00:00i want to open this list by saying that over at triculture we are blessed to have a lot of
00:05wonderful voices contributing to all of our articles all of our videos all of our thoughts
00:11the thing is we are not always going to agree on everything sometimes we sit down in a room
00:18and we can all go yep this is exactly how things should be and everything is fine and other times
00:23somebody will make a suggestion and they will be laughed into oblivion as the prophets willed it
00:29this article was originally written by marcus fry who is a wonderful wonderful person and because
00:34i'm going to disagree with almost every one of their points i think what you should do is head
00:39over to our website whatculture.com and check out the original article so that you can see what
00:44marcus thought compare it to what i thought and then we can have some sort of jousting competition
00:50with that big lovely intro out of the way let's get down to it here is every hero ship ranked
00:57worst
00:57to best number 10 la sirena before y'all think i'm a hater bear with me the ss la sirena
01:06is an
01:06unregistered kaplan f-17 freighter that cristobal rios acquired after leaving starfleet now in picard
01:14jean-luc needed a fast dependable ship to get to where he was going and thanks to raffi knowing rios
01:21that was perfect they sorted him out with la sirena the reason la sirena scores so low on this list
01:27is that not because there's anything particularly wrong with the ship although the irish hologram
01:34does have me asking questions it's because when compared to the others on this list it just doesn't
01:40really stack up it definitely does the job and it definitely is agile it's got some fairly nifty
01:46weaponry i love their transporter and the fact that it's the size of half a cargo bay but for me
01:53it just doesn't hold up next to ships like defiant like the enterprise pecan enterprise or like some
02:02of the newer ships as well so for me it's a lovely lovely freighter it's quick it's cool i really
02:09do
02:09despite what i just said about the irish hologram enjoy the ship wide hollow emitters
02:15but it has to kick off our list today number nine the enterprise nx01 now i can hear our happy
02:23working
02:23relationship with dog drexler just vanishing into the distance but my reason for putting the nx01 so
02:31low is it's nothing to do with aesthetics it's nothing to do with well we love enterprise here so it's
02:38certainly nothing to do with that it's that when compared to the other ships on this list this one
02:44was a wonderful prototype sure and this one was a great one for getting the ball rolling but again
02:52it just doesn't stack up so much next to the rest so let me go through it so being set
02:56the 22nd century
02:57gave the writers of enterprise a unique opportunity to explore the origins of starfleet the federation as
03:02well as their tech the enterprise nx01 was great in this regard we got to see earlier forms of many
03:08of the iconic devices used aboard every starfleet ship in the original series of beyond instead of
03:12tractor beams they used physical grappling hooks instead of shields they polarized hole plating
03:17instead of photon torpedoes they just chucked rocks out the window all right not quite they were equipped
03:22with spatial torpedoes which have a lower explosive yield and range additionally the transporter was a
03:27new invention and you get to see that develop over the four seasons now altogether the nx01 gave us
03:33great insight into the evolution of starfleet tech but for us it's hampered by its very purpose
03:42its purpose was to be an earlier version of starfleet and for that it does an absolutely brilliant job
03:49but again when you compare it to us on this list we love it enterprise we love you doug in
03:56the words of
03:57uh paramount to garrett wong someone's got to be the ensign number eight the uss enterprise
04:031701 now if anyone's still listening to this list i i i appreciate you and thank you very much
04:10the enterprise 1701 is the pinnacle of starship design in the 1960s it was crucial for introducing
04:18a new aesthetic a new sleek a new mature if you like version of space travel when it comes to
04:26at the
04:27time relatively mid-budget sci-fi now while star trek was never invented as a b-movie you know bug
04:34-eyed
04:34monster of the week sort of show it was beautifully steeped in that kind of history while still forging
04:41ahead with its own the way the nacelles sit behind the saucer section and the star drive section below
04:46is now one of the most recognizable designs in all of literature matt jeffries did a wonderful
04:53wonderful ship design for this new series now the only reason it scores as lowly as this is because
05:02amazing as it is it set the template for things to come afterwards so it was when you are given
05:09a
05:09wonderful prototype you have only to build and improve there is no denying whatsoever that the
05:17original enterprise is a beautiful ship and for me personally aesthetically my favorite enterprise is
05:25the refit 1701 and 1701a from the movies so it is not that i personally think this one doesn't look
05:33great because it does it is the forebear for everything that came after it is a fantastic design
05:40and it is a very loved eighth entry on this list number seven uss discovery the crossfield class uss
05:49discovery was based on the original designs for what would become the refit 1701 for the motion
05:56picture you can see that in the nacelles that jut out from the triangular star drive section with that
06:02smaller circular saucer section sitting above it the discovery raised some eyebrows when it was first seen
06:08in the teaser trailer for starter discovery the nacelles at the time were much shorter and it much
06:14more closely resembled that original design when it was finally revealed in episode three of starter
06:21discovery's first season those nacelles had taken rather a lot of viagra and had become about half a
06:26football field long and yet any issues that were presented in the initial season of starter discovery
06:34have long since been rectified the discovery and indeed the discovery a have very much earned their position
06:42in the starfleet pantheon of beautiful ship designs unusual sure but beautiful the interior of the ship
06:50while sometimes a little bit cold has warmed over the four seasons particularly into the fourth season
06:57where we start to spend more time in crew quarters particularly saru and burnham the bridge is a
07:03fantastic design it was a somewhat interesting choice that they decided to add what was effectively the
07:08entire interior of space dock during the third season finale fight in the turbolift however that has
07:15since been addressed and fixed the design features of course the spore drive which caused headaches for
07:20fans in seasons one and two of started discovery but now that it's been flung into the far future is
07:25absolutely fine and it is now a very very cool piece of technology it allows discovery to visit
07:31anywhere they want in the galaxy you know i think it brings them up to about two light years before
07:36the galactic barrier almost like that was a plot point in season four a having earned its place in
07:41starfleet history at this stage discovery is a strong strong vessel one that took an absolute pounding
07:49against control and yet still manages to hold its own up against the 1701 hats off discovery kudos
07:56number six uss protostar now the protostar is an advanced strong fast little ship star trek prodigy is
08:04impressing younger and existing audiences of star trek by introducing the proto drive via this ship the ship
08:13itself is a beautifully sleek design that evokes both memories of the dauntless voyager and some of
08:19the kelvin universe vessels as well armed with finally a replicator for support ships which would
08:26explain so much of how voyager managed to hang on to all of those shuttles this ship has managed to
08:30hold its own against the diviner and against other ships around the delta quadrant it managed to help
08:36its crew escape to another quadrant while being chased although they did have to turn straight around
08:40after that and for further details watch prodigy the recent trailer that was released for prodigy's
08:45second part of its first season showed its size up against the new dauntless class which really hammered
08:51home that the protostar is generally a test vessel or support vessel as it's roughly the size of several
08:59runabouts placed back to back the dauntless dwarfs it now it's not about size it's about use and the protostar
09:06so far has proven a very effective very covetable ship and one that we are very very much enjoying
09:14watching its journey number five the uss defiant and the sao paulo the defiant class ship which was
09:20introduced in the beginning of ds9's third season was a complete departure from everything that we've
09:25seen before in terms of starfleet vessels it was equipped with a cloaking device thank you very much
09:31romulans and also featured a blockier stockier design it was starfleet's first warship now this
09:39went completely against what gene roddenberry wanted for star trek back in the 1960s and yet times had
09:45changed therefore the need for the ships in star trek changed with it you can almost hear the twitter
09:52users running to say not my star trek and gene would be spinning in his grave but think about how
09:59enduring the defiant was it survived so many battles with the dominion it survived a battle with the
10:05borg it survived many many tussles with the kardassians as well as other various ships looking at you
10:13klingon fleet it finally met its end in the second battle of chintaka in the seventh season of start to
10:19deep space nine now although it went out firing it was disappointing and saddening to see that the
10:26breen's energy dissipating weapon was able to take down one of our favorite ships which of course
10:32was the point as a shot revealed all of the other ships behind it you see galaxy class vessels as
10:37well to go even if the enterprise d was there in that fight not like that would have done much
10:42better
10:42the defiant did fantastically for the three and a half years that it served before it was destroyed
10:46and the sao paulo although we didn't get very much to see seemed to do quite well in what you
10:52leave
10:52behind as well number four the uss enterprise ncc 1701 e introduced in star trek first contact the
11:00sovereign class uss enterprise e is easily one of the most beautiful ships on this list the sleek design
11:08accentuated by the fact the saucer section goes straight into the star drive section without a neck
11:14to target shows that the enterprise e is a follow-on in a way from the defiant with the enterprise
11:20d having
11:20been destroyed in orbit of iridian 3 in the previous film it was known that we needed an enterprise that
11:26could stand up to more of a direct assault and the enterprise e's design accentuates this john eaves
11:33worked very very closely with the producers to come up with something that would show it was still a
11:39ship of exploration but one that had teeth now it was tested early in star trek first contact with
11:44the battle of sector zero zero one leading directly into the fight against the sphere and then it was
11:49almost completely assimilated over the course of the film and yet still bounced back for star trek
11:55insurrection and star trek nemesis in both of those films the ship took a pounding as well so the ship's
12:01strength is not in question the ship's comfort is also not in question as it was shown across all three
12:07films just how much there were creature comforts everywhere didn't you see the mentakin tapestry on the
12:13back of picard's chair god i love who watches the watches the enterprise e remains one of the most
12:19instantly recognizable ships in all of star trek as well as one of the most fist pumping arrivals in
12:25all of star trek it appears in what is for many one of the best star trek films and it
12:31also appears
12:31in what is for many one of the worst star trek films so i'm not going to name them you
12:35decide with
12:36the close-up on the deflector dish the nacelles that got pushed back between starter first contact
12:41and star trek insurrection and the front of the saucer section which was completely schmuddled and then
12:46rebuilt at the end of nemesis this is a strong beautiful elegant ship that i'm kind of considering
12:53asking out on a date number three the uss cerritos the california class cerritos was a bit of an eyeful
13:00when it first appeared in that teaser poster a few years ago it was very clearly inspired by ships like
13:06the galaxy class and ambassador class with the circular saucer section and then their relative lack
13:12of star drive section was a bit like wait a minute i thought this was starfleet however it perfectly
13:18encapsulates the purpose of the ship which is the cali class ships are the workhorse of starfleet
13:25they get sent in to do the dirty work that the other ships don't want to do and in that
13:29respect
13:30it is perfectly fit for design now we've seen in recent episodes just how many mazes of wiring and
13:37jeffrey's tubes and hydroponics bays and duploskeletons are sitting on the cerritos it is
13:42quite a bit larger than perhaps we first thought when we first saw it and it does exactly what it
13:48says in the tin you go in and make first contact and make friends and everything's great and you
13:53warp off and then the cerritos comes in to usually mop up the damage it had its entire outer hull
13:58stripped
13:58away at the end of the second season and was absolutely fine it saved much larger ships like the
14:04archimedes it has always been there to get the job done and has still managed to take a complete and
14:11utter kicking from the packlets on several occasions the cerritos is to the cali class what the enterprise
14:18is to whatever class of ship the enterprise is that week it is truly one of the stars of starfleet
14:25now while it might not shine as bright as a galaxy or sovereign class it is still out there keeping
14:31the
14:31light going number two uss voyager the intrepid class voyager was introduced in caretaker the
14:37opening episode to this new series voyager featured a new design it was an oblong saucer section a star
14:45drive section that was attached directly to it and moving nacelles the nacelles would rise up when the
14:50ship was going to warp as this was shown to make a more effective warp drive the ship was able
14:56to land
14:56with the struts that were revealed in the 37s which became the first episode of season two of star trek
15:03voyager the one criticism that voyager often gets is that the premise for the show which was the
15:09conflict between the federation officers and the maquis officers and the fact that voyager was stuck so
15:14far away from a space dock is what keeps this from the top spot the ship was a little too
15:19clean so
15:21although it was fantastic and it lasted and it faced against the krenum and it faced against the borg and
15:27the kazon and and and and and it always looked like it had just been rolled off the showroom floor
15:34now that is a minor gripe on my part because i love this design the deflector dish the shuttle bay
15:41with
15:41the revolving door of shuttles that just never seemed to run out which we addressed in our protostar entry
15:47and the fact that when we know it got home it became a museum just goes to show how enduring
15:53voyager
15:54was now the design was used once on deep space 9 to stand in for the bellerophon although it would
16:00have been lovely to see it in some of the movies because it is such a well-designed ship the
16:05bioneural
16:06gel packs that became effectively the nervous system for the computer core were an interesting idea that
16:11were never really followed up on there were many ideas introduced in this ship that should have
16:16gone on to become mainstays across the board it features in my humble opinion the most beautiful
16:23engineering set of any of the hero ships and also i kind of love the bridge the most as well
16:30number one the uss enterprise ncc 1701 d 1987 saw the introduction of the galaxy class enterprise d
16:39designed by andrew probert this would feature a much larger design than the enterprise we had seen before
16:44because this was not only a ship of exploration but it was also effectively a ship of diplomacy a ship
16:50of colonization a ship of conferences it needed the space it was a chunker of a ship it was different
16:57from what came before in that the nace cells were much smaller when compared to the dimensions of the
17:03constitution class it was able to face off against ships like the borg cube it was able to face off
17:09against
17:09kardassian klingon romulan vessels but all that time the enterprise d was never a ship of war it was
17:16always a ship of exploration the brightly lit corridors the slower pace of life on board and of course the
17:24large horseshoe tactical station that surrounded the command chairs on board the bridge all led to this
17:30being the most iconic design when it comes to starfleet vessels and it seems to be the one that newer
17:37ships
17:38tend to base their at least initial designs from the enterprise d went before her time over viridian 3
17:46she was a victim of the film industry rather than anything else because the sets were designed for
17:53television screens at a 4 3 ratio not the widescreen format of cinema the ship was shown in several
18:00versions throughout its run we had of course the version that we saw in yesterday's enterprise which
18:05showed a bridge that would serve as the inspiration for the bridge on star trek generations and also the
18:10three nacelled version that rocked up in all good things the enterprise d in the galaxy glass remains
18:15one of the most endearing designs ever shown in star trek it is a personal warmth when i see this
18:22ship
18:22is i know exactly that i'm home thank you very much everyone for listening to this list thank you
