00:34there is still a great great deal of poverty in this country uh which can only be relaxed or overcome
00:43through uh petty theft through some kind of petty crime um raymond and manny are not bad men
00:52in fact they are quite tender-hearted men good men capable of great love and honor and loyalty
00:59but they have to survive and this has created uh this very strange way of making a living
01:06which of course backfires as it does most of the time
01:13um yeah i i certainly have to agree with kate and uh to add to that i think it
01:20it tells a story of survival um and doing our best and i think it paints a picture of uh
01:30just that it's more complicated than than you would than i think people think when when they look at a
01:40city like philly and they see what people are going through there is a tendency as humans for
01:46us to have a very binary view of it and i think what the show does successfully is paint a
01:54very
01:55complex tapestry of human nature and our need for survival and um our goodness our innate goodness
02:05uh yeah and let's face it we're all attracted to and by an easy buck this is the human nature
02:14right if i can make a buck without having to work terribly hard to get it that would probably be
02:19my preference certainly for a guy like raymond it would be i think he's out painting houses he's not
02:25painting houses he's never painted the house but he wears those battered things but he's come up
02:30across this idea that they will be low-level dea scam artists and it works like a charm until of
02:39course
02:40it doesn't and this is the moral of the story what impressed you about peter craig's uh writing
02:47what didn't what doesn't we love his writing it's it's it's amazing it's he's truly the best writer
02:57i've ever had a chance to work with and um it just feel it's just a joy to to say
03:04his dialogue and to
03:06read his his words and um yeah just an absolute delight he's a rare man he's a rare creature to
03:14to
03:14find in hollywood um uh on the page i think he's unsurpassed certainly regarding television i've not
03:24read anything that can compare to this kind of excellence and off the page he is kind and
03:30thoughtful and dear and funny and authentic and very honest i think that his thrust in life is to
03:38be the best possible person that he can be and it is um clear in his gift very clear
03:47the core of the series are friendship and sacrifice do you agree with that
03:52quote friendship and what sacrifice and sacrifice yeah yeah yeah friendship and sacrifice do you agree
03:59with that that's good yeah i would agree um i think there there's kind of like a like a tier
04:09i guess
04:10but friendship sacrifice survival um addiction is certainly a part of it but um yeah i i to me i
04:20really think the core is is showing the polarity of humanity i mean you literally start the series on
04:27on manny and ray who are kind of doing this like very complicated and terrible deed
04:37going into this house and pretending to be dea agents and throughout the entire sequence you have
04:45ray kind of talking about you know it's my birthday right it's just like this very funny balance of um
04:51of just always showing heart and by the time he gets to teresa and she's pretending like she doesn't
04:57know it's his birthday and um yeah i just love that there's always these two things going on at once
05:03it's very human i think what's key to a successful series particularly a limited series like this
05:11is tension i value tension more than any other single dynamic uh in a movie or a series because
05:20it's what draws you it's what draws you in so immediately you see what uh he he shows his
05:27he's virtuosic in choosing that they would be dea scam artists right away we're set up for tension
05:34okay maybe they're creamy off the top a grand here a couple of grand and it looks petty it looks
05:41small
05:41but it very quickly morphs into something over everybody's heads but he is establishing that
05:48immediately and with some sense with some humor as well which is tough to do
