00:08What is my favourite part of playing Wolverine?
00:09That's a tough thing. What is my favourite part of playing Wolverine?
00:17He is, to me, the most badass comic book character out there.
00:23Way cooler than me, way tougher than me.
00:26So I kind of get to have great wish fulfilment playing it.
00:30In fact, I should tell you, my son, who's about to turn 13, just recently said to me,
00:35I used to think you were really like Wolverine, but you're actually not that.
00:39It's kind of really fun playing the toughest guy in the yard.
00:48How much training goes into Wolverine?
00:49The simple answer is a lot.
00:51I basically work out for three hours a day, two hours in the morning,
00:55and then wherever I can during the day, I fit in another hour.
00:59But I'll be honest with you, the most important thing about the training is the eating.
01:06In fact, 70% of how you look is how you eat.
01:08Only 30% is the training, so that's probably the more vital thing.
01:17Great question.
01:18Japan factors in, in a massive way.
01:21I don't know if you're a fan of the comic book saga, the samurai saga, but I know a lot
01:27of fans are.
01:28I was a big fan of it.
01:29But the movie is set in Japan.
01:32We shot in Japan.
01:34It, it really feels different.
01:36The look of it is different.
01:37The atmosphere is very different from any other X-Men movie.
01:41And through Wolverine, you enter this world.
01:44He's very much a fish out of water, and I think the audience will feel that too.
01:47It's a very enigmatic, mysterious, and fascinating world.
01:56I think what I love about this Wolverine movie, and why it's called The Wolverine and not Wolverine 2,
02:04is it's a completely different, not only tone, but I think you get the definitive look at the character.
02:12And for many of the movies, we concentrate on his lack of memory.
02:17And he's, in this movie, we really concentrate on his immortality, and the implications of that,
02:23and what the future means for someone like Wolverine.
02:28I think the fans will really find it refreshing and different, and very cool.
02:37Would I like to live as long as Wolverine?
02:39Yeah, absolutely. I don't know many people who wouldn't.
02:43Mind you, if I was Wolverine, I'd probably have second thoughts.
02:47He's someone with a lot of regret and pain, and life is not easy for him.
02:52And actually, one of the great things about this movie is you see the implications of almost being immortal.
03:01And is it a good thing to live a long life if you're living with a lot of pain and
03:07regret?
03:07Or is it a burden?
03:09That's really where we find Wolverine at the beginning of the movie.
03:12And I don't want to give away much more than that.
03:19I think the thing I loved about this Wolverine is it was a really brand new cast.
03:25Obviously, the movie takes place in Japan, and we have some incredible Japanese actors.
03:32I'll never forget. We were shooting a scene, and we had 200 extras, and at the end of the day,
03:38Hiro, who's in the movie, has done about 80 Japanese movies.
03:44People were not impressed to see me. They were literally falling over themselves to see Hiro, the fact they were
03:50in a movie with him.
03:51We have some of the greatest Japanese actors. We also have brand new actors.
03:56And I think for audiences, it's going to be exciting.
04:00There are new mutants. I don't want to give too much away.
04:05But in every way, this movie's going to feel fresh.
04:08For me, as an actor, it felt completely fresh and exciting.
04:16For me, the thing I'm most excited about for you guys to see is some of the action.
04:23We really decided on this movie because we had this incredible new canvas of Japan.
04:31We had samurais. We had a whole new palette to work with that we could give and make action that
04:38was fresh and exciting that hadn't been seen before.
04:40And I'm just going to say two words. Bullet Train.
04:51Is it tough to turn off Wolverine?
04:53I use it occasionally.
04:56You know, you want to get reservations, restaurants.
05:00You want to get a seat on the subway. There's places where it comes in handy.
05:03But actually, mate, it's been 12 years I've been playing him and I can turn it on and I can
05:09turn it off pretty quickly. Thankfully.
05:11I don't know if I'd be very welcome at home if I was just scowling and calling everyone bub.
05:22The movie is called The Wolverine and is there pressure? I suppose there is pressure. I feel pressure on every
05:29movie but the right kind of pressure.
05:33I suppose in a sports analogy, at the end of the game, do people want the ball to shoot the
05:39hoop? Yeah, they do.
05:40And so in that way, it's good.
05:41But it is always a team effort.
05:46And in this movie, there are so many other great characters and great actors and Jim Mangold, who's a fantastic
05:52director, just made that pressure feel completely manageable.
05:58And the movie is called The Wolverine and what I love about it, I think more than ever before, you
06:03get a definitive look at this character and what makes him who he is.
06:21James Mangold is a great friend of mine. We did a movie together called Kate and Leopold, which probably couldn't
06:26be more opposite from this.
06:28But he is an incredible director. He has great vision. He has big ambition and he's done a lot of
06:36great movies.
06:37So, when someone like James Mangold signs on to The Wolverine, you know you're not just going to get, oh,
06:44it's another Wolverine.
06:45You know you're going to get something definitive. You know you're going to get something fresh.
06:49And you're going to get something that's really worth your time.
06:52For me, I loved it every day. It was the most fun I've had.
06:57And I hope you enjoy the result as much as I enjoy making it.
07:08Looking for some scoops on Days of Future Past.
07:11Alright.
07:14The mutton chop's still there.
07:18I don't think I'm giving you any real scoops if I tell you that pretty much all the old X
07:24-Men are back.
07:26And when I say the old X-Men, I mean from the X-Men movies and from X-Men First
07:32Class.
07:33It is probably one of the most exciting ensembles ever kind of put together, really, for a film.
07:39I mean, the list on any day's call sheet is pretty impressive.
07:43But I think the really exciting thing beyond that is the new characters that are coming and the actors that
07:49are doing that.
07:49So, I really, Simon Pete told him nothing except how much fun it is and how mind-blowing it is
08:00to be working with all those actors.
08:01And to be back with Brian in 12 years since we all began.
08:06Our conversations are very different from what bar should we go to to how are the kids doing.
08:11So, it's all very different.
08:19And you need to figure out how the kids are doing.
