springfield's favourite family to the big screen,
10:42and it was a wild success.
10:44So constant was the demand for a sequel that Futurama even made a joke about it
10:49where Matt Groening shot Bender when he asked about it at an intergalactic comic con.
10:53Yet here we are.
10:54The Simpsons may not have been good for a long, long, long time now.
10:58In fact, it was well past its prime when the first film released.
11:01But that doesn't mean fans of the show and mainstream audiences won't get excited.
11:07The first movie was far better than the weekly episodes the series was putting out at the time,
11:11as it released between seasons 18 and 19.
11:14So why shouldn't the second also be solid?
11:17Though it won't be the official end of The Simpsons,
11:19as its season 40 renewal will take it past 2027,
11:23it's hard not to imagine Disney choosing now to provide a sequel because it is their last chance.
11:29And for those with no interest in watching the show on a regular basis anymore,
11:32this will likely be a final goodbye.
11:35And finally, Man of Tomorrow.
11:37Particularly when you consider the mess that he inherited,
11:40James Gunn has made a strong start for his flawed but fun new DCU.
11:45Creature Commandos was fine, and Peacemaker has been a huge hit,
11:48though the second season couldn't quite live up to the first.
11:51But the crown jewel is, of course, Superman.
11:54Introducing a new Clark Kent,
11:56particularly so soon after Henry Cavill's return was teased and ultimately killed,
12:00was never going to be easy.
12:01However, Gunn managed to produce one of the best Superman films of all time,
12:06with the inspired casting of both Kal-El and Lex Luthor certainly helping.
12:10Of course, then, the excitement at the freshly announced sequel, Man of Tomorrow,
12:14is understandable,
12:15as it will not only see both David Corrin-Sweat and Nicholas Holt return,
12:19but will also force them to team up in what promises to be
12:22a fun, dynamic and dynamite continuation of Soup's story.
12:26The DCU is really starting to pick up the pace now,
12:30with Supergirl, Clayface and The Lantern series
12:33all set to release before Man of Tomorrow hits cinemas
12:36in what is an already stacked 2027 slate.
