00:00Nearly all of Austria's glaciers have retreated over the past two years, as monitors warn
00:05that a dramatic development is unfolding across the Alps.
00:09The latest report from the Austrian Alpine Club reveals that only two of the country's
00:1496 glaciers have remained stable, while some have lost more than 100 meters in length.
00:21The Pasterze, Austria's largest glacier, is showing visible signs of disintegration following
00:26a long-term trend of significant shrinkage in area and volume.
00:30Since 2015, neighboring Switzerland has seen its glaciers shrink by a quarter,
00:36with more than 1,000 small glaciers already vanishing entirely.
00:41Record-breaking heat, including a June that was 5 degrees above average, combined with low snowfall,
00:46has accelerated the melt which experts say will have vast implications for drinking water and power generation.
00:54The Alpine Club is calling the report a wake-up call for policy makers,
00:58arguing that the focus must now shift to mitigating the consequences of a landscape
01:02that is being permanently altered.
