00:01On this day in space. On March 15th, 1806, a meteorite fell from the sky near the town of
00:07Alaïs, France. Known as the Alaïs meteorite, this was the first object from space in which
00:11scientists discovered organic chemicals. The space rock was classified as a group C.I. carbonaceous
00:17chondrite and is the oldest known meteorite of its kind. Carbonaceous chondrites are extremely
00:22rare. They account for less than 5% of all meteorites discovered on Earth. Their chemical
00:28composition resembles the chemistry of the sun more closely than any other kind of meteorite,
00:32so they're considered the most primitive type of space rock. A Swedish chemist named
00:36Johns Jacob Brazilius analyzed a sample of the Alaïs meteorite and found that it contained water,
00:41clay minerals, and complex carbon compounds. And that's what happened on this day in space.
