00:09165 Aston, take 3. A camera.
00:11Ok, here we go.
00:12We're here at Pomer Studios, the underwater stage.
00:15It's 1.2 million litres.
00:17Globally unique. There's nowhere else in any studio
00:20with a permanently filled underwater stage.
00:23It's 20 metres long by 10 metres by 6 metres deep.
00:273, 2, 1, and action.
00:31It's quite a huge sequence with so many moving parts
00:34and so many elements.
00:36And this is just one beat of the action.
00:39That being said, Daniel's pretty game for anything.
00:42He was underwater a lot yesterday.
00:44Not only has he got to concentrate on the fight,
00:46he's got to concentrate on the acting as well.
00:48It is tiring because you're moving a lot more than you think you are.
00:51You know, just lifting your arm is more weight on it
00:52because you're underwater and all that.
00:53So, you know, he probably had a really good night's sleep.
00:56And cut, always cut.
00:57When shooting underwater, make it look exciting, dangerous and real
01:01and the audience, hopefully, will buy it.
01:08My responsibility as the director of photography,
01:12the underwater DP, is to light and shoot the scene.
01:16Well, I can't do that by myself.
01:18So, first of all, I send a picture to the surface
01:21so the director and everybody up here,
01:24makeup, wardrobe, hair, everyone,
01:25can see what we're actually doing.
01:28Once we put the actors underwater,
01:29they need to ideally hear from the surface
01:33what they're supposed to do.
01:35Why can you get underneath Daniel's knee looking up this time?
01:38So, Francoise talks to the actors underwater
01:41on behalf of the director
01:42through very high-quality underwater loudspeakers.
01:46Hey, nice guys.
01:47Let's reset for one more, please.
01:48Once we've shot something,
01:50I've got an underwater monitor
01:51and I can show the actor underwater afterwards the scene.
01:54The director can modify their performance as well.
01:58That was great, Daniel.
01:59Could you look up a little bit more to the left next time?
02:02So that saves everyone coming up, going back down,
02:04coming up, going back down.
02:05And that's the secret of working here.
02:08Preparation and planning.
02:21We train and we rehearse
02:23and we cover all the bases
02:25so we always train with masks on
02:27and we build up everyone's confidence
02:28and then we take the masks off.
02:30It's the same environment
02:31but you just can't see anything
02:32so you know that the diver's on the left
02:34or the diver's on the right
02:35but you just can't physically see them
02:36so you just have to rely on them
02:38but you've done that training time and time again.
02:40Also, what you've got to remember,
02:41we've got like a 20-foot drop
02:43so when they're dropping,
02:44you've got to equalize your ears
02:45so they've got to try and do that
02:46without sort of doing a fight scene
02:47and they're fighting
02:48and instead of doing that
02:48every three seconds through the fight
02:50because it'll obviously look bad
02:51so I was getting them used to being able to do that
02:53so they don't have to use their hands.
02:55Is everyone okay? Thank you.
02:56You need to raise the ante as the movie is going
02:59and this movie really takes that to the next level, I think.
03:02I think they've done an amazing job.
03:03We actually work for the audience
03:05and that's the most important thing.
03:06If the audience believe in what we're doing,
03:09that's our success.
03:10Everyone to the surface, please. Thank you.
