Kazakhstan: Largest country in Central Asia approves new constitution

Citizens of Kazakhstan voted for a new constitution. According to preliminary results turnout was over 70% and 90% of votes supported the constitution. The new basic document expands presidential power, introduces post of vice-president and reforms the parliament.

00:00According to the preliminary results issued by the Central Electoral Commission of Kazakhstan,
00:05the proposal of the new constitution of the country got an overwhelming support of the citizens in Sunday's referendum.
00:12The turnout was above 70% and of the people who voted, around 90% said yes to the new
00:18constitution.
00:19As the results were pouring in, President Kasim-Zhomart Tokayev addressed the denation.
00:46The new constitution expands the authority of the President, reintroduces the position of the Vice President,
00:52and reforms the Parliament, which will have a single chamber instead of current two.
00:57It also expands the scope of freedom of speech to include scientific, technical and artistic creativity.
01:03After the constitution is inaugurated, the country will head to the parliamentary elections.
