00:00It's the 5th of March 1944, and in a cramped U-boat, Captain Gerhard Seehausen is hunting his prey.
00:17The cargo ship erupts in a ball of flame. It's a hit.
00:21This is the fourth ship they've sunk on this sortie.
00:24The submarine is the U-66, one of the most successful U-boats of the war.
00:31It has taken part in four wolf packs claiming 36 victims and sending over 200,000 tons worth of ships
00:37and cargo to the bottom of the sea.
00:40The Germans, buoyed by their success, plan their next hunting ground.
00:44I think we should be here.
00:50Hundreds of miles away, on the U.S. destroyer escort, the USS Buckley, Lieutenant Commander Brent Abel receives a transmission.
00:57Sir, orders from Block Island. U-boat attack reported at 03.56 north, 07.36 east.
01:03Task group is ordered to sweep the area.
01:05Reply, we copy.
01:06Engines full steam ahead. Maintain heading 150.
01:10Abel and his ship forms part of a U-boat hunting party and they've been given a target.
01:19After months at sea, the German supplies are getting low and they surface at an agreed rendezvous point west of
01:26Africa.
01:27Captain Seehausen waits impatiently at the conning tower.
01:35U-66 now finds itself alone, low on fuel and torpedoes and on the run from the skies and the
01:41seas which are swarming with American patrols.
01:44They sail in circles waiting for an arranged resupply, but it's nowhere to be seen.
01:48As the lookout fruitlessly scans the horizon one more time, something unexpected reaches his ears.
01:54Looking up, he spots the last thing they want to see.
01:58Achtung, Javus! Menner auf Gefechtstation! Fertig machen zum Eingrill!
02:03Up in the distance, inside an American TBM-1C bomber, Lieutenant Jimmy J. Salas scans the waters.
02:15A dark outline sits in the waves. It's completely unrecognizable.
02:19Oh, Salas knows region. That's no island.
02:23That's a submarine.
02:27Don't shoot! Maybe he hasn't seen us.
02:34He's seen us! Stop!
02:40There's no attack. Wait!
02:42You see, we're준.
02:43Arm, hold on!
02:55You're right!
02:56Come on!
02:57Come on, you're right, scientist?
03:17Sehausen is torn.
03:18Caution would indicate them to submerge and escape.
03:21But they don't have many days of diesel left, and their diving equipment needs spare parts.
03:26If they miss this resupply, there's no guarantee they can make it home.
03:30Stay on the surface and stay on the surface of the cargo ship.
03:34That's critical.
03:36In the sky, Sellers flies away, broadcasting every detail of the submarine.
03:41The message is received on the USS Buckley just 20 miles away.
03:45They found it. Scout describes it sailing in circles, perhaps waiting for that other subar boy sank the other day.
03:51Commander Brent Abel grins at the news.
03:53Prepare for battle. Engines to flank speed. Heading 350. Let's make all haze.
04:00Just 40 minutes later, the USS Buckley approaches its target, guided along by Sellers in the sky.
04:06Anything on the radar?
04:08Negative, sir.
04:11They should be here somewhere.
04:15Detection bearing, 335. 14,000 yards.
04:19Abel scours the waves, but sees nothing but darkness.
04:22If he can't find it, how will his gunners hit the damn thing?
04:25He lowers his binoculars and looks west.
04:28The moon is big and low over the horizon, casting a long and beautiful reflection across the waves.
04:34He gets an idea.
04:35Heading 340. Let's put that sub to our west.
04:40On the German U-boat, lookouts finally notice the ship in the distance.
04:44The ship is southward.
04:46Which kind?
04:47Unbekannt.
04:48It's dark.
04:50Do we greet them?
04:51Negative.
04:52We are not able to fight if the Americans are full of alarm and alarm.
04:57It's just a passive solar.
05:00Two vessels continue to get closer.
05:03Abel watches the sea throughout, finally managing to barely spot the shape of the submarine in the waves, but still,
05:09he holds fire.
05:11Meanwhile, aboard the U-66, they watch the unknown ship getting ever closer.
05:15They have to have seen us already.
05:19Abfeuern von Aufklärungsraken.
05:30No answer, sir.
05:31Chills travel down the spine of everyone gathered.
05:33It's clear now.
05:34They're not friendly.
05:37Kurshof 010.
05:38Heck torpedoes ready?
05:40Yes, sir.
05:41Can we get down?
05:42With our cleanly vents, it will take 15 minutes.
05:45Then forget it.
05:47Let the men with the weapons...
05:48It's a disaster, but they're determined to fight.
05:50Alarms blare within the U-boat.
05:52Deep within the vessel, 21-inch torpedoes are locked and loaded.
06:01Back at USS Buckley,
06:02Commander Abel finally sees his elusive prey enter the moon's reflection.
06:07The invisible ghost is now clear as day.
06:09Heading 260.
06:10Get the range.
06:11Yes, sir.
06:12The Houndsman turns hard to port, aiming the destroyer straight towards the enemy.
06:17But little does anyone on the bridge know that outside, a torpedo sails right by where the ship would have
06:23been if it hadn't changed course.
06:25Torpedo verfehlt!
06:27Feuer aus allen roren!
06:28Muzzle flashes shine from the enemy submarine.
06:31Tracers fly towards the American ship.
06:33Without skipping a beat, Commander Abel gives the order.
06:36Open fire!
06:36To unleash their own guns.
06:3920mm, 40mm, and 3-inch guns open fire simultaneously, launching a storm of lead at the Germans.
06:46The moon, and preparation on their side, their accuracy is on point.
06:50The rounds slam straight onto U-66's deck.
06:54Zehausen's post is rocked by heavy fire.
06:57But the armor holds.
06:58We've been hit!
07:00Give me a death report and shoot!
07:04In the air, Salah's radios updates of the battle to the battle group.
07:08Buckley has opened fire!
07:09Sub is returning fire!
07:11Boy, I have never before seen such concentration!
07:13Buckley is cutting hell out of the conning tower!
07:18The German gunners brave the incoming shells, holding position and fighting back with all they have.
07:23But in the dark and the chaos, they aim far too high, their courage reaping no rewards.
07:29One by one, they fall, and the guns lay quiet.
07:36Looking on with his binoculars, Commander Abel sees the submarine about to leave the moon's reflection.
07:42Check fire! Check fire!
07:43Don't waste ammunition while we can't see!
07:45Heading 180!
07:50The shelling pauses at a good time for U-66.
07:54Injured men retreat into the hatches and are replaced by fresh crew.
07:58This is their chance.
08:00Fire!
08:03AA guns open up on the destroyer escort and shells streak across the sky.
08:08The U-Boat gunners try to adjust low, but estimating the range of a dark object on a dark background
08:13proves next to impossible.
08:15The American storm of fire resumes in full force.
08:19The whole broadside of the destroyer unleashing its many guns upon the submarine.
08:23The U-Boat gun crews bravely continue to fire despite completely lacking protection, loading and firing as bullets crash all
08:31around them.
08:31The chaos becomes background noise as they work.
08:35One of their rounds punches through the Buckley smokestack.
08:38But Buckley's weapons pummel the enemy into submission, the foc'sle getting shredded.
08:42All throughout, Sehausen desperately calls evasive maneuvers.
08:47The sub constantly turns left and right, trying to dodge the brutal enemy fire.
08:53But in the process, they only slip further into Buckley's grasp.
08:57In U-66's conning tower, Captain Sehausen orders to turn around to face the enemy.
09:07The torpedo launches out the tube, carrying with it the German crew's last hope.
09:13Commander Abel watches the submarine maneuver, unsure of his enemy's plan.
09:18He shadows his every turn as his men continue to fire with exceptional markmanship, scoring hit after hit.
09:24Then his sonar officer calls.
09:26Torpedo, starboard bow!
09:28Runner, fall, starboard!
09:31USS Buckley turns hard to the right, the crew on deck watching the ominous trail of bubbles coming closer.
09:49At warship speeds, the maneuver feels eternal, but they manage to escape, the torpedo sailing harmlessly by.
09:57Torpedo failed.
10:00It's devastating news.
10:01Their last chance is gone.
10:03Defenceless, Sehausen sees no option but to make the dreaded order.
10:08Runter from the ship!
10:09Yes, sir!
10:10Kurs 030!
10:11Feindlichen Feuer ausweichen, so lange es geht!
10:15A couple of German sailors rush out of the hatches and dive into the sea, escaping the barrage of shells.
10:20But in the dark, Abel doesn't notice and they continue mercilessly shelling the submarine.
10:24The USS Buckley maneuvers to sail alongside the enemy as their gun is bracketed with endless gunfire.
10:30The sub's guns have long gone quiet, but it still sails.
10:34And as far as Abel knows, it's still trying to fight the torpedoes.
10:38But he's to have none of it.
10:40Ram it!
10:41The Houndsman yanks on the wheel, turning the American destroyer right towards the U-boat.
10:46On board the U-boat, the escaping crew is shocked to see 1,400 tons of ship barreling towards them.
10:55But it's too late.
11:01The destroyer slams into the submarine and leaning against it.
11:06Soon after, Germans emerge out of the hatches, originally intending to abandon ship as ordered.
11:11They're shocked to find Buckley on their submarine.
11:16Without orders or plan, over a dozen Germans take out their personal weapons and decide to fire upon the Buckley's
11:24crew.
11:25Abel immediately realizes the risk they've put themselves into and issues an order not heard in over a century.
11:30Standby to repel boarders!
11:33Moments later, Germans start making the jump onto Buckley's deck.
11:38The Americans immediately respond with their own side arms, opening fire on the mass of climbing Germans.
11:44Over a dozen Germans make it over the railing and a fistfight breaks out on deck.
11:55Everything from spent casings to the officers' hot coffee become weapons, striking enemy sailors in the head and causing them
12:02to fall back.
12:03It's chaos.
12:05Aware of the defolving situation, Commander Abel does the only thing he can.
12:09Edges! Full reverse!
12:10USS Buckley starts sliding backwards across the submarine's hull, making an infernal noise.
12:16Germans cling onto the side of Buckley and are forced to choose between dropping back onto the U-66
12:21or being abandoned aboard the enemy's ship.
12:24An unknown sailor brings grenades and throws them at the sub.
12:35Thank God!
12:41Moments later, a huge explosion rises from the sea and everything falls silent.
12:48USS Buckley circled the area for hours and picked up 36 survivors from the U-Boat's 62-man crew,
12:54most of them having come out during the fight.
12:57USS Buckley itself didn't lose a single man and Commander Abel would be awarded the Navy Cross for his leadership.
13:03He survived the war.
13:05Captain Gerhard Sehausen was never found and went down with his ship.
13:09He was just 26 years old.
13:13managerial crash of the ship.
13:13And if I get a singleport of the ship from the ship, he was just 26 years old.
13:14He was just 15 years old in his ship.
13:14I didn't know the ship was just on the ship.
13:14And he was the three ships up in the ship, but the ship was shut down with the ship.
13:14I was just 15 years old with the ship.
