00:07Sean the director was really open to any of my ideas
00:12I told him I wanted to wear a braided belt
00:15and acid wash jeans and paisley shirts
00:19I grew up with this guy, I grew up in Oklahoma
00:21and I know who this guy is
00:26he drives fast cars and he looks
00:29he thinks he looks tough, but he looks gay
00:40the characters and the structure of the movie
00:44it just felt like the two nerds
00:48one thinks he's a womanizer
00:51and one is this true nerd
00:53but that you root for him
00:54because he's in every guy
00:57and everybody feels like a nerd
01:00when they're growing up in high school
01:08there's obviously really sort of silly slapstick stuff
01:11that happens, but at the heart of it all
01:15there's very nice, poignant, tender moments
01:19and that's what's cool about this
01:22is that Sean really, you know
01:25he knows that if we go in and just play the joke
01:27then it's not funny
01:28but you have to play it real
01:30and then let the joke be the joke
01:39I actually thought the script was one of the funniest scripts I've ever read
01:43I thought it was hilarious
01:44and when you read it in script
01:46your concern is
01:47whether or not it's going to be well executed
01:50and that was
01:51it's always something that you
01:53you think
01:54I thought it was funny
01:56because the movie I saw in my head
01:57when I was reading it was funny
01:58but who's this director?
02:00who's the other actors?
02:02are they going to do the dumb version of it?
02:03or are they going to do the really smart version of it?
02:05and you always hope that they do the intelligent, clever, smart version of what's funny
02:10and, you know, my first couple days on the set
02:14it was obviously very clear that Sean and John were just, you know
02:20because they wrote the script, you know
02:21you would think that they get what's funny
02:30with this, it's like something
02:31like I've never done anything like this before, you know
02:33and I grew up watching these types of movies
02:35and, you know, I liken this to 16 Candles and Porky's
02:39and, you know, Better Off Dead, Weird Science
02:44you know, those sort of 80's coming of age movies
02:46that were like, informed my, you know
02:50my adolescence
02:52unfortunately
02:53Fast Times at Ridgemont High
02:54you know, and so this is my opportunity to be in one of those
03:04it's so easy in this movie to go too far with the jokes, you know
03:07like, oh, it would be funny to say this, it would be funny to do that, you know
03:11and, like I said before, like it was all on the page with this script
03:15it was all very funny
03:16and it doesn't require any sort of sensationalizing
03:18or, you know, or taking it to the next level
03:21it's really just being confident in that it's funny by itself
03:26and letting it be funny and not, like, doing jokes on jokes, you know
03:29but, a lot of people start off
03:30you know, a lot of people start going down
03:30and you're just going down
03:31and then following theicer
03:31Lobo
03:31that makes you think
