00:01Laias!
00:04Give me a mic!
00:12Thank you.
00:15How do you do, ladies and gentlemen?
00:17This is Orson Welles.
00:19I'm speaking for the Mercury Theatre,
00:21and what follows is supposed to advertise our first motion picture.
00:26Citizen Kane is the title,
00:27and we hope it can correctly be called a coming attraction.
00:31It's certainly coming, coming to this theatre,
00:33and I think our Mercury actors make it an attraction.
00:36I'd like you to meet them.
00:37Speaking of attractions,
00:39well, the chorus girls are certainly an attraction,
00:41but frankly, ladies and gentlemen,
00:43we're just showing you the chorus girls for purposes of ballyhoo.
00:47It's a pretty nice ballyhoo.
00:49But here's some of our real Mercury people.
00:51This is the first time you've seen most of them on the screen.
00:54Hey, give Joe a little light.
00:56Thanks.
00:57Now, smile for the folks, Joe.
01:00Smile!
01:01Joseph Cotton, ladies and gentlemen.
01:03That's it.
01:04Joseph Cotton.
01:05I think you're going to see a lot of him.
01:06Here's Ruth Warwick, whom I know you love.
01:09Ruth.
01:10Look at the camera, Ruth.
01:11We caught Ruth with her hair up.
01:13And here's somebody you've all heard on the radio,
01:15so I don't have to tell you he's wonderful.
01:17Ray Collins.
01:18Dorothy Commingore is a name I'm going to repeat.
01:20Dorothy Commingore.
01:21I won't have to repeat it much longer.
01:23You'll be repeating it.
01:24And here's George Koulouris, who's a grand actor.
01:27I'll say that name again.
01:28George Koulouris.
01:30Watch it.
01:30Here comes Everett Sloan.
01:31Look out, Everett.
01:32Oops.
01:34Everett Sloan, ladies and gentlemen.
01:36He isn't necessarily a comedian.
01:37And here's one of the best actors in the world.
01:40Agnes Moorhead.
01:42I've said a lot of nice things, but Erskine Sanford deserves some more.
01:44Erskine.
01:45Erskine Sanford.
01:46So does Paul.
01:47Paul.
01:48Paul Stewart, everybody.
01:50Citizen Kane is a modern American story about a man called Kane.
01:54Charles Foster Kane.
01:55I don't know how to tell you about him.
01:57There's so many things to say.
01:59I'll turn you over instead to the characters in the picture.
02:01As you'll see, they feel very strongly on the subject.
02:05Charles Foster Kane is a...
02:08Sure, he started the war.
02:11But do you think if it hadn't been for Mr. Kane,
02:13the United States would have the Panama Canal?
02:16Charles Foster Kane is nothing more or less than a communist.
02:20Kane, governor.
02:22Listen, when the voters of this state and Mrs. Kane
02:24learn what I found out about Mr. Kane
02:26and a certain little blondie named Susan Alexander,
02:28he couldn't be elected dog catcher.
02:29I'm going to skin Mr. Charles Foster Kane alive.
02:32I'm going to marry him next week at the White House.
02:35Emily, I hear you've been stepping out with Charlie Kane.
02:39Of course I love him.
02:41I gave him $60 million.
02:43Well, of course I love him.
02:45He's the richest man in America.
02:48But all the girls say about him at first.
02:50But you know, I can't help but admire him.
02:53He's crazy.
02:54He's wonderful.
02:58Ladies and gentlemen,
03:00I don't know what you'll think about Mr. Kane.
03:02I can't imagine.
03:03You see, I play the part myself.
03:05Well, Kane is a hero and a scoundrel,
03:09a Noah Count and a swell guy,
03:11a great lover,
03:13a great American citizen,
03:14and a dirty dog.
03:16It depends on who's talking about him.
03:18What's the real truth about Charles Foster Kane?
03:21I wish you'd come to this theater
03:23when Citizen Kane plays here
03:24and decide for yourself.
