00:02What's going on?
00:04Someone's trying to kill us.
00:05We are trying to kill them.
00:07You don't know what side they're fighting for.
00:09I'm Alex Garland, the writer-director of Civil War.
00:14It's a war film in the apocalypse now mode.
00:16A graph of ramping adrenaline and intensity
00:20leading to an invasion of Washington, D.C.
00:23The journalists are embedded with...
00:26They're risking their lives to show the world what happened.
00:28When you're a war photojournalist, that's your job.
00:32Whatever that takes, she's willing to risk her life.
00:35It's serious and it's dangerous,
00:37but in some ways it's a road trip movie.
00:39Whilst it's tracking the cross-country through war
00:43as they make their way towards D.C.,
00:45it's also tracking the relationship.
00:48I'm worried about that girl, and I'm worried about you too.
00:52The whole group is at risk
00:53because you don't know what you're going to face.
00:56There's no GPS, everything's down,
00:58no one can use cell phones.
01:00They're taking the back roads
01:02to stay off major highways.
01:04The United States are vaporizing.
01:09Every day we're getting this very hardcore scenario.
01:15The way that Alex shot it was really intelligent
01:18because he didn't do it in a traditional style.
01:21The cameras were almost invisible to us.
01:23It felt immersive and it felt incredibly real
01:26and it was, it was chilling.
01:29When I read the script,
01:30this is no ordinary thing.
01:33Coming from the guy who directed
01:34The Ex-Mark and Annihilation,
01:36I really think that Alex is brilliant.
01:39He doesn't want to do it.
01:41That's how I felt reading the script.
01:42It was like nothing I'd ever read before.
01:45I was trying to make people participate
01:47in the movie imaginatively
01:48rather than sit back and have it happen to them.
01:51It shook me when I first saw it to my core.
01:54But also I thought it was very moving.
01:58It's a hell of a story.
02:00It's a hell of an experience.
02:02Oh, sir!
02:03Get over here now!
02:04Get over here now!
