00:00In the 1940s, as we have seen, Hollywood offered very few roles for Black actors.
00:05and even less so for black women.
00:07But there's a movie that came out called Stormy Weather, and at the heart of that movie,
00:11There is a black actress who is stunning, who is exceptional, and that is Selena Rogers.
00:16I'm introducing this character to you for my week on International Women's Day.
00:21The film tells the story of a dancer who dreams of succeeding in the world of entertainment.
00:25But one of the most striking figures in the film is Selena Rogers, a talented singer played by Lena Horne.
00:32At that time, Hollywood often imposed very limited and very stereotypical roles on black actors.
00:37Lena Horne refuses her roles and demands dignified and complex characters.
00:42She then became one of the first Black women to sign a major contract with a large Hollywood studio, Metro
00:48-Goldwyn-Mayer.
00:49But even with this contract, studios cut some of these scenes because they don't fit into the budget.
00:56'other states because of racial segregation.
00:58The film is also famous for a scene that has become legendary, the performance of the Nicholas Brothers, considered by many historians to be the most iconic.
01:05of cinema as one of the greatest dance scenes ever filmed.
01:09With Stormy Weather, Lena Horne became a pioneer for black actresses in Hollywood.
